From this excellent set:

I had a dream last night about Delius' music and I'm not sure why exactly, but I figured I'd listen to some shorter works before heading off to hell's kitchen.

Earlier (whilst my wife was in the garden centre) Tubin Symphony No.1 - I'd forgotten what a great and inspiriting work this is is. It reminded more of Kaljo Raid's, equally impressive, 1st Symphony rather that of any of the other Tubin symphonies:

Now - Malcolm Arnold's Symphony No.2

I'm trending towards revisiting the Tubin symphonies, and I don't think I've heard the First.

RTE Concert Orchestra, Andrew Penny.

Time for Ballet music, and what better as to play this delightful disc with a recording Andrew Penny made in 1992, which was released recently, taken from the Marco Polo label. Penny knows how to make the music by Sullivan work. Sullivan is a master of catchy melodies, and an abundance of joy. Sound is quite good, and the performance is no disappointment either. Yummy.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I think that it's most impressive Karl and was delighted to hear it again - I hope that you enjoy it as well.

Paganini is one of those composers who quite rarely appears on my listens, so today I decided to try his string quartets to figure out how they sound like. With this only listen has been more than enough.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

In this case I'm more fond of the Raid because it's more memorable, albeit I also enjoy the Tubin.

I was unaware Previn had recorded the Korngold Symphony, Jeffrey. I have Kempe which I believe a premiere recording.

Yes, and it's a stirring performance. It appears on this CD:

Debussy: Cello Sonata
Jean-Guihen Queyras (cello), Alexandre Tharaud (piano)

A striking take on this sonata. The middle movement Serenade for example, already rather a fragmented mosaic, feels deconstructed to the point where at moments, it sounds as if it could have been written decades later. A recording that's grown on me the more I listen.

Lumen in Christo is very nicely done. Perhaps even one if my favorites, of Hanson's scores.

Coincidentally  Paganini was on the menu this weekend, and just once wasn't enough  ;D.

Both recordings by James Ehnes (1994 and 2009) are superb, but IMO the more recent one is better. On Telarc Ehnes' tone is sweet, gleaming and rounded, while on Onyx it displays a denser core while still being immaculate. It's more the gestures that have changed: better defined, more decisive, less decorative in the 2009 recording. A great disc.
