Godzilla vs. Kong

Dumb popcorn fare, for sure. I sort of yearn for guys in rubber suits fighting after this multi-million-dollar spectacle.

Wasn't sure how engaged I was going to feel with this realisation of the horrors of the aftermath of Iraq war as seen through the eyes of an American bomb disposal unit at first, good as the direction/acting was. But by the end I'd become fully involved.

Quite an achievement I think, particularly from director Katheryn Bigelow and Jeremy Renner. The constant tension and sobering proximity to death are handled deftly and intelligently. And the psychological scorch marks on the war-wounded vividly portrayed.
A little taken aback to see brief cameos from Ralph Riennes and Guy Pearce, though perhaps in 2008 that wouldn't have been such a surprise.

Devil's Violinist (2013) - biopic about Niccolò Paganini w/ David Garrett, a German violinist, in the title role; Wiki article HERE, which provides an excellent summary of the film.  The reviews were wildly mixed: 6.1/10, IMDB; 43%, Rotten Tomatoes; 4.3/5*, Amazon - the film was atmospheric & Garrett was good in his role - the problems?  Script, scenes portrayed, emphasis on Paganini's vices, etc. I liked the film and probably would do a 3 1/2*(of 5) rating - recommended?  For those interested, read the links - for us, streaming the film was free w/ Amazon Prime Video.  Dave :)

The Midnight Sky with George Clooney on Netflix. Good sci-fi / disaster movie as long as you can go along with a habitable moon around Jupiter that people just hadn't noticed before.

We just watched Spotlight about the Boston Globe's investigation into widespread child abuse by priests and the cover up by the church. A well made and gripping docudrama showing just how much digging the team had to do to get to the truth.

Excellent film, precisely because it's so sober about a topic when it could have gone down the sensationalist route.

I can't cope with bomb movies, and well-made ones are worse. I keep waiting for the bomb to go off.

I like these little tidbits of history, keeping in mind that facts are given way to film dramatics. For me, The Courier is akin to Bridge of Spies in many ways.

The Art of Self Defense

This is a dark comedy. I found it to be nearly so bad that it was good. It is one of those types of film. It did not really work for me but I am sure that others will enjoy it.

La Dolce Vita, Fellini. Anouk Aimée is so cool in the movie.

Nice, and nice poster!

I plan to see that in the near future, as I am working my way through the Essential Fellini Bluray box:

Since Brian Dennehy died a year ago, I was looking for something that I hadn't seen of his. My cousin really liked F/X when it came out, so I thought I would try them.

A film special effects wizard uses his unique know-how to help fight crime. Dennehy really lights up the first movie, although Australian Bryan Brown from Cocktail fame was never my favorite.

Is the visual quality significantly better than that of dvds? I've been wondering about the box.
Have you watched Satyricon or Casanova? I like them as well.

Sorry, I have not seen them on DVD. I'm pretty new to Fellini.

This is pure Hollywood; essentially white, wealthy and wholesome. I sat through and endured it merely to gain some free time Brownie points.  ::)

Hi Fergus - I know we streamed that film when available a few years ago, but have little recall (movie or age? ) - but the makeup job on the boy was good.  Dave :)

Definitely the best part of it, Dave. I was not overly impressed with the film itself I am afraid.

Saving Private Ryan. More Hollywood than I remembered, but the first 25 minutes or so of the movie are amazingly done.

Gone Baby Gone. Good child abduction thriller with plenty of twists, turns and action. The dialogue was somewhat difficult to follow but just clear enough not to lose the plot.
