One of my absolute favorite Boulez recordings. (Just a like doesn't seem adequate in this instance).

Disc one

Found this 3cd bargain box going super cheap at the secondhand store yesterday

Well, JS Bach's Missae Breves are not in my collection, but Spotify had the Pygmalion recording and listening to the first half (3 discs), I was impressed - SO, started to look for reviews - this was well received by an Amazon reviewer who preferred Koopman (middle pic above) slightly, as did Jerry Dubins (see attachment); however, the Cantus Collin recording received a 10/10 on ClassicsToday.  None of these are easy to obtain as physical media and the prices can be markedly inflated, particularly on Amazon USA - would appreciate comments from others familiar w/ these various recordings.  Dave :)

Starting in with 12/1.  This marks the first time where I have heard Thibaudet relegated to second fiddle some of the time.  (I have not listened to his song recital discs, and I must assume the same occurs with those recordings.)  Entirely unsurprisingly, the playing is top shelf.  It is also quite stylish.  Calling it elegant, at least in places, would not be inaccurate.  It is not the most intense, the quickest, the slowest, the most dynamically contrasted, etc.  It is neither the most nor the least anything.  It is rather enjoyable, though.  I suspect I will like the rest of the cycle.

Sonics are odd.  They are excellent, but not only does Thibaudet play second fiddle, his piano sounds smaller in scale than it should, a bit recessed, and the entire recording sounds a bit darker than modern recordings often do.

The Missa Braves are also sometimes referred to as "Lutheran Masses" and I have recordings by the Purcell Quartet (+ vocalists) and Hickox on Decca.

Inclusion of the Requiem in a series christened The Secret Fauré looks like a sarcasm, though.

Yep, kind of surprising. I did enjoy the first volume of that series, which has some interesting, lesser known works. Good evening, Karl!

I'm puzzled as well.

That being said, I have all three volumes and they are uniformly excellent.

Good evening, good sirs!

Post below left earlier by me - new to these JS Bach 'Lutheran Masses' (BWV 233–236) - decided that I liked the reviews of the Cantus Cölln 2-disc set that includes only the 4 masses, and found a good price on eBay, i.e. $16 USD w/ free shipping. Dave :)

It was your recommendation that led me to it, and I recall that you thought highly of the Chandos recording, which is excellent.
