Gul Madred... the most memorable Cardassian of all, imho. And Ronny Cox as Capt. Jellicoe, in the same episode...

Show me a current series, anywhere, with as much relevance and dramatic weight as is displayed in " Chain of Command ".

Quote from: Karl Henning on April 28, 2023, 09:00:25 PMAt last satisfying what was ever the mildest strain of curiosity: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Over time I'd heard various reports of disappointment with this,  the sharpest d. coming from individuals who went into the cinema for it, the year of its release. Agreed that it's pretty weak among the movies,  but following @San Antone 's lead, here in the comfort of home I found it enjoyable enough. Its shortcomings notwithstanding, an enjoyable nostalgia trip, all in all.

Last night I listened to the Shatner (father and daughter) commentary. Not excessively self-indulgent, and of some interest, but overall IMO perhaps the poorest of the Trek film commentaries I've tuned into. Not bad, absolutely, just faring poorly among its peers.

Tonight's "It's about time" item: New York Stories. The Scorsese "Life Lessons" was good storytelling, but such a slice of seedy artistic life, I kind of felt I needed to take a shower after. The Coppola, "Life Without Zoe," was thoroughly charming, and an added bonus was: great use of the solo flute from L'après-midi d'un faune. The Allen, "Œdipus Wrecks" is just getting started, and his characteristic titles font is itself a bit like visual comfort food.

In two parts over the weekend, the 1946 movie The Best Years of our Lives about three World War II veterans returning in the same flight to their hometown from their respective military group and facing their own and their families' readjustments to "normal" life.

Picked this movie at random based on its high IMDB rating. Well acted and scripted, touching and worth your time.

25th Hour is a 2002 American drama film directed by Spike Lee and starring Edward Norton. Adapted by David Benioff from his own 2001 debut novel The 25th Hour, it tells the story of a man's last 24 hours of freedom as he prepares to go to prison for seven years for dealing drugs.

I am a fan of Spike Lee, Edward Norton, and Terence Blanchard who often writes the music for Spike Lee's films.  While I enjoyed the movie, I thought it could have benefitted from some editing.  It seems to drag in places and overall felt too long.  But I did enjoy it.

Feeling a bit mixed over this one, though it has undeniably funny (even at times hilarious) moments.

Really liked Blanchard's soundtrack to HBO's Perry Mason remake

Just watched Another Woman. Man, that was good! And superb use of both Debussy's orchestration of Satie's Gymnopédie, and of Varèse's Ecuatorial.

Well, have not posted here recently - we've been watching some TV series and doing several 'Great Courses' on Wondrium, BUT the films below in the last 4-5 days:

Peter Pan & Wendy (2023), just released on Disney+ channel - summary below w/ the stars; did not like the looks of Molony but Ever Anderson was attractive - bottom line is that we were not impressed although the CGI graphics were excellent - not a re-watch - I'd probably do a 3+*/5* rating on Amazon; 65%, Rotten Tomatoes; 6.1/10, IMDB - probably would recommend watching w/ kids.

Pollyanna (1960) w/ Hayley Mills (14 y/o) debut for Disney; other stars below - never seen by Susan who had some tears in her eyes at the end - highly recommended to watch w/ kids!

Chicago (2002) w/ actors in synopsis below - have seen twice on Broadway (original and revival) - we enjoy this rendition and have watched a half dozen times!  ;D  Dave

QuotePeter Pan & Wendy is a 2023 American fantasy adventure film directed by David Lowery from a screenplay he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks. Jim Whitaker served as producer on the Walt Disney Pictures production, which is a live-action adaptation of Walt Disney's 1953 animated film Peter Pan, in turn based on the 1904 play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up by J. M. Barrie. The film stars Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson in the title roles. Jude Law, Yara Shahidi; et al in supporting roles. The story follows Peter Pan and Wendy, who go to the magical world of Neverland with Wendy's brothers and Tinker Bell. Along the way, Wendy embarks on the adventure that will change her life and encounters Peter's archenemy Captain Hook. (Source)

QuotePollyanna is a 1960 American comedy-drama film starring child actress Hayley Mills, Jane Wyman, Karl Malden, and Richard Egan in a story about a cheerful orphan changing the outlook of a small town. The film was written and directed by David Swift, based on the 1913 novel Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter. The film won Hayley Mills an Academy Juvenile Award. It was the last film of actor Adolphe Menjou. Pollyanna was Hayley Mills' first of six films for Disney, and the directorial debut of David Swift. (Source)

QuoteChicago is a 2002 American musical black comedy crime film based on the 1975 stage musical of the same name. It explores the themes of celebrity, scandal, and corruption in Chicago during the Jazz Age. The film stars an ensemble cast led by Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere. Chicago centers on Roxie Hart (Zellweger) and Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones), two murderers who find themselves in jail together awaiting trial in 1920s Chicago. Roxie, a housewife, and Velma, a vaudevillian, fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows. Chicago was critically acclaimed, with particular praise given to the performances of the cast. The film went on to win six Academy Awards in 2003, including Best Picture, making it the first musical to win Best Picture since Oliver!i n 1968; Zeta-Jones, Best Supporting Actress. (Source)

Atlantic City (1981) w/ an older Burt Lancaster and a young, attractive Susan Sarandon - seen on release but 'new' to my collection last night as an Amazon HD streaming purchase - we really enjoyed; ratings: 100%, Rotten Tomatoes, 4*/4*, Leonard Maltin; 7.3/10, IMDB - recommended if the story is of interest (check the link below for more).  Dave :)

QuoteAtlantic City is a Canadian independent romantic-gangster film directed by Louis Malle, and starring Burt Lancaster, Susan Sarandon, Kate Reid, Robert Joy et al. A Canadian-French co-production released later in the United States  by Paramount Pictures. I'm not a fan either, but more because so many people my age watched it and learned exactly the wrong lesson from it.
