I bought FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS by Hunter S. Thompson on CD. And some other things I'll post later.
Dave, who is reading it, and is he/she a good match for the book? Is there someone you might have preferred? Just curious, since I notice the field of "recorded books" seems to be increasing, and there must be an art to matching up the material with an appropriate narrator.

I just started, but the guy seems pretty fitting for the material. The box is in the vehicle so I have no idea who's reading.

Wow George, seeing those Queen album covers brought back memories for me. Queen were the first band I seriously 'got into' back in '77 when I was 11 years old. I saved my pocket money to buy those very albums. The Game was a couple of years later and wasn't a classic 'Queen' album for me although it was a mega-hit for them in the States. I'm not interested in Queen music anymore [can't stand the sight of Mercurys posing and pouting] but I still appreciate their contribution to interesting melodic rock music and retain a soft spot for their first six albums and the warm memories they invoke. :)

Maybe a dumb question, but wouldn't it be better to wait for the inevitable high-definition re-releases of popular films like Blade Runner? The image quality curve is definitely pretty near the apex with HD DVDs, so it's unlikely that they would be as readily replacable by another format later on with as big a difference between it as DVD to Blu-Ray - IMO a good choice for a "reference" copy to own, and keep going back to over the years.
Probably not, since BR was filmed with... film, and Blu-Ray will really only improve on movies recently made with digital recording. I could be wrong, though.Film has much better resolution than HD in fact.

Sweet!
It's bloody confusing buying stuff by him ;D Hard to put faith into every publisher to include the right stuff in their "almost complete" collections... I picked these on the basis that they are apparently using a more up to date edition of the works than many other books, so I guess that made it simple to choose these volumes. I was almost tempted by the following one, though. 1000 page hardbacks look great on bookshelves :P

Yeah. There are many ways to purchase Lovecraft. I have the Dell trades currently. If you like Lovecraft, Thomas Ligotti may also be to your liking.
Danke :) I decided to get into him because he was apparently inspired by Lord Dunsany's style, which I like a lot.
Hm. Maybe you should have started with one book. ;)

The Lovecrafts arrived. Very annoying - the last two volumes have normal laminated paperback covers, but the first has a non laminated almost paper-thin one. Unexpected given the publisher and how recent it is - this cover will get damaged in no time :-\ :'(

Good for you! I have returned recently to Shakespeare as well. That complete set looks nice. I have Viking's "Portable Shakespeare" which I bought thinking it was complete, only to find that only 7 plays are complete, with "bleeding chunks" from other plays ;D. I think Buscema's my favorite.
He is great. I love Gene Colan's work from his classic "Tomb of Dracula" years. Also John Byrne from the old "X-Men".
Still, Barry Smith's work on the Avengers may be unmatched IMO.....unless you play the Neal Adams Batman card. ;D
Hey, I never checked him out! Now I'm curious...
He only did a few Ange. However, I would never dis' Busema. He did some great stuff as well. And for the record, my all-time favorite comic book cover on the planet:

Samuel Butler - Erewhon and Erewhon Revisited (Modern Library)
I haven't yet finished The Way of All Flesh, but I am enjoying it so much that I ordered this, what is usually referred to as his masterpiece. Apparently it was a huge influence on Huxley for Brave New World (a book I need to revisit soon).
Interestingly enough, Erewhon is also the name of a cereal maker. ;D

Reprise CD with no RE in Matrix
What does that mean? ???
There have been many masterings of the Jimi Hendrix albums. The Reprise were the very first CD pressings made in the US. After about two years, the company did a silent remaster and changed the matrix number to include RE-1. (The matrix number is the number printed in a circular pattern near the center of the CD, usually you need to flip the CD over to be able to read the numbers.) These silent remasters can only be identified in this way. Unfortunately, the remastering removes some of the music (not to mention some of the "life" of performance) along with the Noise Reduction. Reprise, like EMI and many other labels, perhaps just thought that they were doing the customer a favor by removing the hiss, but we know today that you can't remove the hiss without removing some of the music.
Since the original Reprise discs were only out for a few years, they are pretty rare. They used the master tape to master it apparently. The newest EH mastering (the one in stores) is the same source, but suffers from that loud compression we have discussed before.
You have become quite the audiophile.

Let's hope not, but I just want to be on the safe side.
I just read somewhere Sharpies are okay. Solvent vs. Non-solvent, blah blah blah.
I also read that slowly over the years, CDRs lose their data until eventually you're listening to silence! Oy, how to backup all these downloads? They said factory CDs slowly lose data as well...
Yeah, I just read somewhere that Elvis is alive and pregnant with Jimi Hendrix's baby. ;D

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51yvjDrzO-L._SL500_AA240_.jpg)Well, the Marx brothers certainly crafted better theatrical works, and their understanding of human nature was much more profound, but their movies tend to be so full of frenetic action and non-stop one-liners that they're not nearly such effective sleep aids.

It wasn't until I was in my 30s that I read The House of the Seven Gables; and although in different ways to (say) Melville or Dostoyevsky, I wouldn't have gotten nearly so much out of Hawthorne, if I had read more of his work while I was back in high school.

Let me know about this one when you can buddy.
I listened to it today and I LOVE it! Gritty, cool sound and I like the mono mixes for the most part. I figured out today that there are 6 songs that are on the Singles Collection that are not on any other 2002 remaster by the Stones, plus 18 mixes that only appear on the Singles Collection. I burned all of these onto a CD and listened to it today on the way to and from work. Thanks for the recommendation.
Unfortunately, my copy is damaged (the jewel case didn't hold on 2 of the CDs), I went to the store, but the one I got is OOP (yes, I got the digipac one, they exist for this title 8)) I asked the Mgr to order another, but knew it was a lost cause. He told me that if they couldn't get me one, they would refund my money. I got ABKCO's number from another forum and called them today to explain the situation and try to get another case. They called back in a half an hour and told me they had one. I asked to pick it up at their office (not too far from my work) and they said OK. Within two hours I had a brand new copy with a perfect case (and the 3 CDs, too.) So now I can return my original defective one (cost me $65 with tax) and keep my replacement for free. 8)
WOW! Glad that worked out. Keep your eyes out for a decent used one for me buddy. Any release for under $30 is fine. ;D

Have you ever compared first pressing CDs to their remastered counterparts?
Count me a geek. Mid 90's remasters seem to be reasonably safe. Nowadays it's just loud.
Better late than never I guess:
Why I didn't buy it way back then I do not know.
Never directly, that is, I've never owned a first-pressing CD and a remaster at the same time.
And the only instance where I have (at two different times) owned both a first-pressing CD and its corresponding remaster was Duke. I ditched the first pressing almost immediately, as there were guitar lines which were near nonexistent; and the subsequent remaster is brilliant 0:)
That's the new Beck right? How is it working out George?

