Quote from: Harry on February 08, 2023, 12:24:57 AMI saw on JPC de all the recordings of this ensemble for a very low price, so if you like them I would suggest a visit. I am not greatly exited by what these English ensembles, choirs are doing.

I generally share your reservations, but for me it really depends on the ensemble and the repertoire (preferably their home turf). This recording I would recommend.

Many people here loathe this recording but I am enjoying it.

The Couplets de Folie (Les Folies d'Espagne) are superb.

JS Bach: Motets BWV 225/229/227 [Willcocks]

Recorded in 1968 the choir is heavily biassed in favour of the soprano line and, therefore, not well balanced overall. This, for me, detracts from the overall performance.

Concertino de printemps op. 135

A beguiling little gem.

Listened to all three discs. And its pretty good!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

This whole disc is itself a gem. Why Milhaud's violin concertos, especially the 2nd, are virtually unknown is a mystery to me.

Marais deserves to be heard, so whatever suits you!  :)

I do notice that Baroque and even Renaissance music by mainstream performers on "modern" instruments is a trend. Particularly on the piano.

Listening to this disc will complete my traversal of the Almeida/Malpiero Symphony series.

Over the last few days I have listened to the Sinfonie del silenzio e della morte. The work seems more like a suite of symphonic poems than a symphony. The first movement is prefaced with a quote from Poe's Masque of Red Death, a macabre tale in which plague invades a ball personified as a mysterious person. The other two movements are also similarly death themed. This is early Malipiero and the music is eclectic, seeming to blend romantic, impressionistic, neoclassical and neobaroque elements. Not as thorny as mature Malipiero. I liked it a lot.

A most welcome trend, if you ask me. :D

JS & CPE Bach: Harpsichord Concertos [Leonhardt]

JS Bach: Concerto for harpsichord & Orchestra BWV 1052
Leonhardt's relatively gentle and relaxed tempo and treatment of this work allows for the music to breathe so that it can be appreciated all the more.

CPE Bach: Concerto for Harpsichord, Two Violins, Viola & Bass BWV Wq 23
Leonhardt takes a much more brisk approach to the tempo marked Allegro in this work. This presentation has great drive and energy to it. I particularly like this performance.

The Nonetto in D major, Op. 107 is a sheer delight from start to end. No wonder that none other than Berlioz praised it highly.
