Extraordinary.

All of his Chopin is superb. He is a very controlled pianist and the Nocturnes respond particularly well to his approach. May not be tops in all the works, but very close.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.5 in E minor, op.64. Evgeny Mravinsky, Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra

Wow, what a performance. As for the music itself, it's a lot better than I realized, and this performance really brings that to light. Tchaikovsky was an amazing melodist, and not half bad as an orchestrator too. I'll be spending more time with this 2CD for sure, but I think soon it will be time to explore the complete cycle. If only Mravinsky recorded the first three symphonies...

Tne next best option is Markevitch/LSO, which is indeed complete.

:)I'm getting that impression. His touch is spectacular.
It's all good...

yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

This disc of Martinu pieces.  Pleasant, but are meant to be didactic pieces.  I probably enjoyed the last two variations the best.  Lovely sound and playing.

Extraordinary.

Indeed! +1 - bought the box inserted above about 4 years ago; Chopin's Nocturnes is one of my top favorites of his numerous genres.  Dave :)

That was my introduction to the Eighth.  Perhaps it is merely imprinting, but I have yet to hear a recording of that symphony which I like better.

In the big box, Op 133 is replaced with Op 131 to make a really long disc.  It's a fair trade.

Canteloube: Songs of the Auvergne [Gomez/Handley]

Oh, how rapturously beautiful these songs are! Some of my favorite vocal music ever written.

Beethoven LV - Violin Sonatas on period instruments w/ Johannes Leertouwer and Julian Reynolds - streaming on Spotify; there has been some recent discussion of these works in the 'Purchases' and 'New Releases' threads; in the latter, a new set (3rd pic below) w/ Jerilyn Jorgensen and Cullan Bryant is about to be released on Amazon USA; after reading reviews in the Fanfare Archives, I decided to order another well reviewed performance w/ Susana Ogata and Ian Watson (4th pic + reviews attached for those interested).  Dave :)

Disc one equivalent.  I'm not sure I have listened to Haydn played on a harpsichord before.  Beghin makes a strong case for it, but I am less sold than on fortepiano.

I like them too. Love the Ensor painting cover art. He had a very bizarre sense of humour.

Somehow the painting suits the mood of the music.
