A recent post on the listening thread reminded me I never got around to getting this set. So I remedied that.

Will be interested to hear what you think of the works, performances and the recordings.

Hat tip to San Antone for mentioning this cycle, which I did not know was complete.  I had not checked on it since the depths of Covid.  Qobuz has the three volumes for a fully acceptable price - $20 a pop.

Cycle #125 overall, #6 from an Italian pianist, #3 from a Z pianist, and #2 from a Maurizio.  (The Maurizio hat trick looks to be completed this year or next.)

I will subject the cycle to the most rigorous scientific listening regime known to man and assign it a proper rating.

Zaccaria competed in the 2009 Van Cliburn competition and did not place, but the competition included no less than Alessandro Deljavan, Haochen Zhang, Evgeni Bozhanov, Lukáš Vondráček, Mariangela Vacatello, and YES, so competition was fierce.  That implies some good stuff should be contained in the set.

In my experience, Herreweghe is consistently excellent, and this recording of Threni and the Requiem Canticles is (as Rafael has noted) is superb! I enjoyed both of the Lyatoshynksky symphonies a lot. I've never been disappointed with Kuchar and the Ukrainian State Symphony. The third disc I've not yet gotten around to; will report.

Quote from: AnotherSpin on September 01, 2023, 12:48:56 AMThe beauty of it is that everyone hears their own Wagner. Mine is filled with glorious idealism and I don't hear anything negative, rather the opposite. I don't see anything wrong in the fact that the material world is doomed. There is no slightest doubt, everything that has arisen will inevitably disappear. By the way reading Schopenhauer has always been liberating, leaving me at peace.

My thoughts exactly  :)

Perhaps great minds think alike!
I just ordered the Dvorak and Vivaldi from Presto, along with the newest installment of Haydn 2032, and this:

BTW
I saw a report on Twitter about the Savall Mendelssohn: there may be a screw-up regarding the sonics and what's on the CD. You may need to keep the Return To Seller label handy.

Have you been following this series? Trying it out is on my to-do list.
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

Yes, I have. A splendid series so far. Medtner's lieder constitute a big part of his life's work (the piano parts are particularly superb) and he always took his choice of poetry very seriously. This issue includes Opp. 6, 12, 15 & 18 (settings of Goethe and Heine).

I like that there's a clarinet concerto! I haven't heard it, but I've found most of what I have heard of Rautavaara to be quite interesting. (And I especially like the 1st movement of Cantus Arcticus. I need to listen to the whole thing!)

Yes, you should listen to the whole thing.  ;)  :)  It's quite lovely and do I dare say calming(?).  I love how he incorporated bird sounds into it (from his native homeland).  The recording that I purchased some years ago was the one with Pommer.

Do you play the clarinet Mapman?
