Symphonic Addict

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL more than ever!

I predict the next release will feature concerti for kazoo and didgeridoo... ;D

I enjoyed the Aho symhphonies a lot - possibly tailing off as we got into double figures - but I must admit I have not stayed on board the "Concerto train"!!

You might enjoy his last symphony (No. 17), an expansive programmatic symphony lasting an hour with lyrical moments but also a cloudburst/storm sequence.  The premiere was available online for some time but can't find it anymore.

Quote from: betterthanfine on July 09, 2023, 02:01:43 AMI heard them play the Joey Roukens piece, and it's really great music!
Quote from: Mandryka on July 09, 2023, 09:10:33 AMThey must be one of the best new quartets around today. They make that Roukens piece sound incandescent.

Sounds like something I'm going to have to check out...
It's all good...

I like Orsino Ensemble, their French disc is very good. But I already have all those works from the Belfiato Quintet, a young ensemble on Supraphon...

Will be streaming it as soon as it's available, though I wish he would complete Années.

Thanks for directing me to the Joey Roukens, hadn't heard of him before. Quite impressed. As soon as I heard the references to the minimalists, and in particular Steve Reich, included in the same album, I thought I wouldn't bother listening. Nevertheless, I didn't stop and was rewarded in full. The imitation of the sound of air defence sirens at the end of the first part is too real for comfort. Overall very cool. In this context the famous work of Steve Reich, familiar since the Kronos' recording, sounds somehow quite archaic.

Coming this fall: the complete recordings of the Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet, on Sony, 12 CDs

So, since when has that ever stopped anyone around here?  ;D

Have been waiting for that one for several years!

Edit: Oh, this also marks the first (?) time I have seen Warner actually say "EMI Recordings" on a cover. Wonder if a recent copyright change took place.
