Thanks for the offer.  I do have the Lp.  I'll probably just do a selective download of the items in the set I don't have, unless the complete set is cheaper as often happens.

Supraphonline has a good price on the set:

https://www.supraphonline.cz/album/586246-ivan-moravec-portrait/cd-dvd

According to xe.com, a FLAC download will cost about $AUD60 and the box set about $AUD70. This is compared to Europadisc who are charging $AUD127 and don't do digital downloads from what I can see.
Cheers

Holy shit!

Hello.

The Bach is a reissue.  I've not seen the Chopin before.

The Hermes is one of those quartets that should record everything.

I'll have to get the box just for this Janacek, which looks like the same recordings that were once on a Nonesuch LP:

https://www.discogs.com/Jan%C3%A1%C4%8Dek-Ivan-Moravec-Sonata-1X-1905-In-The-Mist-On-An-Overgrown-Path-Excerpts/release/4064323
I'll poke around a bit through my papers.  Somewhere I have a printout of what was then all of his known recordings.  A friend/fan spent a lot of time setting up a website about Ivan Moravec and his recordings.  I printed it out (should scan it at some point).  Last time I checked, the site was no longer there.

On Supraphon I have:

1) Beethoven, Franck, Ravel with Belohlavek
2) Chopin:  Scherzi, Etudes, Mazurkas
3)  Live in Brussels
4)  Schumann:  Piano Concerto & Franck:  Symphonic Variations (Crystal Collection)

and a 4-CD boxed set:  IM Plays Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and French Music

8 CDs on other labels and a few Connoisseur Society and one Nonesuch LP (in various states of condition).

Would love to hear more of his Janacek too!  FYI, there's a wonderful CD on Hänssler Classics called "Live in Prague".  It has the Sonata 1. X. 1905 In the Mists. The recordings are from 2000.  First CD/recording that I bought of his and was a case of love at first listening to!  :D  https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/7972907--ivan-moravec-live-in-prague

EDIT:  Found my Moravec discography printouts! Yeah! ;D

Thanks for the info.  I tried, I think that it was a few days ago, and couldn't find it on their website.  Don't know whether or not it wasn't there yet, or it was 'hiding' from me?  :(

That would be the Choral Fantasia and a Piano Concerto?

Google Translate's effort with the HMV.co.jp Japanese:

"Beethoven's complete collection of piano sonatas, recorded around 1970, is particularly well known for its outstanding interpretation, and the 1958 "Hammer Clavier" sonatas are complemented as the first sound source. It also includes many of his specialties (Beethoven, Handel, Hindemith, Couplin, Debussy, Roussel, Ravel, etc.) on their first CD.
The sound source for the first CD has been remastered at 24bit / 192kHz from the original master. In addition, a special album recorded by Toshiba Music Industry at that time when he came to Japan in 1970 is also included."

I don't know if that link will work since the URL itself contains Japanese characters. Fingers crossed you get to see what all is available from Eric Haidoshekku and Eric Hydsheck and Eric Heidsieck. Excited to hear his take on Mendelssohn's "Variations on Strict."

EDIT: Oooh, F. Couplan's "French popular or domino"!!

Yes, plus the oft reissued LvB Cello Sonatas, the still standard-setting Faure Nocturnes, the occasionally reissued handful of Mozart Piano Concertos, Faure chamber music, plus some Chopin, 60s Handel (to contrast with his later recordings), Couperin, Debussy, Hindemith, four hands stuff with his wife, and a couple other items.  Some are first CD releases.  I will be keen to compare the Mozart concerto remastering to the spendy Toshiba remasterings I bought years ago.

Between this and the Barbizet box, I will be in French piano heaven to start the new year.

He is a member of the Piper-Hiedsieck family of champagne makers and a performer with very personal ideas - the good kind of eccentric. Piano nerds love him because of his unusual choices and the way he embodies an old French style of playing (he studied with Cortot) with better recorded sound and technique. He does occasionally get a little too weird - I don't like his Beethoven pastoral sonata.

Of course the other thing is that, as the link shows, many of his recordings are quite rare - 8 of the 27 CDs are the first time the recordings are appearing on CD.

It's funny the labels have finally fully committed themselves to CD releases of all their archival jewels just as CDs and CD players are being phased out.

Box-sets are likely high enough margin to at least recoup costs, plus a little something.  Since everything has now been remastered using the latest and greatest technology, the recordings can now move into permanent, very low margin streaming to generate tens of dollars a year for the companies, in perpetuity.

Thanks. I already have the Beethoven sonatas and cello sonatas. Extremely eager to hear the Faure, not sure about the other material, though I'm sure performances are good. Going to be a tough decision (maybe I should just pony up for existing Faure recordings).

Typically, I would not notice the symphonies transcribed for piano.  Typically, the pianist is not Hinrich Alpers.

His web-site lists the Liszt transcriptions as one project in five recitals.  Another project, the complete sonatas in eight recitals.  I hope that means another new cycle materializes out of nowhere.

I don't love the Faure (I have those performances in a Tortelier box).

Have you got any expectations that it wouldn't turn out to be just another third tier set?
