You might be described by a Yiddish speaker as a Nudnick.

I learn about music here, and improve my vocabulary!  0:)

I've seen it before, but the gleeful spite of others in putting down modernist music bothers me.  Can they actually remember a single bar of the damn thing, or did they just dismiss it without understanding?
What bothers me is when posters insult other posters. You have interpreted a 'vote down' as gleeful spite. Does that mean all negative votes are made in gleeful spite?

Perhaps a better way to handle this is to explain why you love the piece so much and perhaps your enthusiasm for the piece will spill over enough that someone will listen to it or give it a second chance.

Once upon a time, every game I ran had negative votes.  Now, none of them.  I think you know why.  Personally, I always like games with negative votes - sort of a countdown to zero.

I like negative vote games as well. More fun for skints like me. Not everyone can cope, clearly. :)

I'm not playing this game. I do not enjoy negative voting. I like all these pieces. I cannot imagination down voting any of them. It would be like choosing a favorite from a litter of puppies and killing the ones I didn't choose. Not for me.

Amen. I can't do this either.

Sarge, is this what our military has come to?

"...sorry, sir, I cannot engage the enemy at this time, there appears to be a puppy in my field of fire..."

That's actually a serious question (reminds me of the prohibition to kill water buffaloes in Vietnam) but this is not the thread to discuss it  ;)

I'm inclined to agree.

We now have 3 regulars who apparently are not going to participate further, and that's why I stopped running games with negative votes.

I have a suggestion for Jessop - you could cancel out this particular final elimination round and start another one without negative votes or keep going as it.  Of course, I'll continue voting whatever you decide.

If anyone was to ask me why we should change gears, my answer would be couched in terms of participation rates.  Sure, those of us who continue could just keep at it, but a game without decent participation sucks.  I want to influence game outcomes, not control or be the outcome.

San Antone

While I understand Sarge's point, my opinion is this is a harmless game.  But, if too many people opt out, then as Sammy says there won't be enough members for it to work.  The idea of this kind of game is for a consensus to emerge and a meaningful ranking of the works to result.  In the process some works would be voted out.

For me it would be an interesting exercise.

I agree with San Antone. Some works will rise to the top and others will fall to the bottom. Whether they fall due to negative votes in this style game or failure to get positive votes in the other style, the result is the same. They can't all win. The elimination round rules give a different twist to the game, and I think the strategies involved could be entertaining. In the end it is a harmless game where we try to advance our favorite games to the top of the list, nothing more.

In any case, I will participate in this game, whether the rules are changed or not.

ComposerOfAvantGarde

Okay this is turning out interestingly. The negative votes were intended just to help place pieces in a certain order because as far as I care every piece here has been determined a 'winner' in that they have made it to the final round. I could, with a bit more difficulty, sort them into their 'places' based on the upvotes they have received in the previous rounds but that would be less interactive.

I want to have a final round where all pieces get quickly sorted into a top 20 list (as in my heart all these pieces have won based on the votes in the previous rounds). I either want to do this game or put all these pieces into a poll where you click on a button to vote for the five that you like best, so considering that I'll just ask the following question: do you want to continue with this sorting game, shall we have a poll, or shall we have a Sammy style upvote to 100 points game where there is a definite winner?

Baron Scarpia

The poll sounds dull, but I would still vote. Either the up-vote game or the current elimination game are more attractive.

You could do an upvote game with bonus points; it's being done right now on another website (not by me - no vested interest).

I like the negative voting. I wonder if there is a correlation with negative voting and the ability to keep to the posted limits (top 5, top 10, etc.)?!?!