Slowdive: Just for a Day [album].
I got this for the bonus disc of their first EPs, which I originally had on vinyl back in the day (along with Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Pixies - those were the days). The album proper isn't as good. Apparently the follow-up Souvlaki is better, but I haven't heard it.
Though, I think Lush is probably the best of that bunch — I've been listening to Split and really surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. Most of the bands I listened to before I started listening almost exclusively to classical music haven't fared nearly as well.

Had this more than once in my life, this is the first time I've hard it on cd. The sound is great, the songs Immortal.
I recently got into Manowar after a lot of trying. For some reason the studio albums all turned me off them, but a recent live album made the songs sound so much better, especially the ones from the newest album (which sounded awful in the studio version). I am surprised that the old guys can still sing/play so well.
I thought that their latest studio album, Gods of War, was a milestone in the history of Rock and Metal. But then, I'm old and have been listening to them for 25 years (laughing).

George I see you have dived into some Wagner. You don't pussyfoot around - no one or two discs of overtures and preludes (like I've got), straight into four discs of Lohengrin :)
;DCool, I have been considering expanding my Wagner into complete operas too, and will be interested to hear what you think. I thought Lohengrin might be a good place to start, since it's four discs and not 14 ;D
Yes, those who know me know that when I get into something, I get into something.
I now own 5 masterings of Queen's News of the World. 8)

Yes, the $12 price tag and glowing reviews from friends and critics made the decision easy.Man I love my 2-disc set of Wagner overtures and preludes. If you're unfamiliar with the material, you're in for a real treat.

;) Lohengrin is a grat place to start. It's alot easier to get into than the operas after, and not anywhere near as derivative of Italian as the ones before. I started with the Ring, but it took me months before it finally clicked. The rest is history...just check my signature.
Which one did you get? Solti?Yeah I probably should have raised this in the Classical Purchases thread. Oh well. Mine is on DG and includes Messrs Jochum, HvK, Bohm und Kubelik: http://www.amazon.com/Wagner-Overtures-Preludes/dp/B000001GLB/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1235008665&sr=1-3 (http://www.amazon.com/Wagner-Overtures-Preludes/dp/B000001GLB/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1235008665&sr=1-3)

It's difficult for me to say how good it is objectively, since I've heard little other Wagner, but subjectively it's great. I did also have a 3-disc set on Brilliant Classics (now apparently OOP) featuring The Philharmonia with Simonov and D'Avalos, but I liked the DG performances better. The Brilliant did have Overtures from Die Feen and Das Liebesverbot though, which I liked a lot, and are not on the DG set.
I thought that looked interesting. Haven't heard it yet. The Kubelik Siegfried looks like it might be very interesting His Parsifal is cream of the studio crop, in my opinion. Also Jochum doing Parsifal...that looks good!
Deep Purple - Made in Japan
I've worn out my vinyl and cassette of that Classic, so I need to grab the cd SOON. Which one are you getting, Dave? Gold or black cover? I've heard the gold has better sound, the black a really cool booklet.
Downloaded from iTunes. Black cover image.
Never owned it before now.
I knew you'd see this. ;D
Hey, please let me know how good the sound is. I'm mostly concerned with the BIG BASSY CRUNCH-slash-"Everything LOUDER Than Everything Else"-slash-We Can Really Hear Blackmore wail on "Child in Time" type o' sound.
I'm sure someone will come along who can tell you more about the sound quality than I can. ;D
I feel like a retard, I've never owned this on disc, and it's one of my favorites (did you guess?).
Let's see...Who is the guitarist??? ;)

Steve Hoffman mastered this one for DCC. 8)Yes he did, and although I've never heard that one, I can tell you the old gold cover Made in Japan CD sounds much better than the remaster. The Deep Purple remasters are pretty awful.

Can you say what you think of it in the film thread when you watch some? I've been moderately interested, but holding out. Apparently it has been very hyped in the US on each series release?

Excellent stuff, Karl. Is this cd included?

I guess it's literate. It's damn good anyway. Loads of fun. And, right now, 60% off at Amazon!Keep going. The character development and sociopolitical implications of the plot kept it interesting through the first 3 seasons. The first part of the fourth was a bit of a let down for me, but I'm still looking forward to the final half season.

Borrowed this from Netflix and was so hooked I decided I had to have it. Not quite on the level of Planet Earth, but for an avid birdwatcher like myself an absolute must. Just amazing footage.
Sphere (Hoffman, Stone, Jackson)
Too long, and some of the settings look pretty lame, but the story can be pretty darn interesting.
Based on the novel by Michael Crichton.
I thought the book was better.
Usually the case.
Neither grabbed me. I know Crichton. was very popular, but I did not care for any books I started, including Sphere. Now, this is not to say I snub "popular" authors. In fact, Dan Brown owns me. ;D
Ever read Jurassic Park? Gets pretty darn cool at times!
Mancini Plays Mancini(Reader's Digest/RCA vinyl-still sealed!)
Love that Mancini sound. When I saw R.E.M. in 1984 they encored with "Moon River" acapella on a dark stage.
Very cool, MN!
Yes, sir. The man is interesting, that's for damn sure. 8)

I really love the No Direction Home DVD, before seeing that on PBS a few years back, I did not own one Dylan album. Now I have them all.
I read his Chronicles and became a fanatic soon thereafter. That No Direction movie didn't hurt either. ;)

When it comes to artists that I love, I don't dabble. :)
How many albums is that? Like 100?
;D
It's less than the Rolling Stones, another group that I had zero albums by until recently and now have every one.
Dylan in toto is a staggering volume to contemplate.
I don't have to worry about the Rolling Stones.
Have you listened to all those Dylan albums? Even the bootleg series? Wow.
Don't like them?

Even cooler. Brand name please, David.Store bought, not boutique. Lindt extra-dark. I hid them all over the house in places where I figured she would inadvertently find them. Better than a dozen sessions with the marriage counselor.

Plus Dave, I believe if my rocket does not work I am out about $30. For your Delta II (?) with its DS1 payload: from the web $152.3 million comprised of $94.8 million for development, $43.5 million for launch, $10.3 million for operations, and $3.7 million for science. That would be a lot of cds you would be missing out on. ;D
What a cool hobby rocketry must be. Trouble is I'd always be striving to end up with this in the backyard:
The Saturn V is easily my favorite rocket, Russell, for a number of reasons, but truly took the first spot when I was able to view like this when we visited Cape Kennedy last summer:
The Belles Heures of Jean, Duke de Berry, Prince of France
A book of gorgeous reproductions of the illuminated Book of Hours from the 1400s. I can't find any photos from this edition, but the colors are amazingly vivid (they even have gold foil to simulate the gilded scripts).

