Quote from: SonicMan46 on June 30, 2023, 08:12:24 AMJust saw that Karl - looking on IMDB HERE, Arkin made 110 movies!  Quickly looking down the list, I've seen only 16 and own just 2 (The In-Laws & Little Miss Sunshine) of his films - but what are the best from that long list?  Looking at the GoldDerby website, their top 15 are listed below - now 10 of the 16 or so that I've seen are in that rating, including the two that I own - BUT, would be curious about favorites and 'must sees' from other Arkin fans?  Dave :)

Wait Until Dark is definitely worth a watch (Arkin wasn't super happy about playing a heavy. Grosse Pointe Blank is great fun! One which I'm not surprised is omitted from a list of his 15 best is an early quirky one, Little Murders (Arkin directs and plays a police inspector) with Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland. An edgy comedy of which I'm quite fond.

Well, I've seen Wait Until Dark several times and no need (for me) to watch again; Gross Point Blank is at the bottom of the list don't believe I've seen that one; as to Little Murders, may have seen it a while back so a potential re-watch.  Thanks - Dave :)

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on June 29, 2023, 11:37:53 AMCool!  I'd like to see that one in an actual theatre.

There was a fun mini-interview with Karen Allen on NPR recently.  She was playing the game on NPR show "Not My Job".  She did talk about the snakes in the original Indiana Jones film.  If interested, you can listen to it here:  https://www.npr.org/2023/06/24/1183944808/wait-wait-for-june-24-2023-live-from-tanglewood

PD
QuoteThe movie is projected to earn $65M during its domestic opening weekend, placing it on par with 2018's "Mission: Impossible–Fallout." The Indiana Jones franchise has grossed over $2B at the box office when adjusted for inflation. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival May 18, where Harrison Ford was presented with an honorary Palme d'Or.

Training Day. DW had entirely too much fun playing Alonzo. And did Ethan Hawke have one hell of a first day, or didn't he?

I watched perhaps 25 mins. of Rio Bravo, but I wasn't drawn in. I switched to Blazing Saddles.

FYI - Richard Pryor was a co-writer on Mel Brooks's 'Blazing Saddles' and the plan was that he would also co-star in the film, playing Sheriff Bart alongside frequent co-star Gene Wilder. But rumors about Pryor's drug and alcohol use made the studio reluctant to hire him.

Think PBS and Arthur:

From Wiki:

"Arthur is an animated edutainment television series for children ages 4 to 8,[4] developed by Kathy Waugh for PBS, and produced by WGBH. The show is set in the fictional U.S. city of Elwood City, and revolves around the lives of Arthur Read, an anthropomorphic aardvark,[5] his friends and family, and their daily interactions with each other."

" Arthur, the series' titular character, is an anthropomorphic brown aardvark who lives in the fictional town of Elwood City. He is a third-grade student at Lakewood Elementary School. Arthur's family includes two home-working parents, his father David (a chef) and his mother Jane (an accountant), his two younger sisters, Dora Winifred (D.W.), who is in preschool, and Kate, who is still an infant, and his dog Pal. Arthur also has several friends who come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and he also occasionally meets with members of his extended family."

Sisu, an over-the-top revenge fantasy with evil Nazis in Finland with plenty of cartoonish ultra-violence.

M3GAN is such a fun film - a really dark comedy which makes a serious point IMO about AI. Excellent acting from Alison Williams and her young co-stars.

Rewatched Apocalypto.  It's held up well for what it is, and the prominent use of real physical locations, an ancient language, and a roughly appropriate cast all benefit the film.  This time I recognized faces of actors who ended up with roles in subsequent films and TV shows, eg Mayans MC.  Would that some enterprising and/or really rich content producers put together something similarly structured but more focused on daily life.

Quote from: Brian on June 30, 2023, 06:07:28 AMAlan Arkin has died. What a great legacy of movies.
Sad news indeed! He was wonderful as the foul-mouthed grandfather in 'Little Miss Sunshine' for which he won an Oscar.

Quote from: SonicMan46 on June 27, 2023, 08:31:28 AMAny William Holden (1918-1981) fans?  Last few nights, I've watched the two films below - at the bottom, a list of his 15 Best Movies (link there) - watched the first two also recently; own the top 10 and several more (some not on that list that I enjoy):

Sunset Boulevard (1950) - summary and cast below; 11 Oscar nominations; ratings: 4*/4*, Maltin and 4*/4*, Roger Ebert (his REVIEW) - don't watch often but a MUST if never seen.

The Wild Bunch (1969) - synopsis and cast below; often in the top 10 of 'Best Westerns' - another 4*/4* Ebert REVIEW - highly recommended.  Dave :)

Count me in! I like both of those films.

Excellent soundtrack!
