For me, Messiaen and Webern alike . . . I really dig a piece now and again, but they aren't saturation-listen composers for me . . . .
I went through a lengthy Webern saturation-listening phase some years back when his style just seemed utterly right to me; now it's almost as if his music is now so much part of who I am in musical taste that I don't have to listen to it any more. (Of course, I still do, just not so often.)

Inspired by a conversation elsewhere, comparative Rocky IV listening:

Picking a favourite performance between these two, I think, would be simply petty. Art practiced at this level transcends comparisons of this kind.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."

Ligeti: Cello Concerto, Violin Concerto, Etc.

Some listens from my small collection of contemporary Classical Music :)

I approve this message! :) Ligeti is such a cool composer. He's probably one of the only "avant-garde" composers I can take seriously. His music is so accessible and I think that's one of the reasons for its success. Have you ever checked out any Lindberg, Conor?

Listening to Ravel's Piano Concerto in G. This is one of the best performances I've heard of the work and I return to this recording often. There's something about the playing here that is just ego-free. You have a pianist and conductor who are on the same page, which is why this performance is so successful.

Pfitzner Violin Concerto, Albert conducting the Bamberg SO with violinist Saschko Gawriloff

Reality has interrupted my Pfitzner. Mrs. Rock reminded me I have duties in the kitchen and Zinman's Beethoven Overtures will make a better companion to the task at hand.

Yes, I was wondering about this disc. The Domus recordings on Hyperion are quite good. Have you heard these?

Yes, I have them. I also have the Hubeau/Via Nova, the Ax/Stern/Laredo/Ma, as well as a very fine Zig-Zag issue of the quartet no1, but the Wanderer have a sensousness and rhytmical flexibilty that makes them something special.

Excellent, Erato. I'll pick this up sometime.
