Some of the jokes which are obvious in the typical Mel Brooks vein actually carry reasonably well.

Yeah I watched the special features and Mel Brooks was always trying to add easy jokes.  I don't know whose idea it was to have Frankenstein and the Monster sing putting on the ritz but man that is still my favorite scene! :D  That and the one with Gene Hackman, haha that makes me laugh just thinking about it! ;D ;D

If I ever visit with Hackman, I will ladle the soup, thank you very much.

I'm pretty sure Gene Wilder came up with the Puttin' on the Ritz scene, and considered it central to the whole film. When Mel decided to turn YF into a musical, Gene strongly objected, on the grounds that if there was a song and dance in every scene then the startling effect of the tap dance scene would be ruined.  :)

P.S. There are two new shows with Gob and Tobias?!?!?!? Must see these!

Harry

Spartacus, with Kirk Douglas. On Blu-Ray, and somewhat later Ghost, in a sense a very good film.

I watched Top Secret after the good reviews here a few days ago.

It was ok, it got a handful of giggles. I liked the bit (paraphrasing):

"Well you better hope that he survives Mr Rivers!"
*phone rings*
"Yes... ok... yes... well let me know if his condition changes"
"He's dead"

It wasn't as consistently silly as Airplane! or any of the Naked Gun series. Val Kilmer is just no Leslie Nielsen.  :(

Boy I haven't seen that movie in a long time! :D  I can't remember if I posted this or not, but a couple of weeks ago I saw a very funny send off of James Bond called OSS 117. :)

That is my recollection, too.

Feonor I don't think I had ever seen triffids and scariest in the same sentence before! ;D
I'm possibly much older than you.  It was back in the day that I saw it and had that reaction.  ;)

Never saw the movie, though the book was scary in its way.

Overall, I prefer "The Return of the Giant Hogweed"
; )

Tomorrow evening, I've snagged a spot at a private screening of 127 Hours, the upcoming film from director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog) about Aron Ralston, who got his arm caught under a boulder in Utah and amputated it to escape. Danny Boyle, star James Franco, and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy will be in attendance for a Q&A session afterwards. Cool stuff  8)

The first day the two of them got together to work on Wilder's script, Brooks asked the "You don't really mean this, do you?" question. Wilder's passions gradually rose as he argued for the scene, and Brooks said, "It's in. I thought, Either this is brilliant and right, or terrible and wrong. But you were prepared to fight for it, so it must be right."

It's purely dumb luck that one of my classmates in this master's degree program is a successful television director who's coming back to school for a change in course. Even crazier luck that BAFTA sends everyone two tickets and her husband is out of town this week. I'm really looking forward to it.  8)

EDIT: Oh and Aron Ralston, the hiker/amputee who inspired the movie, will be there too.
