I am a completist when it comes to La Compagnia del Madrigale, so I ordered this from presto:

Campagnia de Madrigale have focussed on later music in previous recordings - Marenzio, Gesualdo, Monteverdi - and this recording bears witness to that. They have chosen madrigals which they think shows de Rore as herald of the baroque, de Rore as rule breaker, the madrigals which even Monteverdi may have admired for their boldness. So it helped me to get a fuller picture of de Rore, and now I see him, like Trabaci, as a composer who straddled renaissance and post renaissance music.

For that reason alone, I'm glad to have heard the recording.

You missed the Marx's magnificent Eine Herbstsymphonie!  and now with its new recording, which I hope to listen to soon. Maybe it's a bit overlong, but I think this ravishing music will reward anyone successfully.

I suppose the orchestra was assembled for the occasion. As for Simon, the booklet says he was an American who studied  with Krips. He was born in 1937, died in 2013, was "a major player in the Handel revival of the 1970s and 1980s" and founding music director of the Washington Chamber Symphony.

Didn't miss it...just wanted an idea of what his music is like. The Nature Trilogy was encouraging. Herbstsymphonie will get its due in time.

While I love his beautiful songs, they are nevertheless more derivative than, say, songs by Schoeck. Don't you wish he composed more orchestral works instead of focusing mostly on lieder?

The Kraus Mozart concertos box ... well, obviously you want to hear it, it's Kraus in Mozart, so ... but the orchestra is indeed not up to scratch, so this is another case of soloist with accompaniment, rather than a dialogue and chamber music-minded playing.

On the orchestra, I found this, I assume it's accurate though I wouldn't know:

A "pickup" orchestra which existed only for the purposes of ad-hoc recording, between the 1950s and 1960s, and associated with smaller, budget labels. Hans Swarowsky conducted for this and many similar, less than top-notch, orchestras whose identity is not always clear - and he also  seems  to have been credited for many recordings he did not conduct! It was common to practice "moonlighting", which involved collecting, on short notice, professional musicians from existing orchestras like the Wiener Symphoniker (Vienna Symphony Orchestra), or the Wiener Opernorchester (Vienna State Opera Orchestra), plus a few free-lancers - when a recording was to be made for a budget label.

Hence, the quality of playing and recordings varies - sometimes very good, sometimes, not so much. For example, the string sections often sound rather thin (perhaps owing to a shortage of players used, or sub-par recording conditions). Established labels and orchestras had reputations to maintain.

Cheers André. I have CD 4 of this set which features "The Trout" among other works and I have always enjoyed that performance. I assumed that the other CDs would be of a similar enough vein in terms of interpretation and performance, hence the purchase.

I discovered them through copies sent to me many years ago by one of our esteemed global moderators, whose modesty would suffer from being named here . It really changed my mind about PI in Schubert chamber music.
