As a matter of principle (and being a natural penny pincher ) I never buy records full price. This year I made an exception for these two. It just so happens that they are of music by Schubert:

The Zimerman disc is well known by now. I have had it for a few weeks but I'm waiting for the right setting before unwrapping it. These works need - and deserve - the utmost mental preparation for a proper appreciation.

The Equilbey disc is recent, too. I was alerted to its existence by a Presto Classical email. I was bowled over by the samples I heard. Stanislas De Barbeyrac in particular seems to be the happy possessor of an incredible tenor voice: manly, firm, youthful, operatic in scope (microphones should be pulled back, not brought towards his mouth !). He sings Hylas in John Nelson's recent Les Troyens. Equilbey's orchestra seems just the right size and style. Very diverse orchestrations by Brahms, Liszt, Reger, Britten, Mottl, Strauss, Berlioz, Webern and - the only living composer of the lot - Franck Krawczyk. I already have a disc that contains most of these orchestrated lieder (Abbado, DG) but I find it less than totally satisfying.

Thanks for highlighting this one. I love these songs in orchestral form. I tend to agree that the Abbado/DG, while sung well, lacks something. What I could hear on this new cd sounded more urgent and with greater clarity. I also like that they use a male voice in Erlkonig, so I will probably get it just for that. Accentus are usually quite reliable as well.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Félicien David's « ode-symphonie » Christophe-Colomb, cast in the same mould as his more famous Le désert, a symphony, a trio, motets, mélodies, piano pieces and the original ending to his opera Herculanum. Almost 4 hours of music by a composer that is gradually being rediscovered, by Spineur among others  ;). Among the musicians at work: Hervé Niquet, the ensemble Les siècles under F-X Roth and ténor Cyrille Dubois. That'll be my Xmas present and last purchase in 2017  :D.

And yesterday, a 30% coupon from Barnes and Noble led me into this temptation, for about $10 below the Amazon MP price.

I've been waiting weeks for a delivery estimate, and in the end how much Vaughan Williams does one person need?

Considering RVW is one of my favorite composers and Previn's cycle is one of my favorites, a person needs a lot. ;)

At the very least, a person needs the Tuba concerto...I think it's a good set overall, and the fillers are all good ones.
I urge ordering it from Movie Mars (I've never heard of the other vendor listed on Amazon).

In fact, now that I check, Arkivmusic has it in stock for $22.99, meaning cheaper than Amazon MP

I'd order it from Arkivmusic if I were Scarpia. I've never had any issues with this site. MovieMars, on the other hand, is a seller I'm always leery of. I got into a long dispute with them many years ago over a Bruckner symphony set (Gunter Wand's Cologne cycle I believe). I forget what the issue was exactly, but I had to get Amazon involved. It wasn't pretty. Anyway, I ended up getting the set for free, but it sure felt like an uphill battle.

My problem with Moviemars centers on slow shipping.  But Arkivmusic is also cheaper right now.

Of course, I just got hit with slow shipping from Arkivmusic.  That last Martinu order was supposedly shipped on 12/8,  and finally arrived yesterday...ten days in transit. I suspect the Post Office is a bit overwhelmed right now.

I'm willing to be more lenient since it's the Holidays, but that is my problem, in general, with MovieMars, too. ImportCDs is pretty slow as well. Classical Music Superstore (aka Naxos of America) are 'okay' but they're not as fast as they used to be. I still buy from i-deals (formally Blowitouthere) and they provide decent service. Anyway, I didn't mean for this to turn into a long tangent on what Amazon MP sellers I like/dislike. ;D

Well, I felt relief rather than disappointment when I canceled the order. (I had ordered it from Amazon proper, which turned out to be the cheapest because I have prime shipping.) I already have Haitink, which I think is superb, Andrew Davis, which I think is superb, various Barbirolli discs, which I think are beyond superb, Thomson, which I haven't even listened to yet, Slatkin, which I haven't listened to yet, Boult/Decca, which I haven't listened to yet, and various discs by Brabbins, Previn, Hickox, etc. I've got enough. (And I have the Tuba concerto by Thomson.)

I have always had great responses from Blowitaouthere and Classical Music Superstore. There's some guy in northern Georgia too, but I forget the name. Z overstocks sometimes has amazing prices but they ship from the UK and are often very slow.

I used to use Zoverstocks, but a few packages never showed up and I lost confidence in them. OxfordshireEngland has become my default UK based marketplace seller. They seem to have equivalent pricing. In the US importcd and Classical Music Superstore are my default choices, although often I buy used CDs from random sellers, as long as they have good feedback.

Good to know, I will try them next time (if there is a next time, I've been good this year) instead.
