An extraordinary and much-garlanded film, though very depressing. Too depressing on the day for this milquetoast (seems to be the word of the moment ..) alas.

As many may know, it covers Hackman's private surveillance expert, who becomes uncomfortably entangled in a case he is working on. The surgical exposition of human dysfunction and despair however, seemed to actually outweigh for me the pleasure in its many virtues. Perhaps freed of the slightly claustrophobic effect of the pandemic my response would have been different.

Nonetheless particularly honourable mentions for Coppola's vision and his incisiveness in realising it, and for Gene Hackman who pulls off the trick of being charismatically uncharismatic (as the character requires) in memorable fashion. Interested that it was apparently Coppola's favourite of his films.

Great movie. Masterpiece!!

This is a powerful performance by Bullock. Her character is jailed for the killing of a police officer. She serves her time and is released but that is only where the real story begins.

Ouch, a new Matrix movie was just premiered, the 4th ...

There's already a Wiki article, I didn't read the described plot there, but wanted to know about the reception of it. It's not getting particularly good reviews, however.

This morning, a feature in USA Today's 'Life' section - I own the UHD Amazon version of the first one - watched the two sequels but no urge to also have either in my collection.  The 4th new Martix is streaming on HBOMax which we get but after reading the plot on the link above, sounds like an extremely convoluted story (probably needs editing and shortening!) - SO, if I get the 'itch' to watch, then will put on the headphones and hopefully HBO will be streaming in UHD to my 4K HDTV?  Dave  8)

I own the first. Somehow I cannot bring myself even to watch any sequel. FWIW, I have been slow regarding the John Wick sequels, too.

I liked the first two in the series a lot, whereas the 3rd got very cartoon-, violence- and kitsch-like. The 4th apparently adds some humour, but doesn't leave out the many self-references, seemingly. Hopefully things are explained on the way. Comforting though, that some main characters were allowed to live on anyway and continue the story :) I'll be watching it some day.

Hi Karl - the first Matrix hit the right nerves for me; as to the John Wick films, I've rented and streamed most of them but had no urge to see them again, although many are being sold by Amazon as 4K versions cheaply!  Just not enticed, although I did buy the 4K UHD streamers of Raiders of the Lost Ark & The Last Crusade to replace my BDs - both looked great!  Dave :)

The music from this oldie provided some of my earliest motivation to become a singer, back when dinosaurs ( and cartoons ) ruled the Earth.
Mit Flügeln, die ich mir errungen...

The review of Matrix 4 that I've seen praised the first section and then said it lost its way a bit. The impression I got was that they still thought it was better than the 2nd and 3rd films. Being better than the 3rd film, in particular, would not be difficult. It's a complete turkey in my view. I literally remember a single shot, because it was the only time my interest was aroused.

West Side Story.

It is so long ago that I saw the original I'm unable to comment how the new Spielberg film compares. At two and a half hours I was slightly concerned my attention-span would be stretched but no worries as time flew by. Thankfully the setting was as the first film 1950's New York, with time and place perfectly caught. The highlight for me - beside Bernstein's music of course - was more dance then song. A very pretty Maria has a fine voice but I didn't think Tony was strong enough although my wife didn't agree with me. I think the violence perhaps a little too graphic for the type of likely audience, only a minor observation. A remake is always fair game for critics but I thoroughly enjoyed West Side Story.
I'd love to see the new one.  There's so much beautiful music, songs and dancing in the original.  Recently (I'm sure due to this new movie), they played the suite from it on my local radio station....ah, bliss!  :)

Glad that you enjoyed it Irons.
