Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on the Old 104th Psalm Tune.
New arrival today
Great to have a new recording of this quirky, craggy work.
For decades there was only the Boult/Peter Katin version available, then a historic recording from the USA turned up a while back and now there is this fine new recording:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

The first CD was well done, the second CD goes on in the same way.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Serenade in D major for String Trio Op. 8

I had forgotten what an utterly delightful piece of music this is, full of gorgeous tunes, youthful drive and a rustic, earthly zest for life. One of Beethoven's best works.

Quote from: Roasted Swan on December 15, 2022, 11:24:43 PMRather entertainingly (well it entertained me) - this disc is marked as having been recorded in "The Chapel of New Broadcasting House Manchester".  Which of course does not exist but I like the idea that the BBC while building a big new broadcasting complex put in a large and acoustically generous religious space.  In fact it was recorded in a standard studio with the reverb knob turned up to 11......

The companion disc is very good too......

Thanks for mentioning that CD, it's been on my radar for awhile.
Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Never played all four discs in one row, but today I did, and it gives great comfort.
I am also reminded of the fact that the world is in a great turmoil, which pains me enormously.

Louis Glass: Symphonies 3 'Wood Symphony' and 4

The Third is a bucolic piece full of charm and good vibes. The Fourth has some dramatic moments with a rather Brucknerian slow movement; the 2nd mov. shares some gestures with the 3rd. mov from the Third. A fine symphony, albeit the 1st mov. didn't convince me enough.

That Hallé VW CD is arguably the best in the Elder cycle (along with A Pastoral Symphony).

"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

I wouldn't be surprised. I got two installments of the Elder cycle, then stopped because it seemed nothing special, unlike his Elgar. This one is considerably better than they were. Also the sonics seemed notably better compared to most of Halle's CDs.

Pur Natus in Bethlehem.
Advent and Christmas Music.
Nun komm der Heiden Heiland; In dulci jubilo; Vom Himmel hoch; Puer natus in Bethlehem; Conditor alme siderum; Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ; Resonet in laudibus; A solis ortu cardine.

Bremer Barock Consort and der Hochschule fur Kunste, Manfred Cordes.

Bought this CD in 2007 and had quite forgotten about this Gem. It is soberly presented as is wont in a protestant church. The ensemble and singers are really projecting the music in a brittle yet angelic fashion. I like it very much. Sopranos can be a bit strained at times, but not in a serious way. The music by Praetorius is of a high level. It is recorded in the Stiftskirche at Bassum, so it has a fine ambiance.
