On Poju's list everything is good except for the Pacific Rim sequel which is utterly forgettable.

Mmm...yes; the sequel no one wanted. I am sure many wanted a sequel, but not this one, for sure. I hear studios are driving their blockbusters towards Asian markets, and this sequel may have been a result of that. Big money overseas, even if US audiences aren't interested.

I tried to watch "Woman in the Train" on TV, but it turned out very different from what I expected. It was very confusing. Whose story was it and from whose perspective? It was all flash-backs and some kind of illusions with no sense of cronology. I stopped watching after about 40 minutes because I found the whole thing annoyingly pretentious.

Am I revealing too much if I said I would probably choose Unforgiven, but more likely City Slickers:-[

VS

I didn't choose anything. My dad recommended Unforgiven, but I am not a fan of westerns. I find those movies very boring. I saw a little bit of the movie while channel surfing. Clint Eastwood was wrestling with pigs. Not my cup of tea, not even close.  :P

I care about newer big budget movies so little that I don't even know Pacific Rim movie series. Is they about submarines in the Pacific Ocean or what?  I just don't care.

The Guilty

This is a Danish film with English subtitles. It is about a police officer in a dispatch call centre. The film never leaves the room. It is based around this one officer who takes a particular call which is a kidnap and hostage situation. There is also a sup-plot with this particular policeman who is in court the next day facing charges. In both situations all is not what it seems and the film is terrifically tension filled.

Just saw the American film version on Netflix with Jake Gyllenhaal.  Pretty good.  :)

Nice flick, but for some reason not available on Blu-ray... ...so there is no way to get rid of the DVD.

Poju;D  Unforgiven deserves more that just watching the opening scenes when the 'meat' of the movie comes later - I'm a BIG western fan (as kids we would often get cowboy suits/hats and double holster cap guns - of course, I'm an oldster growing up before all of the space stuff and CGI came around) - there are many lists of 'Best Westerns' and their ranking can be quite varied, but this film is usually in the top 10, e.g. No. 2 in this LIST (in fact, just counted and I own 17 of the top 20 in that ranking).  The film was nominated for 9 Oscars, winning 4 including 'Best Picture' and 'Best Director' for Eastwood - if desired, take a look at its Wiki Article to see how the plot/story evolves - Unforgiven is a pretty gruesome revisionist western and many more on the list might appeal?  But no problem with your dislike for the genre - can't remember my wife watching any of my westerns with me, and if a John Wayne film, she runs and locks the bedroom door!  8)  Dave

My father didn't go to the movie theatre too often, but I have fond memories of us going to the latest James Bond and Clint Eastwood films.

I have seen this story more as a tragedy, where I sympathize with Richard Dreyfuss much more than I approve of anything Bill Murray's character does.

Well, I just have never understood the charm of westerns, but then again my taste in movies is a bit weird. I really really like J-horror for example. Or how about cheesy sci-fi movies of the 70's and early 80's? Yes please! Right at my alley!  0:) I know unforgiven is regarded as a brilliant western, but those movies just aren't for me. Maybe it is culturally easier to like them if you are American? Anyway, historical movies have always been problematic for me, because it it difficult to relate to anything and I am always wondering if the movies assume the viewer to know as historical facts...

Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)

A zombie apocalypse musical set during Christmas in Britain. If you like the modern pop trends of movie musicals, these songs work OK, but it will also depend on how you feel about the contrast of Zombie horror alongside teen-school musical, complete with power-hungry headmaster.

The opening CDC recommendation of staying home due to a global pandemic was oddly surreal, but apparently, no one heeded that warning (I assume due to personal civic liberties).

My movie tastes involve many genres, including old sci-fi films from the '50s which I saw at the local theaters growing up at the time - below are some of the classics from the era (these made from 1951-1956) in my film collection; amazingly, all but 'The Thing' are blu-ray productions done extremely well; many have 'cheesy' special effects of the times but for a kid, they were still scary -   Dave :)

P.S. also own many of the Ray Harryhausen stop-action films from Mighty Joe Young (1949) to Clash of the Titans (1981) w/ a number in-between those dates.

Second viewing. And once again surprised at how impressed I am with this. For anyone wanting a well above average thriller in the Bourne style its highly recommended, and you don't need to have seen the tv show its spun off from.

The Protege

The action sequences can't make up for the cringe-inducing dialog and sex scenes (Michael Keaton is 28 years older than Maggie Q.  Sam Jackson, who plays the father figure to Maggie Q's protoge, is only 2 years older than Keaton.)

I filter out movies a lot. If it doesn't show promise I skip it. This looks like it is a stupid action movie for metoo generation (strong women/weak male). Samuel L. Jackson is a fine actor, but he is in every other movie so...

"Strong woman / weak male" stories are as old as the Greeks.

And even if they weren't...

Sure, but nowadays big studios turn stories that should be about strong males into stories about weak males to appear woke and "progressive" to ignorant people who don't understand that these studios are economically conservative and right-wing no matter how much they shoehorn women, blacks and sexual minorities in roles that were created for straight white men. Now apparently they have ruined even James Bond and God knows what happens with Indiana Jones next (I won't be watch these). Of course women, blacks and sexual minorities deserve strong representation in movies just as straight white men, but they should have their OWN great characters and stories. Studios are just so damn lazy, that instead of creating something new and interesting, they ruin old pop-cultural icons and idiots think these studios are "progressive" and left-wing for doing it. :P
