Zemlinsky: Sinfonietta

These cover arts are nasty, curious to say the least, but the music is just quite impressive, and how well played and conducted it is here!

Listening to this Malkki recording of the Sinfonietta now, but I'll note that the American premiere with Mitropoulos and the NYP has been uploaded to youtube:

Beethoven: String Quartet No. 9

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Looks like an interesting musical document.

I'm enjoying this set more than expected. I'm even enjoying Webern beyond his famous Op. 1!

Shostakovich: Piano Concerto No. 1

Solid performance this.

Schoenberg: String Quartet No. 4

Yet another of those works which I could call "bewitching and meticulously written music". It's an exercise for my brain to grasp the music, his form, his transformation. It's an unpredictable piece, in many respects: rhythm, harmony, motif or theme, etc.

Olivier Messiaen: Le Banquet céleste, etc. Louis Thiry

I was at an organ recital at the local Episcopal cathedral this afternoon which concluded with a piece by Messiaen and I was in the mood for more. I have Traverso here to thank for putting me onto monsieur Thiry's work, but I found this boxed set for under ten dollars last year, brand new, what a steal. I love Messiaen's sense of harmony. Unparalleled.

Congratulations,it is a really excellent set with good sound. There are more good recordings (this one is not complete) but Thiry is one of the finist.Did you know that he was blind?

Buxtehude: Abendmusiken [Fortin/Meunier]

All of this various music is very fine and is always engaging; it is both emotional and devotional in tone. The instrumental playing is excellent and it is also very sympathetic to the vocal line. The vocal presentation from all concerned is also excellent, is particularly well recorded and has great presence throughout. The presentation is both earnest and assertive but not overpoweringly so; it is well driven but well controlled. The recording quality is also excellent; the clarity is very revealing. This recording has great presence throughout.

Thanks! Oh yes, it is in another page of the thread.

No problem. I happened to be following the conversation as I am a big fan of von Karajan in Strauss.

Beethoven

Listening and looking at this piano concerto by Beethoven with Gulda on the grand piano, you will be reacquainted with the intrinsic power of this work.
A great performance that radiates the joy of making music.

I realy should investigate this recording.  :)
The involvement of Vox Luminis under Meunier makes it almost self-recommending.

I did know this, but the aspiring optometrist in me wants to know why.

Now playing:

Alfred Schnittke: Concerto for Piano & Strings. Roland Pöntinen, Lev Markiz, New Stockholm Chamber Orchestra

Sounds good.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concerto No.6 in B-flat major, K 238. Camerata Academica des Salzburger Mozarteums

An early concerto, but so good.

Saint-Saens: Caprice sur des airs danois et russes [Nash Ensemble]

I really like this remarkable work; it is very capricious indeed. The scoring for the wind instruments is wonderful and all of these musicians carry everything off very well indeed. There is also a wonderful atmosphere of frivolity and levity in this presentation. This is equally balanced by the more solid and serious elements in the work. This is a wonderfully interesting work.

I regret coming to the end of this album. It was really very good.
