Damn, the two that were guessed are the only two that I know! I don't like "Gruppen", but that is a very cool section from that piece, I admit. Simon Rattle, in his "Leaving Home" video series, described it as "the audience getting caught in the middle of three searchlights."

Sibelius' recently-uncovered dabbling in musique concrete? Either that, or it's me when I went snowshoeing in Maine last February.

Is this from "Licht"?
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Here is what I posted. 1 and 3 have been correctly guessed.
1. [audio]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/uyukwappg4esb6h/Nathan5.mp3[/audio]
John Adams' "Gnarly Buttons" clarinet concerto, movement II "Hoedown, Mad Cow"

2. [audio]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/0hps629z5x31ir7/Nathan1.mp3[/audio]

3. [audio]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/n70uk9xaqdpcdjq/Nathan2.mp3[/audio]
Gyorgy Ligeti's "Hamburg" horn concerto, movement III "Aria, Aksak, Hoquetus"

4. [audio]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/whsw85lylmqq62o/Nathan3.mp3[/audio]

5. [audio]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/ju9zn5l8c0wiwmd/Nathan4.mp3[/audio]

I think that 4 might be a bit tricky, but the others shouldn't be difficult.

This sounds like an orchestration of "Scarbo" (so, Ravel/Constant)
Yup!

4. one of the 12 Mendelssohn String Symphonies?
Yes, #10. I'm very fond of his set of string symphonies.

Quote from: listener on April 26, 2014, 10:57:45 AM
7. Schumann: Konzertstûck for 4 horns
Correct.

8. Stravinsky  Circus Polka
It is Stravinsky, but it isn't the "Circus Polka". Not a bad guess, though.

That's Kontakte actually. You were close.

#6 sounds like Bartók's Dance Suite.

Damn, I've heard "Kontakte" before. I almost guessed it, too, but instead I decided to be a wise-guy  :( .

#6 sounds like Bartók's Dance Suite.
Correct. It's the very end of the piece. When we played this in orchestra someone said that it sounded like "Sleigh Ride". Our conductor laughed and was like "NO! Why did you say that! That's all I'll hear now!"

Stravinsky's Scherzo à la russe!
Correct. Is it possible to listen to this piece without cracking a smile? So cheerful...

The only one left of mine is #5. I'm surprised that no one has guessed even the composer yet. Many have heard this piece without knowing it.

This one sounds awfully familiar .. but I just can't put my finger on it!
Here's a hint: It has something in common with Bartok's "Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta" and Ligeti's "Lontano". And Ray Noble, for that matter.

My initial reaction is that is it something from Penderecki. So now with your clue, is this from The Shining ?
Yup! My favorite piece by Penderecki. Probably his most "accessible" from his early avant-garde works, too.

At first I thought it might have been from his 3rd Symphony, used in Scorsese's Shutter Island.

Kubrick uses quite a bit of Penderecki in the film but his musical language is apparent. Polymorphia?

"Polymorphia" is used in "The Shining", but this is "The Awakening of Jacob" (sometimes called "The Dream of Jacob"). It sounds cooler in Polish: "Przebudzenie Jakuba" (or looks cooler at least, since I have no idea on earth how to say this!).

Marc, you've got to reveal your last challenge.  It's driving me crazy...I have heard it.
[....]

Octave, sorry for my late reaction.
I almost forgot completely about this thread!

It's from the Motet Komm, Jesu, komm BWV 229, by J.S. Bach.

Yes, the Winter Version. You got the hard one. Just the 2 easy ones left ..

Nice!

Is this one Stockhausen's "Gesang der Junglinge"?

Nope, and I can't really provide any clues either, because I think it would easily reveal this masterwork of electronic music.
I'll keep my eyes (ears?) peeled...