Can you link me to this edition, Corey.....and quickly. :)
Do you mind me asking where you got it and how many bones it set you back?
Some movies:
Hamlet (1996; Kenneth Branagh)
Henry V (1989; Kenneth Branagh)
Doubt (2008; not Kenneth Branagh)
Still need to see all three, Brian. In my Shakespeare class we've seen clips from the Branagh Hamlet back-to-back with excerpts from the Mel Gibson Hamlet, and the difference is eye-opening, sometimes even jaw-dropping. The Gibson Hamlet is good. It delivers when it needs to, the soliloquys are mighty fine, Gibson adds some clever touches and is supported by a great cast, and the play is cut down to a manageable size. But the difference between Gibson (well, actually, I should say Zeffirelli - Franco directed Mel) and Branagh is the difference between a pretty good movie and a great movie. It's the difference between something you enjoy of an evening and something you never forget. When I watch the Zeffirelli Hamlet I'm aware that it's highly competently executed; when I watch the Branagh one every second is absolutely electric, the kind of filmmaking that dazzles with its imagination and invention and glorious acting (Jacobi as Claudius!) - but keeps me so busy being enveloped in the story that I hardly notice I'm watching a movie. I'm really, really looking forward to getting that copy.
I've mentioned it before, but Grigory Kozintsev's Hamlet is my favorite film adaptation of Shakespeare (and one of the best-looking films ever made, to boot). Not to mention one of the best soundtracks! ;)
Nice Bu!
I have the other three Bergman boxes (The Early Bergman, etc) and this is my favorite.
Thanks, George! Can't wait to dig into the movies here; have only seen Through a Glass, Darkly but that was about 10 years ago and my memory is pretty dim about it. Was thinking of getting the Early Bergman set, but didn't know if any of those films would be as good as his later ones. Are they?
They aren't as good, but they are good nonetheless.
Should still be an interesting viewing, then. With the 40% discount I might as well give them a shot.
There's always that "4 masterpieces boxes" set too or the one with "Anna/Shame/Persona, etc" too.
If individual DVDs are on sale too, I'd grab Autumn Sonata and Scenes from a Marriage ahead of any of those boxes if I were you.
Oh, all the cds and dvds are at 40% clearance, George. Have been buying lots and lots of everything I can think of! :D
Saw Scenes there & was planning on buying that next time. Didn't see Autumn Sonata, but have already watched that one recently thanks to a friend and enjoyed it immensly. Hmm.....that 4 masterpieces sounds enticing, but I probably already have some of the dvds in that package.
The 4 movies are Virgin Spring, Wild Strawberries, Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night.
Already have two of those films (Wild Strawberries & Seventh Seal). :(
I think I'll just focus on the early set with Scenes from a Marriage. ;)
Scenes from a Marriage is long, but man is it incredible.
Yeah, there's two versions, I hear: the shorter theatrical cut and then the version for Swedish tv. Both are on the Criterion dvds, right?
Regardless, I look foward to seeing at least one! ;D
The Criterion DVD I have includes both versions. 8)
Threw done 30 bones for this piece of vinyl today, and am still smiling. ;)

Got my attention here, Dave.
Quality sword-and-planet stuff, dude. 8) She also worked on the script for The Empire Strikes Back.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leigh_Brackett
I thought this was worth copying and bringing over:
The Empire Strikes Back
Brackett worked on the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back. The movie won the Hugo Award in 1981. This script was a departure for Brackett, since until then, all of her science fiction had been in the form of novels and short stories.
The exact role which Brackett played in writing the script for Empire is the subject of some dispute. What is agreed on by all is that George Lucas asked Brackett to write the screenplay based on his story outline. It is also known that Brackett wrote a finished first draft which was delivered to Lucas shortly before Brackett's death from cancer on March 18, 1978. The screenplay was revised for filming by Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan, and both Brackett and Kasdan (though not Lucas) were given credit for the final script.
Many reviewers believed that they could detect traces of Brackett's influence in both the dialogue and the treatment of the space opera genre in Empire.[3] However, Laurent Bouzereau, in his book Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays, states that Lucas disliked the direction of Brackett's screenplay and discarded it. He then produced two screenplays before turning the results over to Kasdan, who did not work directly with Brackett's script at all. By this scenario, Lucas' assignment of credit to Brackett was a mere courtesy or mark of respect for the work she had done during her illness.[4] Support for this view comes from Stephen Haffner, owner of the press that printed Martian Quest: The Early Brackett, who has read Brackett's script, and claims that -- outside Lucas' storyline -- nothing of Brackett's personal contributions survives in the finished movie.
Brackett's screenplay has never been published. According to Haffner, it can be read at the library of the Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico, but may not be copied or borrowed off-site.
Most interesting. Considering the none-too-high opinion I have of Lucas as a writer, I imagine that the probability that Brackett's screenplay was reasonably good, worked in its disfavor 8)

I was never a big Star Wars fan but must admit Empire was my favorite.
Not exactly a purchase, but I just downloaded and installed the very fast Safari 4.0 browser. I read in a test that it was 2X as fast as Firefox. They were wrong. It's more like 5 times faster, at least on my computer. I found an easy way to import all my thousands of bookmarks too:
1. Export bookmarks to HMTL from FF.
2. In menu bar on Safari, click File>Import Bookmarks.
3. Browse to your bookmarks.html file and click Open.
Note: same process on Windows and Mac, except in Windows version you need to be sure the Menu Bar is enabled. Click little gear icon on right hand side next to the bug report button, and click on "Show Menu Bar."
____________
Man I am lovin' this Safari 4.0 my Firefox had gotten sluggish even with modifications, so this is good news!

Not bought, but received recently as a gift (and I would have bought it if I hadn't been given it). I guess this is Bob's version of 'easy listening', which perhaps is why it's sold so well? He can do this sort of bluesy stuff in his sleep; there's nothing here to challenge, nothing here that's likely to live in the mind for years - no 'Mississippi'; no 'High Water'. But who cares; he's still here, still doing it, and that's something to celebrate.
He's become an old bluesman. Which is neat.

