I find the Sawallisch set of the symphonies  for example having a relative lightness as regards Schumann generally, that works well, especially in the 4th and 1st Symphonies.

But then, Haitink/Concertgebouw in the Manfred Ouverture or the 3rd Symphony also have a massiveness, that fits those works well too.

I hear no clumsy heaviness in the piano concerto, on the contrary, for example with Argerich/Harnoncourt. Plenty of lyricism and energetic flight there, IMHO.

No clumsy heaviness, indeed.

Symphonic Addict

Absorbing, fascinating. Mathias was a master of big statements in small formats.

Looks interesting, André. What work struck you the most?
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Harty: Three Pieces for oboe and piano

Yet another case where the name of the work doesn't do any service to the music itself. These are pieces with personality and charm.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Symphonic Addict

The main course here is the Piano Quintet. A very memorable and joyful work. The slow movement is quite something.

The string quartets are decent pieces overall.

One of his finest shorter works IMO.

Early morning listening before work:
Bloch 'From Jewish Life' for Cello and Piano (1925) - new release.
'This is nice music' (unusual comment from my wife on walking through the room)  ;D
I suspect that Kyle would enjoy this disc:

"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Morning listening:

This will survive the culling axe - it is a pleasure to hear it again.  :)

Early morning listening.

Vaclav Gunther Jacob.
Missa dei Filii.
Dixit Dominus, Credo, Offertorium, Sanctus, Agnus Dei.
Vezirius Turcicus.

Valentin Rathgeber.
Concertos, opus 19, No. 3, & 1, Opus 6. No. 6.
Capella Regia Praha, on period instruments, Robert Hugo.

A very successful series.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Joachim Raff.
Piano Works, volume I.
World Premiere Recordings.

Frühlingsboten.
Drei Klavier-Soli.
Fantaisie in B major.

Tra Nguyen, piano.

The Drei Klavier Soli are considered one of Raff's greatest piano pieces, especially the last piece, "Metamorphosen", wich by and large it is. But "Frühlingsboten" I consider also one of the pieces I like most. Raff's expression is passionate and committed, to paint a picture that covers the emotions depicted, to perfection. Every note counts in these compositions. Tra Nguyen is a fabulous musician, her playing has a sparkle that astounds me throughout the all the volumes of this box. She never disappoints you, all is balanced and well thought out.

Good morning all,

Some Debussy songs to start the day.
The Ariettes oubliées are gorgeous !

Babbitt 5, which seems as contrapuntally interesting as anything by Carter. I'm enjoying this set very much. How anyone can say this music is inexpressive or unpoetic or not lyrical or lacks an audible design, all these clichés about serialism, beats me!

Graham Whettam: Sinfonia Intrepida (1976)
My replacement copy arrived. It's a powerful, brooding and memorable score:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Franz Schubert.

Symphony No. 2 in A flat major & No. 4, "Die Tragische" in C minor.

Anima Eterna Brugge, Jos van Immerseel.

I consider these performances one of the best on the market. For me this is the way how to play them. Superb sound. Fine period instruments.

And, you see, my favourite of the Schumann symphonies is the Spring Symphony (although it really isn't the 1st symphony).  Has been for a long time.

Mine, too --- one of the greatest Firsts. I also have a soft spot for the 4th which is full of gorgeous, memorable tunes. But I can't say I dislike any single one of them.

For symphonies, I prefer Schumann to Brahms.

Absolutely!  :)  As close to "definitive" as can be.

CD VII.

Johannes Brahms.

Complete Hungarian Dances.

LSO, Neeme Järvi.

The music is out to impress and delight. Brahms knew how to shape melodies into a charm offensive.  And Järvi knows how to give them that extra zest. Fine performance and recording.

Phantasiestücke, Op.88

These days we are spoilt for choice in this repertoire! While the  Beaux Arts used to be the only game in town..

How is this set by the Trio Wanderer? :)

Have listened only to the Op. 88. It's very good and conveys the passionate and dreamy Schumannesque soundworld in a convincing and engaging manner. SOTA sound.
