Surprisingly good movie.  Watched this off of hbo max.

May have already stated that for the holidays, we replaced some 9+ year old AV equipment w/ new Sony 4K HDTV & BDP - last few nights have been watching the movies below which are replacements for my older BDs - Oz was the most spectacular viewing (and listening to Judy singing O the R) - these are only my 4th movie replacements (and have bought a few 4K UHD streamers from Amazon which have been excellent); for those making a similar transition, I'm not sure 'how many' of these BD films I now own (over 500) will even be offered and likely many fewer that I will dump my money on unless the prices really come down - seems to be a medium more for 'younger ones' w/ only a small/modest BD collection.  But the experience is much fun and amazing.  Dave :)

Dave, it is funny I just remembered that around the same time we both bought 1080p LG tvs.  And now we both own 4k hdr Sony tvs, and again purchased around the same time!

Hey David - as the Aussie's say (I think) - we must be Mates (I think that may have been a line in Crocodile Dundee) - ESP or something?  Hope that you're enjoying as much as me - Dave :)

Yes mine is replacing the cinema experience.  My preferred theater has been closed since October.  There is one nearby but they've taken no precautions so I won't go.  Besides all the movies showing now can be either streamed or rented digitally.  On a 75 inch screen and a nice sound bar it is truly cinematic.

Boy, 75" must be amazing! About the same size as my son's newest purchase which we would have viewed last year w/o COVID! - but 49" suits us just fine in our den.  I'm really debating how to spend money on media w/o duplicating my BD collection at my age - SO, will first look for streaming 4K UHD offerings, preferably 'free' when available; then, either rental or purchase (if the price is right) of streaming UHD movies (probably will even replace some physical media that I own just to free up storage); finally will consider a limited number of 4K physical media purchases; for me (a lover of musicals), My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music would be considerations or some of the epic films from the last century, e.g. The Ten Commandments, Lawrence of Arabia, and others.  But just trying to figure out how to best use these 4K devices w/o a huge investment in media!  Dave :)

I did a check on my 4K files after finding a couple of them weren't HDR, though they had every right to be (Dunkirk and Elysium). I managed to fix them and decided to examine other files, and to my shock and horror I found my player drive had a non-HDR 4K copy of 2001, A Space Odyssey and I had never loaded my HDR rip of the disc and thus had never actually seen the film as it was meant to be seen.

OK, so, buy this disc, you won't regret it. It should be foundational in any 4K library. I clipped the black screen overture (chap. 1), but diskies can just skip to the chap. 2 MGM logo.

When I'm sufficiently bored I will rewatch a previously viewed movie -- perhaps for the umpteenth time.  Recently it was my fourth or fifth viewing of ...

The Death of Stalin:  director and writer, Armando Iannucci

Darkly hilarious ;D  The case is mostly British actors with the major exception of Steve Buscemi's terrific portrayal of Nikita Khrushchev -- a much more congenial Khrushchev than the real-life character no doubt.

Not sure that I can justify $25 for the 4K version of 2001: Space Odyssey; although I own the BD, the film was never a favorite - looking on Amazon Prime Video, do not see a UHD streaming purchase although my son would SAY NO, GET THE DISCS!  (believe he bought the 4K) - BUT as stated before will be spending my money judiciously on 4K physical media, esp. at high prices - now if the original Star Wars films (IV, V, & VI) come out in an inexpensive 4K box, then would be tempted.  My feeling is that these high 4K prices need to drop to entice us w/ substantial BD collections to replace them in part, but just my 2 cents.

Planet Earth II in 4K - a few nights ago we finished Blue Planet II from a combo box and last night started the other new series - again, just spectacular in 4K - wife even awed by the new Sony HDTV and the appearance in 4K - now I was enticed to spend the extra $$ on this combo because I only had Planet Earth I in BD.  Dave :)

Ever since l saw the film in its initial release, 2001: Space Odyssey has been at the head of the line for me. Every review I've seen of the ( second ) 4K HDR has been glowing, and l look forward to plunking down the dollars to have the most recent version, once l am 4K- ready.

Hi LKB - well that's how my son talks to me -   However, I'll save my $25 for another 4K release -  8)  But I do have a story about Keir Dullea - wife and I married in July 1970 (2001 made in 1968) and spent a week on Bermuda for our honeymoon (thanks to her parents) - on our return flight, we were seated in coach (me on the aisle and her in the middle); WELL, at the window was Keir Dullea - now we were rather sedate and respected his privacy but they exchanged a few words when the lunches arrived - a pleasant bonus to the end of a great week on the island!  Dave :)

There are some HDR clips from 2001 on YT that are worth checking out.
