Quote from: LKB on December 22, 2022, 07:10:02 AMHey Karl,

There's a low-res version of the entire program uploaded to YouTube, l think it was 360p. Not very pretty, but l assume that's to satisfy copyright issues. Still watchable, or it was for me.
Thanks, I've found a DVD to order.

Quote from: vandermolen on December 22, 2022, 04:18:16 AMThe George C Scott version is my favourite as well. I remember taking my wife to see it, with a group of friends, when we were first going out together (c.1985/6). It was good to see the late David Warner in a nice role (Bob Catchit, the devoted father to Tiny Tim) for once. The three spirits were very good as well I recall.
I watched it for only the second time tonight ... the first was shortly after the present year was new. I remember liking it very well in January, and it only waxes better. And yes, my thought too was how nice that David Warner wasn't playing a "heavy."

Quote from: SonicMan46 on December 21, 2022, 12:53:24 PMHi Karl - love the first Die Hard in particular so have no strong feelings - some of the 'best' that I googled were strange lists - one included only animated films - another favorite that I had on VHS tape and never upgraded is Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, a 1977 TV film by Jim Henson - free on Amazon Prime Video, and saw a few years ago.  Dave :)

P.S Happy Holiday Season to you and family!

I don't recall ever seeing that one before?  And I'm a big fan of the muppets (more so when I was younger, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for them).  :)

Quote from: relm1 on December 21, 2022, 05:05:09 PMThat was such a sweet tv show.  I remember watching it with my sister as a kid.  She was so inspired by that show that she named her cat emmit.  It was a sweet film.

Sweet!

Another fan here of the Die Hard movies too.

This past week l discovered ( via reaction videos ) Birdemic...
:o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o

For those who've yet to view Birdemic, let's just say it compares with the Sharknado franchise in the same way that liposuction compares with a fine dinner someone else paid for at a renowned Michelin- rated restaurant.

Do not try Birdemic without strong drink, or paramedics on standby.

Two rather contrasting films on TV. Conan has a fantastic soundtrack by Basil Poledouris:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Roasted Swan

on UK's Film4 last night;

Not exactly an original idea (think 6 Million Dollar Man meets Psycho) but a rather compelling mixture of distopian future/black humour/gore and grimmness.  Not exactly a Christmas family movie though.....!!

I have this sitting queued to watch. It's been sitting there for a year or two, because I know I will need to be in a very SPECIFIC mood.

Polar opposites -  ;D  Susan & I love Miracle on 34th Street but this year decided to give the film a break -  :)

Last few nights, we watched the films below:

A Christmas Carol w/ Patrick Stewart (1999) (Amazon rental) - already discussed but have not seen since release (maybe never for my wife?) - we both enjoyed and a wonderful contrast to the George C. Scott TV production.

Christmas in Connecticut (1945) - own as a HD Amazon streamer - short synopsis below w/ main cast - a wacky story and a fun watch - also has one of my favorite character actors of the era, S.Z. Sakall, a.k.a. 'Cuddles' -  :)   Dave

QuoteChristmas in Connecticut is an American Christmas romantic comedy film about an unmarried city magazine writer who pretends to be a farm wife and mother and then falls in love with a returning war hero. The film was directed by Peter Godfrey and stars Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan and Sydney Greenstreet. (Source)

Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers - any fans!  :D

Fred and Ginger made 10 films together (9 between 1933-39, and their last after a 10 year delay and the only one in color - list below) - I own Top Hat and Swing Time which are their top-rated films by IMDB HERE (see pic below, ranking is out of 10); also have the Barkley's.

So, yesterday thought I'd buy a few more as HD streamers on Amazon and picked the next highest rankings, i.e. Shall We Dance and the Gay Divorcee - both excellent - if never seen watch the two on roller skates in the YouTube video.  Now own half their movies and will stop!  8)

QuoteFlying Down to Rio (1933) - Dolores del Río, Gene Raymond, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers
The Gay Divorcee (1934) - Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers
Roberta (1935) - Irene Dunne, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Randolph Scott
Top Hat (1935) - Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers
Swing Time (1936) - Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Victor Moore
Follow the Fleet (1936) - Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Randolph Scott
Shall We Dance (1937) - Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Edward Everett Horton
Carefree (1938) - Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Ralph Bellamy
The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle (1939)- Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Edna May Oliver
The Barkleys of Broadway (1949) - Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers

And in interesting christmas tv programming: late 24th night rolling in to 25th morning I also watched Promising Young Woman, with Carey Mulligan doling out vengeance for the gang rape of her best friend and to date rapists generally.

Yesterday: Branagh's Henry V. This has lost none of its power through familiarity.  You know, I really think that Patrick Doyle is an underrated composer ... I'm still hearing his closing hymn in my inner ear.
Tonight, for starters: The Bishop's Wife. On the sentimental side, yes, yet somehow I still love it.

It's official, this is now the #1 Christmas film.

I don't know how Michael Shannon didn't get an Oscar for this.

Well yeah, I do know. There may have been a covert reference to illegal substances somewhere in the film that I completely missed, or so I've been told.

The Last Detail (1973) - another old DVD-R upgrade to HD Amazon streamer - short summary below w/ cast. Nicholson was nominated for Best Actor by four groups: Academy Awards, British Film Awards, Golden Globes, & Cannes Film Festival, winning at the British FA & Cannes FF. Ratings: 89%, Rotten Tomatoes; 7.5/10, IMDB; 4.6/5, Amazon - I would do 4* on Amazon & 8/10 on IMDB - fun film esp. for the guys, wife less favorable - highly recommended for the performances of Jack and Randy.  Dave :)

QuoteThe Last Detail is an American comedy-drama film directed by Hal Ashby, from a screenplay by Robert Towne, based on the 1970 novel of the same name by Darryl Ponicsan. The film stars Jack Nicholson, Otis Young, Randy Quaid, Clifton James, and Carol Kane.
