Saxophone Concerto Jamboree!!!

Glazunov, Aho, Sculthorpe

From these recordings:

All three concerti are just exquisite. The Aho is a first-listen from a small haul I had placed with BIS a month or so ago.

Müthel, Johann Gottfried (1728-1788) - Clavichord Sonatas & Arioso performed by Menno van Delft; played on a 5-octave clavichord by J.A. Hass, 1763 (Hamburg), shown below.  Müthel was JS Bach's last student.  One of the best sounding clavichord recordings in my collection of that instrument - more in the attachment about the company, Teknon and some of its recordings.  Dave :)

The 1st:

Such a scintillating performance. This newer Japan remaster sounds superb.

This recording is a cracker! It was also my very first Walton recording way back in the early 80's.

It sure is, Paul. I don't really understand what Jeffrey finds so objectionable about this performance. It's a classic reading.

Violin Concerto

This is my first time listening to this Little/Litton performance of the VC. Sounds promising so far. I've always appreciated Little's musicianship, especially in British music. Again, I don't understand Jeffrey's opinion of this concerto. I think it's bloody marvelous!

I have the very nicely presented Japanese release. I must give it another listen to. For some reason I never liked Previn's recording that much (and I speak as a great admirer of André Previn). I used to not like Previn's recording of VW's 6th Symphony but now I've come to appreciate it much more. So, who knows?

I enjoy it but much prefer the Viola Concerto, which I think is the much greater work.

Yes, I think if you just try to enjoy the performance in the moment and clear your mind of every other performance you've heard, then I think you'll find much to enjoy. I absolutely was enthralled by the performance and it still remains my favorite above them all.

We'll have to agree to disagree here, my friend. :)

Yeah, I often enjoy contrasting works of very different styles/composers. I get tired quickly when I hear many works of the same composer in a row.

Why this concerto isn't in the mainstream repertory is beyond me. Enchanting.

That Reger disc is stupendous.
Do you gents have a favorite work from that disc?  Or like both?  I don't know his works well.

James MacMillan: Symphony No.5 'Le grand Inconnu':

I want to get familiar with MacMillan's music. How is this symphony, Jeffrey? By looking at the cover art I would think the music is good.
