Debussy, Claude (1862-1918) - Orchestral Works - 4 of the 8 CDs from the Jean Martinon box - I've had these for years and have not explored much further - there is a 6-CD Boulez box but have not given the recordings a try yet?  Dave :)

I'm glad I only paid peanuts for this, my first venture into Birtwistle's music. Previously I had only heard him on the radio for a few minutes before switching channels. I found that although all three works begin with an unpleasant ruffling of feathers the music eventually settles into a collage of consonant sounds. Nothing to send the cat climbing the curtains. Nothing to write home about either. Not unpleasant, but not sure I'll listen to it again.

JSB: St. John Passion[Cleobury] - Part II

Cleobury's presentation certainly portrays the colour, tension and drama of the Passion. I like the light, airy texture of the choral singing; it somehow seems to bring a sense of urgency to the proceedings. It certainly does not weigh things down. The instrumentalists play very well and they are well driven by Cleobury [Roy Goodman leads the Brandenburg Consort].

Hi

Just received an album seem rare of John Carver Masses.

Scottish Renaissance Polyphony Robert Carver
6 Part Mass. 4 Part Mass L'homme armé
Capella Nova direction: Alan
Tavever on Music Heritage Society.

This is not on any labels I'm aware of neither : The cardinal'S Music or The Sixteen.

So far it's good decent offering.

That it for now.

Yes I have the CDs, but somehow I've never really explored them, I'll try to listen properly this week. I've just started one of them. Those soaring angelic voices, a Taverner sound world.

Lovely, Cesar. I love all of Respighi's works for violin and orchestra (and the violin/piano works, too).

I'm a little less fond of the Concerto all'antica, and I do need to explore the violin/piano works besides the Violin Sonata in B minor.

Great looking CD Cesar! I enjoyed 'Church Windows' on the radio yesterday.
PS I just found a cheap copy online, so I ordered it  ::)

Good, Jeffrey! I hope you'll enjoy it.

Ukrainian Christmas Carols - a wonderful orchestral work, rather in the spirit of Liadov's 'Eight Russian Folksongs' - very moving, especially in current circumstances (performed by Theodore Kuchar with the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine). Thanks to Harry for the recommendation:

Here's David Hurwitz, enthusing wildly over the CD in a recent video:

Silly cover aside, the man is a serious artist.