I found a neat secondhand bookstore today in a village I previously hadn't heard of. Cramped but with an entire room for art and architecture. I got:
(http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/8718/turnrhc.jpg) (Turner's Rivers, Harbours and Coasts)
I can't think of another "establishment approved" figure (pre-20th c) who continued their artistic evolution to such un-crowd-pleasing lengths, but because people admired him, the radical works appear to have gained appreciation rather rapidly. I could be a bit wrong in this impression, though, as I have yet to read a biography on him, only style analysis. Rain, Steam, and Speed as far as I am concerned might be the greatest painting a Briton has produced, although this "maybe" depends on seeing it in real life first. Its colours vary greatly depending on photograph/scan, and completely alter its mood.
I forgot about my other bag, which contained an old and cheap Constable bio (a chap whose work I have yet to fully appreciate - too chocolate box at its most famous, but almost Turneresque - albeit early/middle Turner - at its best)
and an ungodly amount of 10-50p pamphlets on various buildings. Sometimes I feel that I am the only person under the age of 60 who cares about fan vaulting in obscure parish churches serving villages with names like "Ottery"... ::)
Ivo Andric - Bosnian Chronicle
Interesting choice, how did you come to it? I like that book, captures the atmosphere of inert stillness of Ottoman backwater perfectly, sticky atmosphere thwarting any desire for action of any sort. I prefer it to better known Bridge on Drina. Another Andric favorite is short novella The Damned Yard.
There doesn't seem to be much of his writing available in English
King Crimson - Beat

I had a Horace Walpole phase some years ago and enjoyed the wit of his letters enormously. Castle of Otranto is great fun as long as it's not approached as 'great literature', but in the 'spooky entertainment' spirit in which, I suppose, Walpole expected it to be enjoyed. It's a great way of enjoying the spirit of its age. I picked up a slim eighteenth century copy in a secondhand bookshop, in its original dark, plain, time-charactered leather binding, and the impression of the letterpress tangible when you run a finger over the pages.
Yes, my approach will be what you mentioned. I'm going through a 'classic Gothic fiction' phase at the moment and this is considered the grandfather of the genre. I loved the description of the aged copy you found... :)

Man I haven't read Dean Koontz in a long time! Tell me if it's any good. :)
Hardcover of Koontz's Darkfall for $1.50. Not sure if I've read this one.
Also, WTF at the people reviewing the play itself [i.e., The Merchant of Venice] in the Amazon reviews. But whatever, they make some amusing reading.
As if Shakespeare needs to be reviewed at this late date 8)
I would not give The Merchant for a wilderness of Spidermen.
The Merchant of Venice is 2 star material, apparently. Like Spiderman 2...

I didn't buy A Glastonbury Romance because I felt that any book of 1100 small-print pages which cannot prove it has a real plot in the blurb I will never manage to finish.
Glad you scored some loot today, Bill! :D
I also scored a still sealed set of Moravec Beethoven albums....needles to say, that seal will soon be broken.
Which works are on there?
Will let you know when I break the seal.
The new Hall and Oates box set. The one with that long title.
Rammstein - Liebe ist für alle da
Of course I bought the special edition. It has e.g. "Halt" and "Donaukinder". Donaukinder is a gorgeous song.
Many fans, including me, thought, Rammstein would be close to be dead. Many fans cherish the album "Mutter", but not the latest ones, "Reise, Reise" and the latest "Rosenrot".
But now "Liebe ist für alle da". Rammstein are back. It's the stuff fans starved for! I love it. There's pretty much of a hype around this album, 175 (http://www.amazon.de/product-reviews/B002P3J3JO/ref=sr_1_1_cm_cr_acr_img?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1) reviews on amazon.de, most of which are very positive!

Tangerine Dream - Dream Mixes IV
used to love Tangerine Dream from years back with albums like Force Majeure and Rubycon- just wondered if their latest stuff is as good ???Force Majeure is one of their best albums. Rubycon is strong too. Many fans think the 90's was a weak (personally I think it wasn't that weak, only different) decade for TD but there is also a consensus that the last 5 years have been a renaissance for Tangerine Dream.

Recommended recent releases: Jeanne d'Arc (2005), Mapcap's Flaming Duty (2007), Purple Diluvial (2008) Views From The Red Train (2008) and Chandra (2009). Also, the Booster Compilations are very good.

Just pulled the trigger on a brace of releases which, when I first saw one of them (or, one version of one of them) maybe a year-ish ago, I was sure I had no interest in. It's the insidious influence of watching certain DVDs . . . they push me down the spiral . . . .

I found this in a second-hand bookshop for £5 and thought "bargain", then when I presented it to the owner, he made a BS excuse about the pencil-written price looking to have been "tampered with" after appearing surprised at how low he (or whoever else did it) had priced it. He's an ass because he should've had the guts he would say to my face "sorry I priced this too low", but he didn't - he instead implied that I was a thief, because nobody else would forge a price then leave it without trying to purchase. I am socially awkward enough as it is without people like that messing with me :P
When I got home I looked it up on Amazon and found it a copy for 6p, which I promptly snapped up. There is his answer: he must've Googled the book when pricing, saw how low it was and marked it similarly. Whatever, it's his loss of custom and my saving. Sadly, the Amazon price has gone up since (another entry has it for £3.50) so I can't recommend it as a must-buy, despite being a very fine book. The images are well-chosen and brightly reproduced, and the kitsch is balanced by more substantial stuff - really enjoyable and I can't wait to look through it again during the summer.
You've found a new place to dwell, on Ives Street, I see . . . .
That's a great bargain you've got there. It has a fine, balanced cross-section of work, very well reproduced, and much of it not all that readily available elsewhere. Even what might be dismissed as kitsch acquires an interest in its context, and there's plenty of the real stuff in any case - the pastoral idylls of John Linnell are worth anyone's attention, for instance: visions hard won in maturity, after a youth spent in painting hard-edge Pre-Raphaelite landscapes 20 years before the Pre-Raphaelites thought of doing it! Nicely spotted, and congrats on spending 6p with such terrific wisdom!
:)! Now I just need some sun... ::)
Just got a new iPod: 160 GB Classic which I am well chuffed with! - now I can store all my CM with room for future purchases and have now been able to include lossless versions of my favourite music :):

That's the one I have (altho mine is silver) and been very happy with it for over a year with no problems - but how do you sync lossless tracks?I ripped the Lossless tracks into iTunes using Apple Lossless and then sync'ed them to my iPod - I have the manage music manually option selected so my iPod doesnt try to update itself every time I connect it to the computer.
I like my Sansa Fuze, but that is certainly a temptation . . . .Those Sansa MP3 players look awesome! - I like the way you can use the SD card to expand its memory, certainly a nice player from what I have read :).

Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51g2VjPnaWL._SS500_.jpg)
....and speaking of Simon. S&G is one of the few that I would not mind having everything they made on vinyl and cd, David.
Is that a birthday hint? ;D
(I know it's coming up, right?)
Oh, and did I mention I want all their vinyl in the stereo format, and where possible in mono. 8)
Knew you would. :D
Case in point of mono S&G, though an extreme example:

