Kieslowski: A Short Film About Love

A young man stalks an older woman. He eventually becomes a voyeur. She ultimately finds him out and confronts him in her more worldly wise and cynical way and rejects him. The outcome of this rejection has very different consequences for both of the parties in different ways. The subject matter is treated very sensitively, even tenderly, by the director.

Kieslowski was a master. It's fascinating to compare this to the shorter version that was episode 6 of his Dekalog, especially the completely different endings.

1954

Slight if entertaining British detective drama of interest to me only because of the "Meet Mr. Callaghan" theme which was released on 78 rpm, recorded by the Harry Grove Trio, a copy of which was in my now deceased parents' collection and which now resides in my record library, a rare memento of childhood and happier times. A very decent print of the movie was recently uploaded to YouTube; HOWEVER all music has been deliberately rendered unlistenable by staggered sound dropouts.  Presumably the music is still under copyright.  In any event the movie in this state cannot be recommended-- even a pivotal nightclub scene. is ruined.

The haunting Harry Grove Trio version:

Not "The Third Man" theme; but still memorable.

A Fall From Grace:

A rookie defence attorney is handed an apparently open and shut case of a woman who has been charged with the murder of her husband and who wants to plead guilty. However, as the procedure continues, it develops that all is not what it seems and that things are not as straightforward as some people may want them to be.

He most certainly was.  :)

Another film that I recently re-watched was Red Planet:

This is a fast paced action based sci-fi film which is rather predictable. It is film making by numbers, however. Interestingly, the subwoofer was particularly active throughout the film.

The Green Knight (2021)
Dev Patel

A dark and strange take on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from King Arthur lore.

The visual style is foremost, and there is an art house sensibility that runs strong throughout as well.

I liked this well enough, but when we watched it back to back with Mission to Mars, we preferred the Brian De Palma / Ennio Morricone red planet tale. Both are far from perfect, though.

A love triangle in the 17th century Amsterdam. Not bad.

La Strada (1954, dir. Federico Fellini) - Despite being a fan of the director, I had never seen this, but Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation came to the rescue (https://www.film-foundation.org/). On the first Monday of the month, the foundation is making a restored film available for 24 hours, free.

I loved it. If nothing else, the Nino Rota score is pure enchantment (and I had heard excerpts from that), but between the screenplay, the acting, and exquisite black-and-white photography, there is much else to savor.

Next up on July 11, Kummatty (1979, dir. Aravindan Govindan), which I have never seen, either.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople:

A troubled teenager who has been moved from foster home to foster home is given one last chance when he is placed with a couple who are basically living in the wilderness. The wife is a warm hearted person and the husband is a tough and rough bushman. Circumstances force the teenager and the husband to abscond and this is the warm story of how the teenager ingratiates himself into the affections of the husband. It is definitely not a sentimental weepy; it is quite amusing and it comes with a strong recommendation.

Just now: Cut Snake

Rather good Australian film (the expression "mad as a cut snake" = someone you definitely want to avoid), though classifying it is rather difficult. Crime thriller / psychological drama / twisted romance...

The central performances are all very convincing, especially Sullivan Stapleton. Charismatic and scary all at once, I genuinely spent large parts of the film not knowing what he might do. Only fractionally spoiled by me being already aware of the slight twist that occurs about halfway through (which will cause you to reevaluate certain bits of what you've seen), and well worth watching.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

In a rental house in Knoxville, TN visiting our son/DIL who live in Carmel, Indiana - a compromise drive for both of us - have been ordering delivery meals and watching movies at night (they have a small Maltese dog so we are limited) - have not seen them in 2 1/2 years!  Previous night the four of us watched the first film below on a large 4K HDTV in the living room; last night Stephen and I went to the basement media room and viewed the second film - outstanding detail and surround sound. Dave :)

Hi Fergus - in the back corner of the media room are game consoles and a dart board, plus a small kitchen and large collection of DVDs/BDs (probably over 300) - upstairs, a full size pool table - of the 5 BRms in the house I have the basement one below.  Quite a rental house!  Dave :)

Lives up to its title. :)

But seriously, it is a sweet little independent film. Tony Hale plays a character that is very different from Buster. The whole thing is simple, slow, almost meditative. Good to chill out with.

A masterpiece. Quite unlike any other biopic.
