Thank you 😁. I have had Paul Creston's symphonies on my radar for a while, but haven't taken the leap. Good to know where to start.

Plus, SY2 by N Jarvi is considered to be a good recording, I guess.

I do recommend him. Exciting, rhythmic, motoric, yet not devoid of depth when needed (e.g. the 3rd Symphony); his works with have personality and a distinctive American voice.

Well-said!

Schumann / Le Sage, volume 2

Funnily enough the repertoire overlaps heavily with volume 1 of Uhlig's series, which I listened to... only yesterday I think.  Opuses 14 and 17 are on both albums.

EDIT: Though it seems Le Sage does the kind of blending of different versions of op.14 that would make Uhlig very unhappy.

SECOND EDIT: Though Le Sage plays the hell out of it.

Indeed. The whole presentation is outstanding. It comes with a slipcase, double jewel case and fantastic book that has some great photos of all the musicians involved with this recording (soloists, conductor et. al.).

Shchedrin: Cello Concerto

Severe describes this work quite well. Earnest, yet gripping as hell.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Cesar, if you haven't heard Respighi's Belfagor, you definitely need to remedy this!

Early morning listening. From my collection, did the A, not into B which is considerable larger.

CPE Bach.
Wind Chamber Music.

Sonatas for Harpsichord and Flute in C major & E major.
Sonata for Oboe in G minor.
Duos for two Clarinets.
Pastorale for Oboe, Bassoon and BC.
Six sonatas for Fortepiano, clarinet and Bassoon.

Fiati con Tasto Köln.

A wonderful mix of CPE Bach chamber music. Well performed and recorded, albeit there is a little sharpness in the wind instruments, due to a close recording, but it does not spoil the pleasure. (1997)

The Telegraph 8/28/99: "Stylish, sensitive portrayals of this pleasant, often fascinating music."
Early Music Review: "Excellent performances."
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

I recall having heard this opera at least once, John. There are many fine moments especially in the opening and closing parts. Other of his operas that have delighted me a lot are Semirama, La Bella Dormente nel Bosco and Lucrezia.

Meyster ob Allen Meystern.
Conrad Paumann and the 15th century German Keyboard School.
Anonymous tablatures from the Buxheimer and Lachamer Manuscripts (1440-1470)

Tasto Solo, Guillermo Perez.

I already wrote what a fine recording this is. The music is ravishing, and involves you deeply in Conrad Paumann's time. A state of the Art sound, made in 2008 completes the picture.  Recommended to lovers of olde musick!

Morning Harry, I have that recording as well - love it.  :)

For my morning listening, I picked something from my list saved on Spotify of recordings of interest:

Well, this mixed programme of Late Medieval music from Germany and Central Europe in the form of an "organ mass" built around the historic organ (1442/1513) in the German village of Rysum, in East Frisia, is a definite winner.
The perfomances by Ghielmi and the Ensemble Biscantores, the instrument and the way it was recorded: perfect!  :)

I've listened to it once once before and liked it but I am more impressed now.. ..

I guess I'll have to find some space on the shelves for this.... 8)

Returning to this for the first time since it was released I have the same impression as before: it is one of those rare discs which somehow capture on record the feeling of a fabulous consort. Whatever reservations one may have about the ensemble, for me they vanish because of this.

Beethoven: 2nd Symphony.

I find old instruments sound of the AAM most attractive.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Not my cup of tea, I'm afraid... But I'm happy with the recording by La Compagnia del Madrigale (Glossa)

What's the problem apart from the spoken word? (which I've edited out - after a lot of trouble!) I just found myself so attracted to it I listened to all 11 madrigals, a whole CD, I rarely have such a long attention span.

I hopelessly failed on keeping up with the flood of German(ic) harpsichord and organ recordings on Brilliant Classics.

But the coming weeks I'll try to correct that and establish if there are any must haves amongst them!

I recently auditioned the Johann Krieger set. This morning Bach pupil Johann Ludwig Krebs:
