Quote from: Spotted Horses on August 24, 2023, 08:10:10 AMThis is from the days when some were saying he was the modern Furtwangler. I vaguely remember listening to this set and generally liking it, perhaps including the 4th.

That was Hurwitz that described Barenboim's Beethoven that way.  It became his gold standard LvB symphony cycle.  I love that set myself, but I recognize that many will find it too slow and stodgy.  I think that most people would prefer Wand or Blomstedt if they want a traditional performance.

Morton Feldman: Palais de Mari; Triadic Memories. Alfonso Gómez

Palais still has yet to really click for me, though I've heard it half a dozen times in three different recordings. But Triadic Memories is sounding amazing right now.

Well-crafted, concise, wholly attractive works that don't sound particularly American.

I relistened to Dvorak's Piano Quintet #2.

I love the Ravel by Laplante that I've heard. I wasn't aware of the recording you've posted here. I have a different Ravel/Laplante recording that has Miroirs, Pavane, Jeux d'eau among others. Excellent stuff.

I'm finding much pleasure discovering and re-discovering Roussel's chamber music. The Divertissement for piano and wind quintet, for instance, is a little gem. No doubts why he is one of my favorite French composers.

Interesting, my recording looks like this:

There is no mention on it anywhere of it being part of a larger set, good to know he has recorded more Ravel works. Thanks for the info.

Now listening to another of my favorite pianists in Ravel, Monique Haas:

I have almost lost interest in Mahler because of such interpretations. There is no hysteria in reality, only in minds. Some people like to imagine and reproduce hysteria, well, it happens. I'll listen to something else.