Getting the bassy phones ordered--
Klipsch S4 for chores, exercise and around the house
(http://www.bestearbuds.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/klipsch-noise-isolating-earbuds.jpg)
Can you tellme more about those? Ever since Sennehesier discontinued the MX500s, I have been in search of a replacement.
Details: Klipsch’s latest mid-range model that has received overwhelmingly positive reviews both here at head-fi and in the mainstream press
Current Price: $79.99 from Amazon.com (MSRP: $79.99); $99.99 for S4i with microphone
Specs: Driver: Dynamic | Imp: 18 Ω | Sens: 110 dB | Freq: 10-19k Hz | Cable: 4.2’ I-plug (S4i); 4.2’ L-plug (S4)
Nozzle Size: 3mm | Preferred tips: Stock Single-flanges
Wear Style: Over-the-ear or straight down
Accessories (3.5/5) – Silicone single-flange (3 sizes) and bi-flange tips, and metal carrying case (S4i instead includes a velvet carrying pouch and shirt clip)
Build Quality (4/5) – Housings are plastic but seem plenty sturdy and have articulated strain reliefs. Cable is a little thin for my liking but very flexible and doesn’t tangle much
Isolation (3.5/5) – Block out an above-average amount of external noise
Microphonics (4.5/5) – Nonexistent when worn over-the-ear. Noticeable but not too bad otherwise. Included shirt clip helps further
Comfort (4/5) – Easier to insert when worn cord-down. When worn over-the-ear fit is very similar to the JVC HA-FX300
Sound (7/10) – Coming from the RE0 these seem colored and very heavy at the low end, lacking in clarity and behind slightly in detail as well. After some solitary time with the S4, I think that they are interesting earphones that deliver heavy bass impact, strong mids, and decent treble. The bass can be too powerful and boomy for my liking, but that’s more of a personal issue - at least they don’t give me bass headaches. It’s not quite as tight as I would like, but can’t be called bloated either. I can see why this bass has mass appeal – it can easily satisfy the bass junkie without offending the audiophile. There is a very small amount bleed into the midrange, which is smooth and articulate, if a little off-neutral (leaning towards warmth). The treble that the S4s put out is the weak point for me – it lacks the sparkle and smoothness of the RE0 and (even after 200 hours) still sounds somewhat harsh and sibilant. Soundstaging is quite respectable but individual instruments can sometimes be harder to pick out than I would like.
On a final note, I had a small issue with the relatively low impedance and high sensitivity of these - they have a tendency to hiss slightly even with normally dead-silent Sansa Fuze, and the hiss with a crappy lineout like the one on my integrated speaker amp is downright unbearable. They are also fairly revealing of a poor source and recordings so I wouldn’t bother using them with an AM radio or that 96kbps webcast.
Value (7/10) – With a sound signature that can be appreciated by bass junkie, audiophile, and casual listener alike – and practicality to match – the S4s don’t lack in any area. However, as is often with FOTM earphones, the hype is excessive. For me, in terms of sound, the S4 lack the “wow” factor of the RE0, Phonak PFEs, and many others. That said, I still consider these good value for money despite the several issues I have with their sound.
Pros: Competent build, fit, and finish
Cons: Cables don’t inspire confidence, can be too bass heavy for some, hint of harshness/sibilance, prone to hissing
Cnet and Headroom both praised them and put them on the top phones list. One of the few sub-$100 ones to make not just one list, but I think the only one to make both. The bottomline seems to be that it's bassy, and a tad bit trebly with slightly recessed mids, i.e. V shaped frequency response (check out headroom's graph btw). It's been praised by many more people than not on head-fi, and here is what Joker, a reputable head-fier, has said speaking more moderately of it (he did a broad, well written survey of a huge # of iems and portable cans and click on the link to see his whole survey)
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/multi-iem-review-54-iems-compared-visang-r03-added-03-28-a-478568 (http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/multi-iem-review-54-iems-compared-visang-r03-added-03-28-a-478568)
I don't like sibilance, but that's pretty much the sound signature I was looking for, for classical there are others out there, I wanted bass slam for rock. ;D
Thanks David! I am looking for something closer to nuetral.

Original Album series
Great buy at Amazon sellers for these new 5 CD sets many at $15-20 or less.......the savings on shipping individual Cds pays for the boxset, CDs are almost free!
Many groups released in last 6 months, don't have any myself since I own most Cds already but comes in box with cardboard sleeves for each album, amazing price savings for someone new to this music :)
Nice deal, though a little more Cars than I should need.

I decided I had enough of the fake stereo sound of albums up to Abbey Road...........answer Mono Box!
Nice move! How much did you get it for?
Amazon seller USA new boxset........$150
There are even cheaper new boxsets but lower feedback scores raise questions
Some of those stereo seperations are very extreme in later albums, always thought it would sound more cohesive in mono
Be careful, I hear there are some bootlegs about in that price range and being sold on amazon. Is it a reputable seller?
Revolver, Pepper and the White Album all sound great in mono.
You also get the superior (IMO) 1965 stereo mixes of Rubber Soul and Help!
Seller rated 100% and product description said it is legit unopened USA boxset ;)
I saw that those two albums have both mono & stereo versions of album on CD
Amazon seller USA new boxset........$150 ($299 retail)

Since I did the Beatles Mono box could not neglect Mick and the boys...........

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51QZA08SRAL._SL500_AA300_.jpg) 11 Cds each with original artwork
This was bought purely for the artwork and packaging.......not very practical playing 2-3 songs at a time
Price was not bad at Amazon USA, $35 per boxset
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/516-A6thfEL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)
I decided I had enough of the fake stereo sound of albums up to Abbey Road...........answer Mono Box!
This turned out even better than I had expected.......if I had to choose now I take the mono box over stereo box, everything sound less processed and more natural
The packaging is really stellar, each outer cardboard sleeve is album replica including 2 panel fold out if album was issued that way. Also includes original artwork of inside vinyl paper protector sleeve and each CD comes in clear plastic protector sleeve.......impressive attention to detail
Mirror Image, those are all first rate.
I have two of those three Mingus recordings (as well as many others) and they represent some of the best of jazz, IMO. Mingus was an exceptional musician and composer and while he is not what I'd call under-rated, I can't help but feel that many people who are jazz fans don't always have his stuff on their shelves.
I have a bunch of CDs by Bill Frisell, although that one is new to me - his approach is very creative and always interesting. I kind of think of him as a modern day John Fahey, but coming from a jazz place instead of a folk-blues background.
Happy listening!
I wouldn't say that Mingus is an absolute favorite jazz musicians of mine. My favorite Mingus recording is The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, which brought all of best elements of Mingus' style and influences together in a really cohesive way. This recording remains the pinnacle of Mingus' recorded output in my opinion.
Jazz remains very important to me. I was listening to it way before I started listening to classical. My three favorite jazz musicians are Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, and Bill Evans. I could listen to their music all day long and never tire of it. For many years, I listened to a lot of jazz piano trios: Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Sonny Clark, Barry Harris, Hampton Hawes, Bud Powell, Red Garland, etc. and I realized this was favorite jazz format. I love horns don't get me wrong, but the piano trios are just more intimate for me and there seems to be more of a unity in jazz trios that you don't always get in a larger group.
Good to see another jazz fan here! :D
We share many of the same tastes, I am also a huge fan of those piano trios, especially Hampton Hawes whose All Night Sessions I had as LPs and now on CD - great great great. Ditto Bill Evans. Of course, I got to him through Kind of Blue, but also his early great trio work (e.g. Live at the Vanguard) featured Scott Lafaro on bass, and, as a bassist, that was revolutionary for me. (I worked for a time as a bassist in jazz groups in Dallas and New York.)
Those Red Garland leader recordings, are down the middle classic '50s jazz - I love them. I had the honor of playing a few songs with him when he sat in one New Year's night in Dallas, his home. He was still playing some back then (this was the early '80s), but was very much in semi-retirement.
So, yeh, it's great to talk jazz on GMG there are more than a few fans here.

