And the plan for the rest of the evening is to listen to this whole album properly. Not just the Dvorak...

This landed a couple of weeks ago, but tonight is the first time I can give it the focus of a first listen

Interesting!  :)

I was disappointed.  This is not comparable with his most excellent Vivaldi recordings.

Good to know.  :) It is a (very) crowded field anyway...

I love this stuff by Enrico Gatti and his Ensemble Aurora:

On the left the original issue (vol.1) on Symphonia that I have, on the right the 2CD reissue on Glossa.

Strongly recommended to lovers of Baroque violin music! :)

vers la flamme

Gavriil Popov: Symphony No.1, op.7. Gennady Provatorov, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra

First listen. Sounds killer. Definitely more sprawling and modernistic than the 2nd.

Dry Brett Kavanaugh

Debussy: Iberia. Celibidache/Munchner.

Biffo

Sibelius: Symphony No 2 in D major - Halle Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli

Traverso

Brahms

piano concerto no. 1

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Now I know better why I don't enjoy this work more than I should. It's rather austere, and monothematic. There is no much variety in mood, it's too ecstatic for my taste. Something similar happens with The Bard. It's pleasant enough, but it doesn't enchant me. It's just not memorable.

??? Okay. I find it a masterpiece and so do many others. Your loss I'm afraid.

Super exciting, well-played, the most convinced I have ever been by Glazunov. Like if Svetlanov had a good Western orchestra (not disparaging Russian orchestras, I love that sound, just trying to describe the results). 4 minutes faster than Serebrier and 2 minutes faster than Mravinsky in the Fourth Symphony. The Fifth is 60-90 seconds faster than Serebrier and Jarvi. And live recordings!

Béla Bartók's Viola Concerto
András Kórodi, Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, Géza Németh (viola)

I expect the Violin Concerto will follow!

To the bolded text, which one?

Traverso

Prokofiev

Ivan the Terrible

Philharmonia Orchestra  Ricardo Muti

Good question! Turned out to be Violin Concerto No. 1 on that 1971 recording.

I particularly like this Gergiev recording:

I'm satisfied with this Muti recording and normally I leave the personal life of the musicians out of my  appreciation.
In Gergiev's case it is different.. I find his friendly contact with the criminal president Putin downright reprehensible and I refuse to listen to his recordings.

This is an exception ,there are no other than Gergiev. ::)

Correction,  I puchased the recording he made with Mutter/Gubaidulina,in general no Gergiev for me if I can help it.

If one wants to work in Russia, many things must be done in order to get that work. People suffer for their art every day. Did you stop listening to Strauss because he was appointed Reichsmusikkammer during The Third Reich or remained on friendly and civil terms with Goebbels for example? The problem was Strauss felt the need to continue to work in Germany and that was his decision. On paper, it looks like Strauss was a Nazi sympathizer, but we know this wasn't the case. So I find your reasoning for not listening to Gergiev recordings because he is on friendly terms with Putin to be strangely misguided. An artist has to do whatever they can to get the music performed for an audience.
