NP:

Dvořák
Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53
Faust
Prague Philharmonia
Bělohlávek

Outstanding performance. One reviewer gave this particular performance a negative review because he felt that Faust wasn't 'Slavic' enough --- ummm...whatever the hell this means! She has Bělohlávek with the Prague Philharmonia accompanying her, what more could you ask for? I hate it when people nitpick something that they have no way of actually detecting. Anyway, this performance is scintillating.

Well, John, not being Slavic enough to me means everybody on the planet who is not an ethnic Slavic speaker along with every Slav who cannot play the violin and also the vast majority of those who cannot play this concerto. That leaves very, very few people in my estimation.
Faust is a world class musician, The Prague Philharmonia would have world class musicians and all of them conducted by a world class conductor.
Either that or the reviewer thinks that Faust is Slavic and is not particularly true to her Slavic musical heritage.
So, either way, that reviewer is an idiot who is displaying a large ego and a small brain.
Just my two cents.  ;)

I agree on all points you raise, Fergus. I guess it's true that you simply cannot please everyone, so one mustn't even try! :)

Well, the Elgar box is  canceled, the seller on ebay has informed me that he cannot arrange the shipment due to illness. Fortunately I was able to cancel the purchase via paypal and the  payment is back on my account.
Unfortunately , another set with a friendly price has just been sold on ebay .  :o

That is unfortunate, Jan, but I am sure that you will eventually track another one down. You always do  ;)

Why not message the seller an ask the seller to contact you when he/she is better if you are still interested?

Just buy the Boult box and call it day. ;) If you're looking for the chamber works, the Hyperion recordings (w/ The Nash Ensemble and Goldner String Quartet) will do nicely.

The Elgar Boult box set:

I have the 30 CD Traverso intended to get, and while it has its strenghths, I think the choral works were badly mastered/engineered: I could barely make out the words, and sometimes not even that, when the chorus was doing its part. Do you know if they were remastered for the newer box? If so hopefully they'll be re-issued at some point.

CD 4.
The contents of this CD were put together in a random sort of manner, and Brain recorded several things more than once, which leads to some oddities, such as Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Winds appearing twice on CD 3. But the musicianship is first rate.

And now:

Dvořák
Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65
Isabelle Faust (violin), Jean-Guihen Queyras (cello), Alexander Melnikov (piano)

Such exquisite beauty!

I think the Warner set uses whatever was the latest remastering from EMI as this set was simply a compilation. Honestly, I'm okay with not being able to hear the words in Elgar's choral works. But if I do want to hear the words, I have Mark Elder's performances, which in these large oratorios, he's much better than Boult.

For me, this is one of Elgar's greatest works.

It's a nice work and I remain grateful to Glazunov who completed it, but I wouldn't make the claim that it's essential listening, but certainly worth hearing.

No.3 in very much in the vein of the first two BUT a) it is incomplete - just 2 movements and b) what there is was "completed" by Glazunov/Rimsky.  Not that that's a bad thing but I've never read a detailed study of exactly how much is "authentic" Borodin and how much is a good pastiche by the other two.  But  a lovely piece in its own right.  What an extraordinary tune-smith Borodin was!! (but I love the musical Kismet as well because of the tunes!)

Its unfinished...that explains why I never bothered with it. I may find it on the internet rather than another purchase, although the Svetlanov sounds right up my alley. Thanks all!

Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony 8 in F Major, op. 93
Berlin Philharmonic
Herbert von Karajan (1977)

I don't think I am going to have time to finish this today, but the 9th will be a nice start to tomorrow. Karajan's 70's Beethoven symphony cycle has been a wonderful revisit. Certainly a set for those who want a big sound and muscular herosim in their Beethoven symphonies. The Dolby Atmos Blu-ray is recommendable, but no CD's are included.

Lets see if I can get through this...previous attempts never held my interest

I tried to like The Gothic with the Naxos recording for years. When Marty Brabbins came along with his on Hyperion, maybe it was my mood or I got more sleep, but I took to it much better.
