Robin Trower--Bridge of Sighs

Sergeant Rock

The hardest working woman in the Bundespost delivered some Grateful Dead this morning: Dick's Picks Volume 30 (live shows from NYC, March 1972, including a set with Bo Diddley); and Rare Cuts & Oddities 1966 (recommended by HIPster):

The Carter Family: two JSP collections (1927-1941) (10cd)

[asin]B00006L5PQ[/asin]
Cocteau Twins: TREASURE (4AD)

[asin]B004VFYPBA[/asin]
David Murray: OCTETS (Black Saint / Soul Note, 5cd)
"Original album" format, so each disc is quite short, modest LP length.  Great, rugged, spirited music that I'm happy I still have a taste for.  I've been needing to own at least a couple of these for a very long time.

[asin]B006BHP30S[/asin]
World Saxophone Quartet: COMPLETE BLACK SAINT & SOUL NOTE RECORDINGS (6cd)
A bit more of a risk, as I only know two of these from way back.  Julius!  And James Spaulding on the last of these albums.  I remember not knowing any of Spaulding's mature (later) playing, and hearing him on a David Murray record of Grateful Dead covers, and this one solo was just so much fun...his tone was burrish and hot and gravelly and had lots of R&B in it.  That was a long time ago, too.....

[asin]B008OJ2908[/asin]
Muhal Richard Abrams: COMPLETE BLACK SAINT & SOUL NOTE RECORDINGS (8cd)
This is the one I have been most psyched about.  One of the great heterodox quiet giants; maybe one of the greats, period.  For some reason this is significantly cheaper at Importcds than Amazon, even compared to MP prices.

Jean-Luc Godard: HISTOIRE(S) DU CINEMA (Madman, 3dvd)
A region-4 set from the Australian Madman label, since there's some commentary (intro?) by scholar Adrian Martin and a second set of subtitles with all the sources/references listed.  It's really too bad that USA label Olive didn't include these in its somewhat cheaper edition; plus Olive's English subtitles are hardcoded, can't be turned off.   "High impact themes and actual sexual activity"!

[asin]B006YQZR2A[/asin]
Porter Ricks: BIOKINETICS (reissue, Type, 2012)

[asin]B000FOQHJO[/asin]
REMBETIKA: SONGS FROM THE GREEK UNDERGROUND (JSP, 4cd)

[asin]B0001N9ZKW[/asin]
Richard & Linda Thompson: I WANT TO SEE THE BRIGHT LIGHTS TONIGHT

[asin]B009CXLS4S[/asin]
Scott Walker: BISCH BOSCH (4AD)
I also see that a box of his string of lovely 60s records has been released, but I have those already.  These later recordings are strange and dark, but they usually grow on me.

You're as bad as I am. :P  I'd be interested in your thoughts on those Carter Family releases; I did some off-and-on listening to them when I was in an Americana phase and likely will again when I hit another one, but I only kept a disc or two on hand and didn't spring for a box set.

Thread duty:

I was fortunate with this one in that I had some gift cards that covered it:

Arrived this morning, another HIPster recommendation: Ladies and Gentleman...the Grateful Dead, four discs of music from the five shows the Dead put on at the Fillmore East in April 1971.

I wondered why you didn't buy the Bear Family box...until I looked at Amazon!  Okay, now I understand  :D

I agonized a bit over it, because Bear Family is such a remarkable label of record and repute.  For those who love roots, country, related-pop/rock, and Americana who are not especially on a budget, it's the place to go.  But the very best price I could find was over $100 more expensive for the BF Carters box.  I am just not enough the diehard...

I see now it's The Smiths remasters. I like the sound on the vinyl, but the CDs have some added compression that I don't like. I listen to the old RT oriignal CDs.

That Mat Maneri looks interesting, HIPster; it's a monster list of collaborators....I cannot imagine it would sound much like the music he made with his dad.  He seems to be a remarkably flexible musician, in terms of the diversity of situations he gets into.

I bought this after looking into a recommendation by GMG's (former member?) mjwal, and because I was able to find a "like new" hardback on the cheap (fingers crossed):

These are the best I've heard.  Listening last night I was hearing details I dont remember hearing in 20 years of listening to these.

Great album and still very much underrated. Did you get the remaster LP style CD issue?