Inspired by Wallander, I bought this:
Ah, man! We watched the first two episodes and are awaiting the last episode.....great stuff....stark, but great. Did you follow the Inspector Lewis series prior to this one on Mystery, David?
Only caught the last episode Bill. :) Didn't have PBS before. ;D The episode I saw was better than the series 1 episodes I've seen.
We are also looking forward to the Sherlock series that follows.

Did you see Happiness or Welcome to the Dollhouse? Those are both superb films, IMO. I have ordered the DVD for Solondz's newest film, Life During Wartime, which should arrive tomorrow. I am very excited!!No I have'nt seen those ones either! :-[ - I have gotten behind in my Movie watching as I have been listening to so much music in my free time, I will make a point of seeing these ones too :).
No I have'nt seen those ones either! :-[ - I have gotten behind in my Movie watching as I have been listening to so much music in my free time, I will make a point of seeing these ones too :).
His movies are what he describes as Sad Comedies. ;D I think that's an accurate description, but they are always controversial as well, dealing with taboo topics, often in a darkly comedic way. People tend to love or hate his films. I absolutely love them. I suggest starting with Welcome to the Dollhouse and if you like it, then checking out Happiness and Storytelling. These last two push the envelope further than Dollhouse does.Sounds cool - I have a nearby video store which specializes in cult movies and will see if it has any of these :).
Ken Curtis is actually a great singer! :) Coolness. ;D
He actually started his career as a singer. :)
Haha Bonanza xmas albums! :D I didn't even know they sang. ;D
They don't. ;) Greene is not that bad. (Did you know that he is the father of Sam Rami's wife?) Actua;;y listening to Ken Curtis album now....he is actually pretty good. The "Festus" talk between songs actually is what does not work here.

I recently picked up the Brothers & Sisters, Blue Room and Safety EPs. Haven't heard them yet, though. I love the first two Coldplay albums.Cool, may have to get those first 2 albums at some stage :).

Coltrane Live At Birdland (http://www.amazon.com/Live-Birdland-Dig-John-Coltrane/dp/B0018RWD68/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1289923903&sr=8-2)
I have most of Tranes discography, he was a phenomenal improvisor ... this purchase is merely a replacement of a damaged disc and it's a classic album (particuarly love the track Alabama). Blue Train is nowhere near my favorite, he was only getting started and the classic quartet (one of the greatest bands in history) hadn't fallen into place yet ... nor are any of the other discs you mentioned, though they do have their moments. My favorite album is First Meditations (for Quartet), but I'm also really fond of Afro-Blue Impressions, Transition, Live At the Half Note, Monk with Trane & Stellar Regions.
If I had to pick a favorite Coltrane recording it would be Blue Train. I find that when he started to get away from his roots (i. e. bebop), his music started to have a very chaotic feel which didn't do much for me. Some people say he was "reaching for the cosmos" or something vague like that, but I hear somebody who was struggling to find his own musical voice when he already had his sound as far back as when he was playing with Miles. Other favorite Coltrane recordings of mine: Ballads, Crescent, A Love Supreme, Coltrane, and Giant Steps.
Let me add that I know every musician must grow, but I thought the direction Coltrane took with the free jazz thing was disappointing.
Coltrane's tone was clean, fluid, dynamic & extremely beautiful & rich. He was a master.

Just arrived today! (http://planetsmilies.net/music-smiley-1306.gif)
Truly excellent mini-album, youtubing Skyward now in your honour. I first saw Therapy? pre-Babyteeth supporting Hole and they blew Hole off the stage. They were punk as fuck in those days, it's just a shame they went a bit indie rock and naff after Pleasure Death. All the same, I still use AnimalBones as a username on some boards :D.Awesome Il Furioso that sounds like a great gig! :D.
Oh listening to Animal Bones now, takes me back.
Awesome Il Furioso that sounds like a great gig! :D.
Thanks for your reply - It is a nice suprise, I did'nt think anyone on these boards would even have heard of Therapy? !! :).

Turns out the entire gig was filmed and is on youtube in four partsNice! - I will be sure to check out this vid :D.

Earth Songs Secret Garden. I heard one of the tracks, "Sometimes When it Rains" on pandora.com and just fell in love with the music. You can hear it here that cut here on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMadeENR09w&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMadeENR09w&feature=related)

It's more than a matter of your tastes of course. Oh and Trane never struggled to find his own voice when took things to a more open place improvisationally... just so you know.
I highly doubt that based on your comments.
A lot longer than that, and much more carefully too.
I LOVE King Crimson, Karl. That's a great box set. The interesting thing about KC is they've always been on the cutting edge somehow or in some way. It's also interesting that Robert Fripp is the only original member left, which begs the question: is he King Crimson? :-\
Quote from: MILet's see I've been listening to jazz for 20 years, how long have you been listening to jazz?
A lot longer than that, and much more carefully too.
Don't play games with me, James (aka Bach). You're not 59 yrs. old. You're in your late teens/early 20s. I know you from the other forum.
Well, he could have the mind of a 17-year-old, in a 59-year-old carcass . . . .
I like his take on it, that Crimson is a way of doing things. I think it's true, and that Crimson really does require other, regular collaborators. Much as I love Exposure, it is a Fripp album, and not a Crimson album.
So do I.
I LOVE King Crimson
is he King Crimson? :-\He probably is.

But's that's not a bad thing at all, right!
I actually like the Belew stuff, but then I always thought he had some cool ideas. Been listening to him since the '80's.
So do I.
He probably is.
Do you know Gentle Giant? Just backordered this from amazon.co.uk:

Had a couple of coupons, fetched this in for $29, all in:I really should just buy that Lem book - for about a year I've been waiting to find it at a low-ish second hand price, but it's too popular to go for that little :'( But I guess I can't give up now, it's the chase that makes the catch worthwhile... (By the way, have you read it yet? Some Lem translations can be clunky - I am partway through The Investigation and it's easy reading but a little awkward too).
Picked this up yesterday . . . between coupons and "Borders Bucks," I only laid out $2.09 for it:
Real blast from the past . . . I remember buying this one on vinyl when it was first released.
Yeah, me too. His best IMO. Then the next one: SECURITY.
Yes, I'll head back to Borders in a bit. I fetched in So first, partly because of sentimental fondness (saw him at the Meadowlands when he toured the album) . . . partly because I thought it less likely that anyone else would snap up Security ahead of me ; )
You knew to expect this:

The latter looks so wonderfully appropriate in its mangled resolution on Amazon, but sadly the actual cover is crisp and perfect :(
Also, I picked up secondhand:Reminds me that I visited Monet's garden in Giverny in full flower this summer (June).

