I've been watching a lot of OLD films (mostly B&W) 'burned' from the TCM channel - have not really posted since many would not be of much interest on this thread, but tonight watching a film w/ some stars that are great and a rather tragic actress who did not make that many movies:

Come & Get It (1936) w/ Edward Arnold, Francis Farmer, Joel McCrea et al - Farmer was just a beautiful gal; plus, Arnold is one of my favorite character actors from these years - worth a watch if can be found -  :D

Instead I saw Paranormal Activity 2 and it was BORING!

How was the first Paranormal Activity?  David, or anyone else who has seen it.

My wife and I were thinking of renting it.

There were some really chilling moments. I had a problem with the pervasive influence of Blair Witch Project (a movie that was a lot better). The ending in particular looked pretty lame compared to the creeping subtlety of Blair Witch.

It seems to be pretty divisive - people either find it boring/funny/both or totally terrifying. Unfortunately I fall into the latter, being of a twitchy disposition and overactive and vivid imagination so any kind of subtle horror really gets to me. But it's what my imagination does with the source material that is most scary afterwards that really gets under my skin.

Honestly, it affected me to the point I was losing sleep and leaving the lamp on for three weeks after seeing it. And I keep my toes under the covers at all times now. My brother is even worse - he still sleeps with the light on and it's been nearly a year.

But that's just my reaction. It's hard for me to be objective about the actual quality of the film because I was so affected by it.

I thought that the first one was really effective at being scary.  But then I forced my mother to watch it when I was visiting and she was bored (and she usually scares easily).  And I came upon a realization (especially since she hated the Blair Witch Project too).  To be scared you need immersion, and for some the whole shot on camcorder does it really well (because it feels realistic) but for some it doesn't work AT ALL.  For my Mother if you're not going to have a compelling story and excellent special effects don't bother.  So she is scared by a movie like Carpenter's The Thing but will never be anything but bored with Paranormal Activity. :)

Your mum has good taste - I really like The Thing but it is hilarious - actually laugh out loud funny.

I wonder if maybe it depends on how your imagination works. If you have a very vivid imagination, a subtle scare film will leave plenty of gaps for you to fill in yourself - and inevitably you will come up with something terrifying because it will be based on your own personal deep-seated fears. For this kind of person an OTT gore-fest doesn't provide any nourishment because all the work is done for them.

And then you'll have people who are sensitive in a different way and will respond more to the gore and visceral shocks. When the 'scare' isn't stated obviously they're like 'what's to be scared of?!', to which the other kind of person will inevitably respond 'EVERYTHING!'  :o :o :o

That is funny how the same movie can be funny or scaring depending on who is watching it.

When I first saw Evil Dead I saw it alone and it scared the crap out of me! :D  But later when I saw it again with a friend it was all laughs.  And when I saw Drag Me to Hell I thought it was hilarious, a friend saw it and thought it was really scary! ;D

I'm a huge fan of the Evil Dead, not so much the sequels, but the original. And the Thing remake is a real classic, way better than the original in my opinion. I only liked the ending of Drag Me To Hell.

Watched the Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978 remake last night, after years without. Great movie and really cool effects, especially for that time period.

I don't know if I've seen that remake Andy.  I've seen the original, the one from the 90s, The Puppet Masters and the Invasion but I haven't seen that one.  Guess I'll add it to my queue. :)

If you can go in with the "this was made in the '70's" mindset, I think you'll really like it.

Puppet Masters was cool. I only saw it when it first came out, so you gave me something for my queue.

I've added it to my instant queue will either watch that or rewatch American Werewolf in London tonight. :)

Since we're talking kickass Sutherland horror movies, check out Don't Look Now, genuinely creepy, disturbing one of the best horror movies I've seen. 8)

When I first saw American Werewolf in London back in the day, I thought it was the scariest movie I'd every seen.  The scariest before that had been Day of the Triffids.

Neither of these seem especially scary to me today; I think it's just the advancement of the SOTA in special effects and directorial creativity.  American Werewolf is rather amusing at times though.

About to finish up the Hurt Locker.

Sci-Fi/Horror B Movie based on a Philip K. Dick story - mostly pretty enjoyable :).
