Once upon a time in Venice

Not the standard Bruce Willis fare and a good performance from him, and also from John Goodman, in an entertaining film.

Indeed,   I purchased "The Jewel in the Crown" and I'm most curious to watch it in the best quality available.I installed MakeMKV so I'm ready. :)

MKVs can be played on your pc by popular free media players like VLC and MPC-HC. LG and Sony BD players play them through the USB port. Some players play some and not others. The best results are with the Sonys and LGs, unless you are an extremist like me and get the Oppo, the Swiss army knife of digital media.

I like to burn a DVD and watch it on television.I have no media box and the format has to be avi or dvd.Should I use DVDrecrypter? If makeMKV makes a MKV file than I have to convert that to make a dvd. (convertXtoDVD)
What I want is a DVD disc region free, what is the easiest way to do that. :)
Is it possible to make a dvd file with makeMKV ?

Just finished this documentary after spreading it out over a two-day period (it's around 2 hrs. in duration):

Let me just say that for anyone with any interest in this composer owes it to themselves to see this film. It may very well be the best composer documentary I've ever seen and really gets to the heart of the composer. One of the most rewarding features of this film is how it takes you through works from the very beginning until the end of the composer's life. Two parts of this film I found particularly interesting were the discussions of the Cello Sonata and Cello Concerto. Two, IMHO, underrated works in Barber's oeuvre. A must see!

You should all just move to Australia, where the vast majority of DVD players are (quietly) multi-region after our courts said it was completely outrageous to use region codes to stop people from using things they had legally purchased from overseas, and said there was nothing wrong with people working out how to deactivate the region coding.

That's how pathetic the system is. After that ruling, most of the companies just stopped applying the region coding as the players were shipping out the factory. Why bother when we can all turn it off again?

Money Monster

George Clooney starring in one of his "Movies with a Message".

Karl Henning

Last night, I watched Burn After Reading.  At last.

In January, I ordered a five-movie Coen Bros blu-ray box.  I wanted Intolerable Cruelty in the library (I mean . . . Wheezy Joe, for gosh sakes);  I did not mind upgrading Lebowski from DVD;  I was particularly curious about Barton FinkA Serious Man was entirely off my radar, and I was intrigued by what I now read about it.

I remembered reactions to Burn After Reading being mixed, and I am sure this is why it was the last of the five I have watched.

I like it a great deal.  A black comedy, at times it plays close to tragedy, close to uncomfortable reality (Enemy of the People in a tailspin); but it is a risk the Coen Bros take, in which I think they manage a brilliant success.  John Malkovich has an entirely bad experience – he has a Very Bad Day in the opening scene, and his life just keeps unravelling from there.  Frances McDormand is determined to raise money for her elective plastic surgeries, and the stage is strewn with the lives destroyed in the course of her attempts.  Geo. Clooney, alas!, is ultimately exposed for the soulless popinjay he is.  The cold, tactical marriages;  the politicking and bumbling at the Agency;  the well-meaning, decent manager of the gym whose efforts to help someone he cares about are repaid horribly;  the wonderfully blurred distinction between whom can I trust, and maybe there's just bad information at the bottom of it all.

Yes:  I like it a great deal, and I think it an entire success.

I'm not moving to Australia but you are right,it is very annoying.
I tried to purchase the DVD set but that was not possible.

Well , I could purchase the same thing on Ebay, fortunately.
I wil ripping the dvd and use a usb stick or burn a dvd.
Region-free players are more costly, you have to pay double the price than the same player that is with a region-code.

It must be possible to make your player region-free,to crack the code so to speak.I have no experience with that.

Philips makes region free players at reasonable prices, as do LG and Panasonic. I linked to the Sony because it's a Blu Ray player, too.

Just popping in to point out that specific manufacturers may have arrangements with various arts organizations, which consumers can take advantage of.

I was delighted to discover that by registering my Sony bluray player, l was eligible for thirty days of free access to all content available at the Berlin Philharmonic's Digital Concert Hall. ( This was a few years ago, so l can't promise that Sony and the BPO still have this arrangement. )

Other manufacturers may have similar arrangements, so it may be worthwhile to investigate a bit before making a purchase.

Cheers,

The Fifth Estate

An interesting film which takes a not too flattering look at Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

I saw Burn After Reading when it was released. I remember enjoying it, but then I'm pretty on board with Cohen Brothers films in general. Brad Pitt is who I most remember.

Pitt's performance in Twelve Monkeys is so wonderful, that in Burn After Reading his part felt to me like a reduced cameo.  Which suits the project, and is really no discredit to the actor;  but is just why Chad left less of an impression on me, I reckon.

Very interesting, thanks.

You're welcome, Karl. I suspect that you'll enjoy the documentary. I'm not sure whether you're a Barber fan, but someone could tell, even if they're not a fan of the composer, that this film was a labor of love as the director does an outstanding job of painting a portrait of the man behind the music. I hope for one on Copland and Ives from the same director, but this is probably just wishful thinking.