The secondary/duplicate listings may offer a chance eventually, I found my one here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Russian-Architecture-William-Brumfield/dp/0521403332/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1294176295&sr=8-9) (although the current prices for the remainders are silly).
I always check not only those but also amazon.com (shipping is actually cheaper from US than from UK when it comes to books, $8 vs £8) and abebooks as well.
This is an inexpensive Hardcastle I bought yesterday. My mother loved all things English, and she passed away two days ago. Sometimes when I think of her, I will smoke this, and whenever I smoke it, I will think of her.
Henk, I didn't know you were a pipe smoker. Guess I should spend some more time in this thread.
I've never done Falcons, but you do know that briars (like the Savenelli) need to be broken in, right?
And although Savinelli is a major pipemaker, they're far from my favourite. Hope you stick with it and try a few others. Both pipe and tobacco are like jazz--you have to find what works best for you. And when you find that perfect fit, it's just amazing.
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51A72HZ3AXL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)Did this book have a previous version? Something or other in Azure? I have that if it is. It's the only comprehensive book I have ever seen on Russian Architercture. I flip through it every so often (although I cannot think where it is just now off the top of my head to check).

Saxophone Colossus
I knew I saw this album somewhere posted here at GMG. Just picked this one up myself, Scarpia. See Jazz thread.
The track "blue 7" on this album was included in a set called the "Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz" which I had as a kid and which turned me on to Sonny Rollins. I had the album on vinyl (a re-issue, not the original) but haven't heard it in a long while. Other favorite Sonny Rollins albums are "Freedom Suite" and "The Bridge."
Well I enjoyed it thoroughly last night and it is my first Rollins' cd, so I will definitely be looking into these others. Thanks!
Freedom Suite and the Bridge are both unusual in instrumentation. Freedom suite is sax, bass and drums, no piano. The bridge is Sax, bass, drums and electric guitar. The title track on Freedom suite is a multi-movement affair that is a reaction to the civil rights movement, I believe. The Bridge takes it's name from the fact that Sonny took a hiatus from performing and would go out on the Williamsburg Bridge to practice late at night.

Three excellent choices here, Conor. Oldfield's Tubular Bells is classic. I also like the Pink Floyd recordings you have listed.

Nice!! :D - how are you enjoying it David?
The 9-disc DVD set of the complete (more or less) Harold Lloyd features and shorts at 13.99 (pounds) minus VAT as it's going overseas. PAL edition.
I bought this for my father-in-law who's Mr. WWII Guy.

I have considered that set many times. Browsed the first one and Churchill seems to be a good writer. Is that something you would read straight through, Dave?
Purchased as a d/l today - I have'nt heard this one since i was a lad, should be interesting to revisit! :).
As MN Dave pointed it was Gabriel's last with the band, it was also most hated by the other band members. The concept just doesn't gel altogether that well, although, there are some good pieces in there like the title track, Fly On A Windshield, Hairless Heart, Carpet Crawlers, and Cuckoo Cocoon to name a few I enjoy.
For me, my favorite Genesis albums are A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. Even though these are Collins-led, they still retain their progressive roots and they still had Steve Hackett.
If anyone happens to like Lady Gaga, her new album is $1 today and only today on amazon mp3.
Though only in US :(.
I played the recording last night and ended up listening all the way through and enjoying it a lot! I could actually remember the lyrics to quite a few of the tracks so I must have played it more often than I thought, perhaps i even owned it on LP?, Im really not sure! :)
I remember the first time I listened I found this album really strange and also thought the concept wasnt very strong but its a worthwhile album as some of the tracks are real winners! - I found the mostly instrumental Disc 2 a bit less interesting than the first but otherwise a great album! :D
I would really like to explore early Genesis with Peter Gabriel in the band as I am a fan of his and I have never heard this music before - I will also consider the Collins-led albums you have mentioned as well MI :)
Selling England By The Pound
If anyone happens to like Lady Gaga, her new album is $1 today and only today on amazon mp3.
I sampled one track and it was waaay over-produced.
Yes. Yes it is extremely overproduced. It's like a wash of noise on several songs. Avant garde composers eat your heart out! ;D
Ugh. I didn't mind the first couple albums but she's totally lost it at this point. Besides, I've pretty much given up on trying to find new artists. Now I'm going to settle back with the hordes of those I already know.
Well I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one. I was going to pass on this album since I don't care for the singles, but for a buck... ok. Excepting this and the awesome Arcade Fire I've mostly been listening to the 80s for my pop fix. I already feel done with current pop.
I think the best Gabriel-led recording is a toss-up between Nursery Cryme and Selling England By The Pound. Foxtrot had some good moments as well. What do you think about King Crimson?
If you were to own only one KC record which do you think you would have MI? :)
Be very interested in your report on that event, mon ami!
Fact is, Bill, originally I owned all those on vinyl (well, not PG III auf deutsch, of course) so your post here is a sentimental journey I'm a-takin' . . . .
I don't think I need to hear PG or Genesis ever again. Interesting since I listened to them so much back in the 80's.
That is Van Halen for me. Probably some others that I cannot think of.
I don't think I need to hear PG or Genesis ever again. Interesting since I listened to them so much back in the 80's.
What, you weren't enraged at the corporate deception of the US issue? And in the 70s, when UK versions became available on vinyl even on these shores! ; )
You see, it's that Zen practice from The Shed!
As my own trip did unfold, it happened that I learnt of the disharmonious issues before I had ever had occasion to listen to the album itself . . . so in fact, all the pre-Sgt Pepper albums, I have heard only in their UK versions.
. . . Though you do get used to the track order you grew up with, as is my case with RS.
I sold off my Beatles albums a few years ago... shouldn't have done that! Finally getting back into the Beatles:
Yes, I could see that taking an imprint.
I was in love with that version. LOVE, I tell you!
Davey, did you go downloads or "hard CDs"?
As my own trip did unfold, it happened that I learnt of the disharmonious issues before I had ever had occasion to listen to the album itself . . . so in fact, all the pre-Sgt Pepper albums, I have heard only in their UK versions.
So what are the issues besides mono vs stereo? Did they change the song order?
Oh it looks like the US releases made a mess of things for no reason, did you any of you have that album with the horrible cover?? :o
Won't directly post the cover since it has questionable content, but you can find it here--
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yesterday_and_Today (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yesterday_and_Today)
So what are the issues besides mono vs stereo? Did they change the song order?
I sold off my Beatles albums a few years ago... shouldn't have done that! Finally getting back into the Beatles:
Cd, I told myself that I wouldn't buy aac files anymore (what itunes offers) besides the mono cd set is $40 less than digital download, and will still be $20 less even after I pick up the missing albums! :D
The repackaging is not strictly a mono VS. stereo affair, but a matter of Capitol Records in the US repackaging the product which Parlophone/EMI delivered to them. The US issues generally have (if you can imagine it — since even the full Parlophone/EMI albums before Sgt Pepper tend to run a trim 35 minutes) two, three or four songs fewer than the UK issues. One result, for example, is that Yesterday and Today is a purely US album, largely made of of songs cannablized from Rubber Soul & Revolver.
Dave (second from the left) during his "imprinting" years ;):
I've got the complete collection as they were first released on CD - I had the LPs but that was a long, long, time ago and they escaped my control at some point. It's okay with me that these are not the *best* transfers, or the mono versions - I only listen to them for nostalgia sake and these are more than enough.
I am of the generation who was in school when the Beatles first broke and heard their songs on the radio as new songs - it's more about the memories than music for me. But the music holds up - which is amazing for a pop band.
:)
A case can be made that the Beatles output are classics...
8)
:)
Does it get any better than this?
No, no it does not...
Can't wait. I've only read The Maltese Falcon.
. . . Somewhat different than the film . . . .
Which one? ; )
IIRC, the Classic was the third movie printed based on the novel (novella?)
The others do not exist in my little world, Karl. ;D
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/513ZLZdOM8L._SL500_AA300_.jpg)
Excellent choice! :)
Thanks and cheers for recommending it :) - I enjoyed the Album a lot and will definetely be returning to it over the next few weeks (have been getting back into Peter Gabriels music again)!
Some Simon & Garfunkel:
:)
Excellent.
Good to hear! :)
I prefer Peter Griffin's version; Parsley Sage, Rosemary and Lowry's Seasoning Salt. ;D
I should watch that at some point . . . .
Meanwhile . . . I found Season 4 of Columbo at the same shop for $19.99.
Not sure I need the entire series . . . .
We know where Conor was last night ... under the milky way... ;)
;D
As much as I love their big hit single, I never bothered to get an album. Let me know if any of them rise to the level of that song?
The Album (with Under the Milky Way) Starfish is excellent and would be a good starting point George (it was for me too!) :)

