LOL!   I'm sure that many remember that early 70s Cosmo foldout inserted above.

I remember in his Playboy interview later that decade, he regretted the Cosmo shot. He thought he would have received the Academy Award for Deliverance if he hadn't posed for it.

Just curious if he were even nominated?  Below the 'major' awards in the 1973 Oscars - Deliverance nominated for 'Best Picture' - Reynolds if nominated for 'Best Actor' would have had tough competition - would have been hard to beat Brando despite his impersonation - but who knows at this point?  Dave :)

These days, he would have been a shoo-in because of it. He was ahead of his time. Give him points for that.

TD: My lighter fare last night was Star Trek III, The Search for Spock. I am very fond of II - IV. I find myself shying away from V & VI, but game for VII. Don't think I'm interested in the "reboot" movies.

I like Sleuth, of course (I'm a sucker for films whose screenplay was a stage success. Didn't realize that both Caine and Olivier were nominees that year. There's no doubt they ought to have been.

No, and back then I think he was bitter about it. He had the largest box-office draws for many, many years, but was never actually acknowledged as an actor.

He was finally nominated for an AA in the 90's for Best Supporting Actor (Boogie Nights), but I don't think he won it.

Nice! II-IV are a great trilogy. The post-2009 movies are skippable, particularly the maddening 2nd (at least for those who have enjoyed the older films); they offer more adventure and thrills than personable science fiction, ala earlier Star Trek. Fits the times, though.

I have always wondered: how does the Director of the BEST PICTURE (The Godfather) end up NOT  (Coppola) receiving the BEST DIRECTOR award?!

Did the Best Picture end up being the best despite the director?

Perhaps people felt that the actors saved the movie from the director and made it the best (?) or...?

Concerning the two versions of The Exorcist III/Legion ...

For the Director's Cut, the original version had to be culled from videotapes, rather than the original footage on film.  As a result, according to the reviews, the quality of those sections is sub-par, since the tapes had deteriorated during the 25 years before their discovery.

Apparently no real restoration of the tapes was done.

I did enjoy the theatrical cut. Much more suspense than gross-out, compared to the Friedken movie. About to embark on the Reconstruction with commentary by Blatty.

No, I've only been learning of it via this commentary. Other takeaways: per Cato's post, the exorcism (with the lightning hitting the floor, and the damned reaching up into the cell) was added at the insistence of Morgan Creek; Blatty's ending was simpler. And although Blatty didn't recall why nothing came of it, he talked with Jn Carpenter, who was very interested in directing a sequel. That would have made for a better II, perhaps.

What about scripts? Cinematography? Sound and music?

Best Picture is an overall award. I see nothing illogical about the proposition that the best sum of parts might not align with a single part of the equation being the best.

Necessary Roughness (1991)
Scott Bakula, Hector Elizando, Robert Loggia, Kathy Ireland
Jason Bateman, Sinbad, Larry Miller, Rob Schneider, Dick Butkus

Another US football flick, this one decidedly 2nd string.

The list of early 90's character actors above will probably make you cringe, but this was akin to Major League from around the same time. Silly and dumb in equal measure.

It kind of makes me want to rewatch some of Quantum Leap to see if it is terrible in retrospect.

I was supposed to see Larry Miller's comedy act a few years ago, (here playing the deliciously villainous Dean of Students) but shortly before I was supposed to attend, he fell and hit his head. I think he may have sustained some permanent damage, and hasn't returned to live appearances.  VS

Star Trek: First Contact. Tickled at the thought of how highly illogical the Vulcans will find Cochrane. I enjoyed this thoroughly. Glad that Troi was in the cast, though she was of necessity underutilized. Bemused, too, that two things I've missed by skipping to this 'un were: Laforge no longer requires a visor and Data has an emotion chip.

It's been maybe ten years since l watched STFC, but l remember enjoying Ben Cross. I also got a chuckle out of tipsy Troi, unless I'm remembering incorrectly.

I'm a sucker for just about anything with the Borg, tbh. I wish l could produce a film featuring the Borg returning to Earth during the Renaissance. I can see the king/queen of < insert country of preference here > now, rallying their troops:
