These are really very good. Different, but good.

Henry Purcell (arr. Barbirolli)
Suite for Strings Woodwinds & Horns

Sir Edward Elgar

Geo. Butterworth
A Shropshire Lad

Sir Arnold Bax
The Garden of Fand

Sir Edward German
Nell Gwyn

In a box like this, I expect the occasional mixed-bag disc, and this is one. The Purcell arrangements are all right, I just thought of watching old movies on the dinky black-&-white TV of my childhood. The Elgar is tasty. The Butterworth felt like the longest 10 minutes of 2022. Au contraire, I found the Bax charming. The German was simply three slight dances. In all, a net positive.

I had heard both Martinů works previously, but it had been very long. The Novák genuinely qualifies for Maiden-Listen Monday and is a superb piece!

Intriguing, Karl!

Sometimes I'm just not in the mood to listen to a complete Janáček opera and this is where this particular series on Naxos comes in handy. All three volumes are superb.

Born 1860, died 1944. Works composed in 1930s Germany.

Yet another little-known, unsung composer from Germany toiling in the shadow of Strauss, Mahler, Hindemith, Braunfels. We are indebted to labels such as CPO for advocating composers like Woyrsch, Graener, Weingartner, von Hausegger, etc.

These symphonies are well-crafted works, quite bold in thematic and harmonic content yet conservative in language and design. There are subtle influences by Bruckner, too, which shows that AB's language had deeply marked german-austrian music thinking even as his public image was still somewhat simplistic at the time. It would seem Woyrsch was not well regarded by the 3rd Reich authorities and his music fell out of favour in the 1930s. Indeed, while these two symphonies were created in 1930 and 1935 respectively, the scores were not published before 2015.

Woyrsch's symphonies seem a mixed bag to me: the first two symphonies lack more memorability and tend to be discursive to these ears, whereas Nos. 3-5 really show a more personal voice. I'll have to revisit them to refresh my memory then.

This arrived today. I prefer a slightly closer perspective, but it still sounds good, and his playing is excellent. I only listened to it in stereo through my speakers--haven't tried the binaural layer via headphones yet.

In spite of it has its longueurs, I consider it a very enjoyable creation. The first two movements are particularly more memorable than the next ones, methinks.

Felix Friedrichs plays on a Eule Organ 1999.
Pitch:A=439 Hz, by 16 degrees.
Temperament: Andreas Werckmeister, General bass-Unterweisung (1698)

Despite the fact that this organ was build in 1999 it sounds very good. Since the original organ was almost completely destroyed when the church roof came down in 1982, they have tried to bring as much as possible the original barock organ back to life, using a small amount of pipes left over after the catastrophy and rebuilding the complete organ from the technical drawings at that time.
