Louis Glass: Symphony No. 2 in C minor

Once again I hear potential in his writing for orchestra. Two features that appear in this symphony: the use of a male choir in the solemn Adagio and an organ in the 4th movement, though the latter sounds more trivial and is less polishedly played than the others.

Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Good evening, Karl!

I used to listen to Lutosławski frequently years ago (in the early nineties), but then lost interest completely. I'm enjoying the Concerto for Orchestra this time around. Very effective orchestral writing, and nicely constructed piece.

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Im listening to the Naxos recordings of Bright Sheng orchestral music. In particular the Violin Concerto "Let Fly". I'll be attached the world premiere of his new Viola Concerto next month in Philadelphia, so I thought I'd give this a listen. Very Dramatic, Beautiful and enjoyable!Screenshot_20221215-163308_Chrome_1671140869517.jpg

A wonderful selection of orchestrations by other composers. The Passacaglia and Fugue, BWV 582 arranged by Respighi is much better and less flashy to my ears than the one made by Stokowski, and sounds glorious here. That ending is stirring!

Agreed, that's a great set of orchestral transcription; apart from Respighi, I like very much Holst's Fugue à la gigue and Schönberg's Prelude and Fugue 'St Anne' , very ravishing.

Certainly, whereas the Holst has more sobriety, the Schönberg comprises a full display of orchestral exuberance. The final bass-drum stroke is quite something!

Rather entertainingly (well it entertained me) - this disc is marked as having been recorded in "The Chapel of New Broadcasting House Manchester".  Which of course does not exist but I like the idea that the BBC while building a big new broadcasting complex put in a large and acoustically generous religious space.  In fact it was recorded in a standard studio with the reverb knob turned up to 11......

The companion disc is very good too......

I agree, so thrilling! The Holst is a very bright, energetic piece, the choice to arrange Bach's work for a small orchestra fits the lively atmosphere of a gigue very well; the Schönberg is powerful and glorious, with a fine trimbric variety that masterfully combines tone colour with a wise use of expressive possibilities of the instruments, it can perfectly respect and evoke Bach's spirit.
