The 1st SQ has a bittersweet and unsettling character. Both quartets are fantastic, and the 2nd sounds like more optimistic overall.

There are quite a few differences I think ... IIRC eruptions of exasperation/anger are more overt in the second for example, and there is perhaps more variety in the overall tone of it. But as you say, both are fantastic and for me a rich addition to the canon. And I'm still getting to know them ..  :)

I should add the Maggini are magnificent in both! There are times when they achieve a sound so diaphanous, it's almost as if the music's breathing has expired .. magical.

Schumann Piano Sonata No. 1 in F-Sharp Minor, Op. 11
Reine Gianoli (piano)

Very nice. There's an appealing honesty and individuality to Gianoli's playing that really fits Schumann's music well. Looking forward to hearing more of this set.

Well, back to:

Boccherini, Luigi (1743-1805) - String Quartets w/ various performers - just sampling 3 discs for the late afternoon; actually own 9 CDs of the SQuartets or about 3 dozen Op. works - however, looking at his catalog HERE for chamber music w/ 4 instruments, he wrote 91 w/ Gérard numbers (G.159-249), plus about 18 or so others as arrangements/transcriptions - believe that I have enough!   Dave

I am mildly scandalized by the consideration that this is the first I have heard any of these.

Antheil, and Storgårds in Antheil, rarely put a foot wrong, in my book.

Grateful for beautiful music this evening.

Apologies for the lack of cover art.

Hey JBS - will be curious about your comments?  I have the Raphael Ensemble w/ good reviews, BUT just on Amazon MP and saw that a favorite period group of mine (L'Archibudelli) had recorded these works - hmm, a used copy is available, might consider an order?  Dave :)

Last night I became completely obsessed with Chopin mazurkas and listened to every opus from 17 to 59. Not in that strict order.
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

That is an obsession I might emulate.

OK, you got my attention. ;D Going to try to hear this soon. I'm hearing the Eighth live in June with the Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä, in his final concerts with the group before he leaves.

Good for you Bruce ! I've never heard the Symphony of a Thousand in concert  :-X, certainly not something to be missed if it comes your way !

FWIW David Hurwitz gives this recording 10/10. I found out after listening to the disc and was pleased to read that he, too, finds the recorded sound outstanding. The old ears are not in bad shape after all  :D.

Given my lack of familiarity with these works, there's not much I can say beyond saying I liked what I heard.  But I think you can't go wrong with anything L'Archibudelli has done.

Another CD from that Presto order

It would be nice if M. Chamayou recorded more of this composer (especially the solo works).

Novak's 'De Profundis', written during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, is profoundly moving and contradicts the oft-stated view that Novak's greatest works were all written during the early part of his career (the South Bohemian Suite is another great work from the later part of his life). I also like Vogel's older performance of 'De Profundis' - do you know it Cesar?

Actually, I don't, Jeffrey, but I'll keep your tip in mind. Thank you!
