Symphonic Addict

Gade: Symphony No. 2

Pretty amiable yet pretty Mendelssohnian too.

Scriabin: Le Poème du feu

I had forgot how exuberant and rich sounds this composition has.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Symphonic Addict

Giannini: Symphony No. 4

Truly a spectacular work with forward momentum whose style is like a cross between Hindemith and Hanson. The slow movement is especially ravishing.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

This Del Mar "In the South" is famous for having been recorded in a single take.  From memory I recall its a fine performance.  The Concerto was recorded very early in Cohen's career when he was the next young player burdened with the mantle of "the next Du Pre".  Again from memory I seem to remember it as a more thoughtful even elegiac performance than Du Pre.  I must revisit this disc!

I can't recall the content of Todd's comments on William Youn's recordings of Schubert's sonatas. However, paid attention after those. Very good indeed.

I watched that great Film Noir 'Double Indemnity' (1944) the other night and noticed this being performed, in the background, at a concert in the Hollywood Bowl:

Today, switching from CPE Bach (1714-1784) to his much younger half-brother:

Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782) - Keyboard Sonatas, Op. 5 & Op. 17 - own Bart van Oort in both on fortepiano, and Sophie Yates in Op. 5 on harpsichord, and finally Alberto Nose in Op. 17 on piano (reviews of each attached for the interested).

Another extremely prolific composer - list of his works HERE* - he composed 34 solo keyboard pieces (bottom pic) - seems that Op. 5/17 are the main ones performed (cannot find much else in the list on Amazon at least).  Dave :)

* The Collected Works of Johann Christian Bach is a 48 volume edition of the music of J.C. Bach published by Garland Publishing from 1984 to 1999. The general editor was the musicologist and J.C. Bach expert Ernest Warburton. Vol. 48 of the edition is a Thematic Catalog of this composer's work prepared by Warburton (Source).

Quote from: SurprisedByBeauty on September 30, 2023, 07:12:09 AMTD: The final Trio of Rosenkavalier just came on. Always gorgeous. I either have to cry to it, or whistle along. (Though not the two at the same time... which I put down to my whistling somewhat diminishing the glorious effect.)
Interesting!  Personally, I just let myself "wallow" in it--and yes, probably I have some moisture in my eyes too.   ;)  Such a touching story and glorious singing.  :)

Haydn: Symphony No. 63 in C Major, "La Roxelane"

The other night I had a dream, of which all I could remember was boldly stating that my favourite Haydn symphony was No.63. But I had no recollection of ever having heard it before so thought I should check it out, and did so with the performance above with joyous results. What an absolutely irresistible and sunny piece piece it is, just brimming with life. And Adam Fischer's conducting seems as natural as breathing, there's such a freshness and natural grace to the music with him. A slam dunk love-at-first-listen.

Bach, JC - Chamber Music in my collection on the first 5 CDs below (listing at the bottom from the Warburton Catalog - * my interpretation, i.e. flute replaces violin).  In the 'Chamber Category' there are about 108 works listed of which I have 30; many of the rest are 'KB/Violin Sonatas, Trio Sonatas, et al' - now there is a CD of Op. 16 for harpsichord/violin (last pic shown) which is rather expensive in a variety of markets.  Dave :)

Spotted Horses

I've rounded out my traversal of the McEwen String Quartets with Quartet No 2 (included in volume 3).

An attractive work, but I'd say less individual than the many of the other works in the collection. I rank the McEwen String Quartets as a major discovery for me, and expect to return to them in the future.

As a chaser, a small suite of dances by Martinu, 3 Dances Tcheques, performed by Georgia Koukl.

Really bracing little pieces. I decided to get Koukl a try because his recordings of the Martinu Piano Concerti has been impressive. Perhaps I'll collect the whole set of Martinu Piano music.
