Well, have not posted here recently - we've been watching some TV series and doing several 'Great Courses' on Wondrium, BUT the films below in the last 4-5 days:

Peter Pan & Wendy (2023), just released on Disney+ channel - summary below w/ the stars; did not like the looks of Molony but Ever Anderson was attractive - bottom line is that we were not impressed although the CGI graphics were excellent - not a re-watch - I'd probably do a 3+*/5* rating on Amazon; 65%, Rotten Tomatoes; 6.1/10, IMDB - probably would recommend watching w/ kids.

Pollyanna (1960) w/ Hayley Mills (14 y/o) debut for Disney; other stars below - never seen by Susan who had some tears in her eyes at the end - highly recommended to watch w/ kids!

Chicago (2002) w/ actors in synopsis below - have seen twice on Broadway (original and revival) - we enjoy this rendition and have watched a half dozen times!  ;D  Dave

QuotePeter Pan & Wendy is a 2023 American fantasy adventure film directed by David Lowery from a screenplay he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks. Jim Whitaker served as producer on the Walt Disney Pictures production, which is a live-action adaptation of Walt Disney's 1953 animated film Peter Pan, in turn based on the 1904 play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up by J. M. Barrie. The film stars Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson in the title roles. Jude Law, Yara Shahidi; et al in supporting roles. The story follows Peter Pan and Wendy, who go to the magical world of Neverland with Wendy's brothers and Tinker Bell. Along the way, Wendy embarks on the adventure that will change her life and encounters Peter's archenemy Captain Hook. (Source)

QuotePollyanna is a 1960 American comedy-drama film starring child actress Hayley Mills, Jane Wyman, Karl Malden, and Richard Egan in a story about a cheerful orphan changing the outlook of a small town. The film was written and directed by David Swift, based on the 1913 novel Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter. The film won Hayley Mills an Academy Juvenile Award. It was the last film of actor Adolphe Menjou. Pollyanna was Hayley Mills' first of six films for Disney, and the directorial debut of David Swift. (Source)

QuoteChicago is a 2002 American musical black comedy crime film based on the 1975 stage musical of the same name. It explores the themes of celebrity, scandal, and corruption in Chicago during the Jazz Age. The film stars an ensemble cast led by Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere. Chicago centers on Roxie Hart (Zellweger) and Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones), two murderers who find themselves in jail together awaiting trial in 1920s Chicago. Roxie, a housewife, and Velma, a vaudevillian, fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows. Chicago was critically acclaimed, with particular praise given to the performances of the cast. The film went on to win six Academy Awards in 2003, including Best Picture, making it the first musical to win Best Picture since Oliver!i n 1968; Zeta-Jones, Best Supporting Actress. (Source)

Atlantic City (1981) w/ an older Burt Lancaster and a young, attractive Susan Sarandon - seen on release but 'new' to my collection last night as an Amazon HD streaming purchase - we really enjoyed; ratings: 100%, Rotten Tomatoes, 4*/4*, Leonard Maltin; 7.3/10, IMDB - recommended if the story is of interest (check the link below for more).  Dave :)

QuoteAtlantic City is a Canadian independent romantic-gangster film directed by Louis Malle, and starring Burt Lancaster, Susan Sarandon, Kate Reid, Robert Joy et al. A Canadian-French co-production released later in the United States  by Paramount Pictures. The film opened to critical acclaim and was nominated for the Big Five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Lancaster), Best Actress (Sarandon), and Best Original Screenplay, but did not win in any category. In Canada, it won Genie Awards for Best Performance by a Foreign Actress (for Sarandon), Best Supporting Actress (for Reid), and Best Art Direction, with three additional nominations. (Source)

I'm not a fan either, but more because so many people my age watched it and learned exactly the wrong lesson from it.

Thank you for your list of favorites Dave! I know she and I have seen Annie Hall and Hannah and her Sisters together, and I have seen Manhattan and Danny Rose myself. I'll keep these others in mind too, though.

Wasn't he the old man in Field of Dreams or am I thinking of someone else?

Well, I had to refresh my memory about 'Field of Dreams' (1989) - from the Wiki article quoted below; indeed, Lancaster was in the film as Dr. Archibald 'Moonlight' Graham - was his last film (he died in 1994) - Dave

P.S. only saw the movie once on release - one of my least favorite 'sports' film - I'm sure others will disagree?  But for an interesting 'negative' take on the film, this review is an interesting read.

QuoteThe character played by Burt Lancaster and Frank Whaley, Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, is based on an actual baseball player with the same name. His character is largely true to life except for a few factual liberties taken for artistic reasons. For instance, the real Graham's lone major league game occurred in June 1905, rather than on the final day of the 1922 season. The real Graham died in 1965, as opposed to 1972 as the film depicts. In the film, Terence Mann interviews a number of people about Graham. The DVD special points out that the facts they gave him were taken from articles written about the real man. (Source)

Not sure if this counts as genuine "disagreement," but I've never seen it, and am disinclined to.

I've only seen little shreds of it, channel-surfing. I understand that Burgess Meredith did a fine job.

I've never actually seen any of the Rocky movies.

But if we're talking about boxing, certainly Raging Bull would need to be part of the discussion.

I guess I never thought of Raging Bull as a "sports film", but of course it is. That would indeed be my favourite of the genre.

I may or may not actually watch the first at some point. My lack of interest in the sequels is of a truly epic scale.

My favorite sports movie is Moneyball, probably because of its philosophical themes woven into character portraits.

Wife and I saw Rocky on release in 1976 in Fayetteville (Ft. Bragg, Army Medical Corps - 2 years I owed Uncle Sam after my radiology residency) and have re-watched a number of times (own as an Amazon UHD streamer).

But I was wondering what 'sports-related' films are in my video collection - below a listing of 20 movies dating from 1942 to 2010 of all varieties (added the subject in parentheses for those not familiar w/ any); now I've seen many more over the decades but just have not made purchases - Dave :)
