If anyone could recommend the best Krenek?...

Quote from: jlaurson on May 13, 2013, 08:17:48 AM
for starters:

Symphony No. 4; Concerto Grosso (cpo)

I'm not starting with Krenek (he's been in my collection many years) but was missing the Fourth. Rectified that today:

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Noooooooo the Prazak Beethoven box is out of stock and MDT can't guarantee they'll be able to find it.

Clearly someone on another board went and handed out the information, too.  We must find them... >:D

Great Apollo!   They've....changed....the cover art....and not in a good way.

Fortunately, the performances are first rate.  Do you have Biondi's other Boccherini recordings?

Oddly enough both versions are still available, but this one is cheaper on the marketplace for some reason.

And no, I don't have his other Boccherini recordings.  This is my second Boccherini recording, the first being half of the Op. 11 Quintets played by the Smithsonian Chamber Players.  Unfortunately, the latter recording has so much reverb that it literally hurts my ears (I have sinus problems which results in sensitive ears) so I decided to grab the Biondi recording to tide me over until I could afford to start investing in the Brilliant Classics sets.  That said, I'm familiar with some of Biondi's other work so I am really looking forward to this one.

If you mean the Magnifica Comunita recordings,  I'd suggest getting the other Biondi recordings and letting Brilliant wait without regret. Their chief appeal is to completeness addicts like myself.   Magnifica covers a lot more works, but doesn't perform at Biondi's level--and Biondi has at least one thing (a sextet) that's not in their series.  Magnifica is a large group of works played well;  Biondi is a small group of works played extremely well.

Jordi Savall did one CD of some of the famous quintets, and of course that's a good one to get.

There's also a series on Naxos (three CDs, IIRC) of the complete cello concertos,  very nicely done although I'm fairly certain it's not PI.

Yes, and it's a 'must-have', with the nicest 'Fandango' and 'La Musica Notturna Delle Strade Di Madrid' of anyone!

I saw a chance to grab this shipped used, 'like new' for $14 and decided I better grab it before someone else does.

Modest binge at Arkivmusic.
It's nice to see that Wolf Ferrari is starting to get noticed by labels other than CPO.  Luisi doing Mahler is totally speculative.

For me these bear looking into ... or should that be hearing into?

Hmmm ... judging from the short samples I found, Hewitt's approach is more classically pristine than romantically indulgent, and the orchestra sounds good but the recording is pianocentric. Now turning to Abbado via Mog. ;)

Superb. I only like Keller/ECM better (and not by much), in that arrangement.
Don't, however, make the mistake of judging by the quality of this the presumed quality of their "Bach Fugues" album... you might (should/will) be disappointed.

Since I've got your attention(s), what would you rec. for an Art on keyboard?

These days I'm partial to Joanna MacGregor on piano -- contemplative and fluid.

Haven't listened to Labadie since acquiring Fretwork and Phantasm, and still prefer the Emersons to all.  (Too many voices!)

Here's my keyboard trinity:

Davitt Moroney (Clavecin, Harmonia Mundi), Andre Isoir (Organ, Calliope), Grigory Sokolov (Piano, Naive).

Not Pierre-Laurent Aimard, sadly... which is less than it should have been...

Honorable mention Walcha (organ, Archiv)...
and of course there's plenty to be said for (or against) Glenn Gould. (mix & match, CBS/Sony)
