Of course it's paid somehow. It's called free because there is no tuition fees. This system allows anyone (talented enough) to get an education regardless of how rich or poor their background is. It gives everyone equal opportunities to be succesful in life and it also maximizes the talent pool. The US is said to be the country of opportunities, but in reality opportunities are not the same, but based on what kind of family you are born into.

If this is so, then one wonders why so many people risk their, and their children's, lives and liberty desperately attempting to get into the US --- a topic that's been hotly debated on this very thread but upon whose reality nobody disagreed. Why would anyone take such a risky action if the net result were no better than in their own country?

Good question. El Salvador and Honduras seem to be the worst places in the World when it comes to gun violence. The US is not perfect, but apparently better than Mexico etc.

People in central America have a long way to swim to Slovenia. It's a rather poor East European country and as such probably not the strongest magnet for refugees. However, even they found a way to pay for "free" education with taxes. The US spends as much as the next 8-9 biggest countries combined in military and it has very little to do with defence. Is Syria attacking Florida? The US could cut the military budget in half and still have the largest military by a mile and a half. American soldiers die on offensive strikes outside the US soil. Just end the unnecessory wars and American soldiers stop dying. That's what idiots like me think.

This is not only about Trump's presidency. This is about 10 % of population not having access to basic healthcare in the richest country in the World and 45.000 dying each year because of that just because insurance companies buy politicians and when someone comes along and says we should fix that like every other developped country has, they are called socialist and communists wanting to turn the US into another Venezuela. That kind of stupidity makes any thinking rational person so mad that insults are almost unavoidable!

The best indicator of a child's future wealth is the socioeconomic standing of the parents at the child's birth.

As I said, this is not opinion.

Why people risk much to come here is not related. People come here for many reasons. Many are escaping violence. Others are looking to live better as the stand of living in the USA is higher than it is in Central America. Living poor in the USA is much better than living poor in Honduras for example.
