Szymanowski: Piano Sonata No. 2

More first listens, now playing this striking sonata. I'm liking this.

Nice set!

Dvorak: Four songs, op.2

His first mature revision of songs from Cypresses. Which just happens to include 2 of my own personal favourites out of all of those songs.

I remember reviews of some of Barbirolli's Mahler recordings, where the critic complained that one heard too many of Sir John's sighs, moans, groans, and other noises on the podium.

I hope this set does not involve those!

I hear them but they do not distract in any way or ruin the performance. Hugely enjoyable box set.

Such a wan, wistful photograph looks like a melancholy portrait out of the 1890's!

I was reminded of Mme. Vigée Lebrun

Mahler: Symphony No. 8 (Osmo Vänskä / Minnesota Orchestra, live recording from June 2022) - The performance will be released on BIS, part of the orchestra's ongoing Mahler cycle. In the meantime, Minnesota Public Radio has posted this excellent video.

A new arrival.

The recordings made in Paris (conducted or under the supervision of Fernand Oubradous) of all works that Mozart composed in the French capital.

CD 1: the fragmentary —an allegro movement that just stops suddenly at 3'50"— Concerto for Violin and Keyboard, K325f, the Sonatas for Violin and Keyboard K6 through K9, the Kyrie for vocal quartet and strings, K33, and the Sinfonia concertante for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and orchestra, K297b (of disputed attribution).

Delightful performances that show their age...Most enjoyable!  :)

I purchased this CD(s) some time ago cheaply. A mixed bag in every sense with a list or artists who's rarity of recordings make purchase a chance not to be missed. I will follow your comments on the remaining works with interest.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Linz

Günter Wand with Margaret Maarshall and Mozart Litaniae de venerabili altaris sacramento, K243, Misera, dove son? - Ah! non son' io che parlo! K369, Bella mia fiamma - Resta, oh cara, K528, Overtures,  Così fan tutte, K588, Die Zauberflöte, K620 and Le nozze di Figaro, K492

Telemann, GP - will be finishing up my 'selective' listening my my GPT collection today - i.e. the top row (believe I've had those Pinnock CDs since their first release) and the Paris Quartets w/ Jed Wentz and gang - listen to the Kuijkens earlier in the year.  Dave :)

Any composer influenced by Mahler is fine with me! ;D

Are you talking about Bernstein's first (Sony) or second (DG) Mahler cycle? I've only listened to the second recording, and it's been a while.
Yes, sorry, I was talking about the DG recording, I've only  listened to that too; but anyway any Mahler Bernstein recorded is gold.  ;)
