No particularly good composer birthdays for your birthday but Ravel and Hindemith died on it!

Bwa-ha-ha-haaaah!

I will post the new photos when I have the time to learn how to do so with the new camera. But for now, let me tell you about an interesting Chinese tradition.

Traditionally, on a child's first birthday, the parents are supposed to find some interesting items and place them all at equal distance from the child, and see which one he or she grabs first. This is supposed to give us a glimps into the child's future. For instance, if the child grabs the abacus, then the child might get into business. If the child reaches for a musical instrument, the child might get into music, etc. While this is nothing more than an old wife's tale, it is nevertheless an interesting game to play.

This is the result for Kimi:

First thing: The Remote Control
Second item: Pen
Third item: pencil
Fourth items: makeup pencil
Fifth item: Cell phone

From what I can see, she simply reaches for all the things I wouldn't let he touch before. But other people offered the following interpretations:

Kimi will be a literary person just like her dad, except that she will be more controlling and a more sophisticated social darling.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Judging by how fast she changes channels, she might be the harshest TV critic as well!

Seriously, that's a lovely little tradition--one I hadn't heard before.  Thank you for sharing it, as well as Kimi's results.

My prediction: Moderator at a classical music forum!  ;D

Paul, isn't this the method used by Tibetans when they search for their next Dalai Lama?
