This is one of my CD's  :)

Have you ever listened to it?  >:D :P

Seriously now, Reynaldo Leonhardt do sound cool, don't you think? It's a beautiful alliteration, to these ears at least.

It's happy hour so go ahead.

I once had morbid fantasies about Leonhard sitting behind a huge drum set accompanied by Koopman on baritone saxophone.  :D

My morbid fantasies in this respect are (1) Leonhardt playing Ernesto Nazareth on a Steinway and (2) Koopman playing Louis Moreau Gottschalk on a Boesendorfer --- and both of them having great fun. No, really, could you even picture Leonhardt and Koopman smiling, let alone loughing out loud?  ;D

They  are/were both very private persons, laughing out loud seems to be a bit uncivil. :)

This the ultimate I think.

Ingrid is a fantastic Mozart performer  :)  I'm not so excited about Uchida  :)

When you have one leg in the grave already, you can afford a little public smile. ;D

The beer was for Ingrid. I haven't heard Mitsuko yet but I have a hunch she'd deserve a Courvoisier Grand Reserve VSOP instead of a mere pint.

A bit harshly worded, although he was very formal by modern standards, he could really see the sun shining in the water.  :)

A bit harshly worded,

You kidding? Very harshly worded but I was just joking, of course --- I doubt, though, that the stern Calvinist Leonhardt would have known what a joke is, let alone enjoyed one.  ;D

Seriously now, I'm sure that in private he had his moments.  :)

I am listening to Wand's live Schumann:

The thing that immediately strikes is how thick he likes the orchestra to sound. A matter of taste - personally a little orchestral slimming and a bit more bounce would prove beneficial in my opinion.

Regardless, the Brahms 4, Schumann 3 and 4 are good but not groundbreaking recordings. Don't particularly justify his reputation as one of the great conductors of the 20th century.
If you are interested in listening to orchestrations of solo/chamber music, you might be interested in this thread.

He was indeed a very respectable man, in some ways he is an alien to me, as he seemed trapped in an era that had passed.
Anyway, as a musician I have the greatest respect for him,he tried to live by his conviction.
He was no fool although the lighting at home was mainly by candles.  :)

How would you rate this set, Karl? It's next in line after I finish Anda.

Enjoying it a great deal, Andrei. I'm not really listening for comparison as yet, just reveling in the fine performances of great music.

Well, not entirely. This is from an obituary:

"He was an aristocratic man, in some ways demonstrating odd contradictions. His living environment was utterly 18th century - a CD player and fax machine were, I think, grudging additions to the household. At the same time he had a passion for fast cars. I remember going on a trip with him and Marie to see a couple of old organs in Holland; being carried there extremely fast along the Dutch motorway in his latest Alfa."

Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.