I also like Heyday and Gold Afternoon fix as well - I would recommend any of these 3 and think if you ever find one in a bargain Bin you wouldnt be disappointed! :D
More albums by the Church (I have quite a bit of catching up to do with this band!) :):
Good thing it's Sunday. 0:)
A couple more to satisfy my recent obsession with The Church! :D :
This isn't "King Crimson" per se, but a King Crimson Projekct recording. The recording has received mixed reviews, but I'm always up for seeing what one of my favorite groups has been up to. Got to love the Fripp!
That disc is on my wishlist but it is very expensive so I haven't bought it yet. Interested to hear your opinion of it.
From henceforth, ye shall be known as Cardinal Conor. :)
Will do, 71 dB. As you know this is a departure for the typical King Crimson sound, so much so that Fripp called this a King Crimson Projekct. It's supposed to be a very textural, laid-back album.
The 2-CD deluxe edition is expensive, but the normal standard CD release isn't a bad price.
There is a typical King Crimson sound? ;D
I have these ProjeKcts:
ProjeKct One - Live at the Jazz Cafe
ProjeKct Two - Live Groove
ProjeKct Two - Space Groove
ProjeKct Three - Masque
ProjeKct Four - West Coast Live
Textural? Sounds good. Laid-back? Ok, sounds like a relaxing album.
You are right. I didn't even realize there is a CD only version too. I have had the CD+DVD version on my wishlist. The DVD might be interesting, at least for the multichannel version of the album.
I haven't heard this new recording yet, but as I have said it got very mixed reviews, which, for me, is a good thing, it means it stirred up, at least, some controversy amongst King Crimson fans.
Usually, I'm not interested in the deluxe sets UNLESS I can get the set for a good price, if not, I just opt for just the one CD.
Speaking of KC, do you have a favorite recording?
Yeah, mixed reviews means usually bolder, more creative work. Many fans want their favorite bands to make the same album that made them fans in the first place over and over again. ???
Fans often think they know better than the band. That's crazy. Fans are entitled to dislike any album of a band but saying that album is made a wrong way is lunacy. Robert Fripp can say a KC album is a mistake. :D
There is not one superior KC album as all of them are more or less great. Lizard is one that I am especially fond of. In general I like the Lizard - Red period because of stronger classical/jazz influences. On the other hand I like The ConstruKction of Light and The Power to Believe very much for their futuristic nature. My least favorite KC album is perhaps In the Wake of Poseidon.
I don't have that many live recordings yet (I found the damn band just 3 years ago!) but Heavy ConstruKction 3 CD set kicks ass! :)
Jn McLaughlin, Al Di Meola & Paco de Lucia, Friday Night in San Francisco - Live
*Pounds the proverbial table*
Non, although it's at the top of my pile. I was tempted to start it on the bus home, but I don't like the social dynamics of being seen reading thick books in public places.
I understand. Though I did get away with reading War and Peace on the MBTA . . . .
Arrived yesterday:

I missed them completely when they were first released, MI. I didn't pay them any mind until a friend of mine at the museum shop told me they were some of his favorites.

;D I'm having a fine old time, so many buttons... The sound system rocks, this morning I plugged in the ole iPod and cranked some Beethoven, Chopin, and Exile on Main St. -- sounded great in all three.
Wow, look at him! All motorized, shiny and jazzy, way to go, bro! 8)
I'm not that versed in jazz but that sound system sure could use Lee Morgan's Sidewinder, has awesome bass line. Also Eric Dolphy's Out to lunch, and more Mingus.
I think the thing that amuses me most about the Cruze is how quiet it is... not as quiet as a hybrid or anything, but surprisingly so for a small car; it's got acoustic insulation built into it, and I can even hear the soft passages in Chopin clearly while driving at highway speeds. (Of course I was driving an 8 year old Ford, so my basis of comparison is low).
Yes, all the timejumps are as confusing as a Villa-Lobos score!
I get this delivered today and now it's half price on Amazon. >:(
Wow!
Anyway, Amazon is crediting me the difference. 8)
Returning to my roots a bit and ordered this:
This has been newly remastered and I've always been a huge fan of The Police's last two recordings: Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity. Incredible music-making here with some of the most distinctive rhythms, melodies, and harmonies in rock music.
One of the best from the 80s there, MI, great stuff.

I just gave my father-in-law some Prima. :)
Oh yeah, most definitely. I've loved this recording since I was a kid. I remember we used to have dance nights at my parents' house and this was my introduction to The Police's music.Reminds me of the episode of "Friends" where Phoebe stalks Sting and bluffs her way into his apartment. On meeting his wife who threats her with calling the police, she responds "Great, a reunion!"
