Terje Rypdal meets Meddle-era Pink Floyd? Sounds great! Terje Rypdal is such an underrated player IMHO. I own all of his albums and most of his work as a session player. Love those albums he recorded with DeJohnette and Vitous, especially the first one. Of course, Pink Floyd get plenty of attention. :)

Right on!   :)

I have this cued up for later on tonight, thanks to your post ~

MI, you probably already saw this, but a new Floyd album drops in October.  And yes, I know. . .  But still, from what I've read about this, it should be pretty cool.  Doubt Waters is on it and in any event, I'm not too keen on post-Animals Floyd really, but it apparently is very atmospheric and ambient.  I imagine it'll be something like the Gilmore/Orb release, but more Floyd-like, if that makes any sense.

In any event, it is a sort of swan song for Rick Wright (RIP), which is cool in my book.
Wise words from Que:

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)

Well, I'll definitely get The Endless River since it's probably the last Floyd release we'll get from the remaining members. Of course, the music is outtakes from The Division Bell recording sessions and songs that simply weren't used on that album. It should be interesting, but, like you, I'm generally not interested in post-Waters Floyd, but will freely admit to enjoying A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. I thought it was better than The Division Bell by a long shot.

Have you heard this PFM album?

I own the Italian sung and English sung releases and it's simply a masterpiece of prog rock IMHO. If you haven't heard it, then please give a listen whenever you get the opportunity. I think you'll enjoy it.

The new erato

I think I have it - isn't this like recycled early Crimson? (havent't listened to the clip).

There are some In the Court of the Crimson King-period elements in this PFM album, but they're two totally different sounding bands.

Won't post the images, but I found original copies (pre-remastered) of all of my favorite Genesis albums (Nursery Cryme through Wind & Wuthering). I have received The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and A Trick of the Tail. I wasn't too impressed with The Lamb, but A Trick of the Tail sounds absolutely fantastic. This album didn't need to be remastered at all. So now I'll have four sets of these landmark albums (original mixes, original mixes remasters - Definitive Remasters, 2007 remixes/remasters with 5.1 DVD Audio, Japanese SHM-CDs). Yeah, I know, I'm a Genesis freak. :) They are my favorite band after all.

Just bought some Krautrock goodies:

Conor, when you have time, check some of these bands out if you haven't already. Very cool stuff. 8)

Thanks MI - I like Can and have a few of their albums but I haven't heard Popul Vuh before. I will check these bands out for sure :)

I wished I liked both Porcupine Tree and Mars Volta more than I do, but I simply can't get into them. I've been trying for years. It seems that Genesis, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson are my go-to prog bands. My problem with a lot of modern prog is it seems to be getting away from the whole idea of virtuosity or being able to play your instrument well and intertwine those skills with an adventurous appetite for songwriting. Like for example, my biggest problem with a band like Marillion is the vocalists (both Fish and Hogarth) need to fill as much space up as they can with words instead of letting the music speak for itself. I also just don't like the tonality of Fish and Hogarth. I have a love/hate relationship with Marillion anyway.

BTW, what do you think about Gentle Giant?

The new erato

You should try the Norwegian Bank Popol Ace (originally Popol Vuh, had to change their name):

http://www.amazon.it/Popol-Ace-Vuh/dp/B007RA6UEG/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1407483727&sr=1-1&keywords=popol+ace

Their singer, Jahn Teigen, was Genesis' first call for a Peter Gabriel replacement, but he wasn't interested. Later he became known for various European song contest performances.

A very theatrical guy with a very large voice, and a very fine band at the time

No worries - we all have music that we cant connect with for whatever reason and its never compulsory to like anything just because other people do. I will say that my taste in music has gotten a lot broader in the last 10 years or so and I do think its worth re-visiting some difficult music to see if you like it from time to time. When one of my friends played me King Crimsons In the Court Of the Crimson King over 20 years ago I was into Indie Rock and thought it was pretentious nonsense. I would certainly not say that now and would even rate it as one of my favourite ever albums. Sometimes you just need the right mindset or a gateway to appreciating something and then it all makes sense and sounds wonderful - I love it when that happens! :D.
I have some Gentle Giant albums and have listened to them a few times but I haven't really gotten much out of them so far. Maybe its not the right time yet. I never throw away music now so I will re-visit them in future for sure. I know what you mean about Marillion - I must admit I didn't really connect with this band either - they kind of sound like a straight-up rock band than a Prog band to me.
I agree that Genesis, Pink Floyd and King Crimson are wonderful groups - sometimes when I listen to their music I wonder why I have such a big collection because I could be quite happy just listening to their music all the time :)

Got 2 more KC 40th Anniversary editions :):

I agree with what you're saying, Conor. I'll also say that I've always connected with progressive rock even as a kid. I didn't know what it was exactly, but I liked it. I remember my dad playing me Genesis' Wind & Wuthering on LP around 1994 (I was 12 years old) and just being completely mesmerized with the music. I believe it was around this time when I heard King Crimson as well. You just can't buy musical memories like these. :) Anyway, prog rock was in my blood from an early age. What Gentle Giant albums do you own?

That's a nice story - I like re-connecting with past periods in my life by listening to the music I would have heard at that time. Musical memorie are always strong ones :). One of my projects at the moment is to collect and re-listen to all the music I can remember liking throughout my life - I am pretty close to a complete collection I think.
the 3 GG Albums I own are these ones:

After talking with you about these albums I want to re-visit GG again - I think I will listen to them later today. I am interested in getting this album too:

is this one of their better albums MI?

For me, Three Friends through Free Hand are the best Gentle Giant albums. I see you've got Octopus and it's really an excellent album. Give it time to grow on you. Yes, The Power and the Glory is a fantastic album. I own all of these Alucard remasters and they all sound fantastic. I would recommend Three Friends next instead of The Power and the Glory. Those later pop albums they made are horrendous and completely embarrassing to their legacy IMHO almost as bad as Genesis' and Yes' forays into pop territory.
