The image quality curve is definitely pretty near the apex with HD DVDs, so it's unlikely that they would be as readily replacable by another format later on with as big a difference between it as DVD to Blu-Ray - IMO a good choice for a "reference" copy to own, and keep going back to over the years.

Probably not, since BR was filmed with... film, and Blu-Ray will really only improve on movies recently made with digital recording. I could be wrong, though.

As film is an analog media, it's resolution is hard to define. Different film stocks have different properties. Older movies with special effects use photocopying method that lower resolution significantly. The bottom line is resolution on film is different from digital media. Anyway, generally in order to digitally scan "everything" from film 4K digital media is needed.
