Helsinki PO, John Storgards.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

That is all something of a relief, Olivier, as al least it was not all consigned to the bin  ;D

well... I have deleted all those from my Idagio list.

TD: sampling more Jean Cras.

hum...I must have an off afternoon...  :-X

I don't think I knew you had that one. I've yet to listen to all of it, but so far 'exquisite' is a totally appropriate word.

Yeah, I've owned this recording for a year (or more) and embarrassingly just yesterday I removed it from it's plastic wrap. :-[ I think it's a beautiful recital, but, like you, I haven't listened to all of it yet.

I venture to say the problem lies with M. Cras, not with Olivier...

Strauss: Orchestral songs sung by Soile Isokoski

Das Rosenband
Ich Wollt ein Sträusslein binden
Sausle, liebe Myrte
Arls mir dein Lied erklang
Befreit

This is wonderful stuff. What a voice! What a particularly magnificent delivery of Befreit. It sounds like a whole opera in just five and a half minutes. I could play that version on repeat all day!

Pounds the table! Wunderbar! I should revisit this recording. You should definitely hear Studer/Sinopoli on DG in the Vier letzte Lieder next. It's a different approach and more subdued, but I think it works and it has now become one of my go-to performances.

Love this quartet, but don't know this recording. My introduction to Schnittke was back in the late 1980s, during three consecutive nights by the Kronos Quartet. On each concert, they did one of the three (at the time) quartets, and I could hardly contain excitement. Had never heard anything like them.

That sounds terrific!

Your Schoenberg/Schnittke pairing is intriguing -- I may have to try that.

The emotional contrasts between them seemed many and stark to me, and the differences did indeed appear to make the inherent characteristics of each stand out in vivid technicolor.

Hi Rafael,
I did enjoy some of his piano music earlier in the week. The rest so far is not really convincing me.

I bought several recordings of his music several years ago. And, from what I've heard, my conclusion is I'll just stick with my numero uno, Debussy, but also Ravel, Fauré, Poulenc, Milhaud, Koechlin, et. al. if I want to listen to French music that actually moves me.

Marais, Marin (1656-1728) - Pieces for Viol, Bk. 3 w/ Francois Joubert-Caillet/L'Achéron - listening from Spotify; 4-disc set - they have recorded the first three books on a total of 13 CDs; assume they are in the process of adding the last two books, likely bringing the total to 20+ discs - I'll await their appearance on Spotify - a major investment unless eventually boxed at a reduced price?  Dave :)

My 12 year old Kimi and I listened to the York Bowen Viola Concerto twice today. Well, we were just listening to it once, but after I changed to a Hindemith CD, she asked me to put the Bowen back on. "I want to listen to it again, especially the leitmotif in the first movement." She said.

Well, we listened again and I have to admit, maybe I wasn't paying full attention the first time, but the work is absolutely stunning!

Charming girl!

Cheers, John. Yes, I already own the Studer/Sinopoli version and I too think it very fine. Her singing and the accompaniment under Sinopoli is very sensitive to the music.

String Quartet No. 1, "Kreutzer Sonata"
Talich Quartet

Besides these Janáček performances being outstanding from Talich, this recording also features a scorching performance of Schulhuff's String Quartet No. 1. Too bad they never recorded his 2nd SQ.
