Quote from: Karl Henning on September 06, 2023, 07:44:34 AMRe-watching I, Claudius.

There were three productions broadcast by PBS which I watched religiously: War and Peace with Anthony Hopkins, The Duchess of Duke St. and I, Claudius.

Some great performances ( pun intended  ;)) in the latter, from Derek Jacobi throughout and from a rather brilliant John Hurt as Caligula.

Anyone unacquainted with the general history of the Roman Empire would be well-served to experience the series.

I thought I was going to casually fold it into my rotation, but I find myself compelled again to watch two episodes at a shot.

I recommend Crime And Punishment (1979) with John Hurt, Sian Phillips, and Timothy West.

One that's off the beaten track is Love For Lydia (1977) (a super young Jeremy Irons).

Then there's Danger UXB (1979) with Anthony Andrews.

Lying face down on the stone floor with arms outstretched?

I don't know The Duchess Of Duke Street, so I'll be following up that recommendation.

When I was a teenager, my mother and I watched Masterpiece Theater almost all the time. So that's how I saw War and Peace and I Claudius. Also The Forsyte Saga (which I recommend if you've never seen it). W&P must have been the first time I saw Hopkins in any role.

Duchess of Duke Street must have been from a later period because I don't think I've ever seen any of it.

It's from 1976. I watched it when it came to PBS in 1979.

That would make sense; I was in college in 1979.

Virgin River - renewed our interest in this series having initially gotten half way through Season 4; so last night almost finished up that season and will start the fifth one which was just released (see below and check link, if interested).  Dave :)

QuoteVirgin River is an American romantic drama streaming television series, produced by Reel World Management, filmed in British Columbia, Canada, and based on the Virgin River novels by Robyn Carr. The first season premiered on Netflix on December 6, 2019.[1] In September 2021, the series was renewed for a fourth and fifth season. The fourth season was released on July 20, 2022. In May 2023, ahead of the fifth season premiere, the series was renewed for a sixth season. (Source)

Blimey, that was a bit intense! The tale of a human mind unravelling and a life following suit, as a pillar-of-the-community type doctor who suddenly suspects her husband of having an affair, tries to steer her life through a situation that spins ever more wildly out of control.
It was so intense and the portrayal so uncomfortable, I'll admit I had to pause the series for a while before picking it up again, as I felt I was almost getting sucked down the vortex just watching it. Suranne Jones in the lead brilliantly dials the emotional volume up to 11, and the drama, revelation and tension are all grippingly driven to their boiling points.
Afterwards I was curious if I was the only one who had found it quite so unsettling and so had a peek at Rotten Tomatoes (which gives it a 91% rating) and was somewhat mollified to find that quite a number of critics had registered similar levels of craziness.
Anyway highly recommended, though I'm not sure I can quite take Series 2 yet.

More travel TV in the form of episode one of Platonic.  I always enjoy watching Rose Byrne, and I can stomach Seth Rogen in small doses every few years, so I had middling expectations for this show.  My expectations were far from met.  I believe this is a comedy, but it is not at all funny.  I'm always down for a vulgar gag, but the feeble one meted out in the first episode whiffs.  The show is terrible.  Apple is 0 for 4 for me so far.

More Kill Tony on youtube. This wildly funny show is addictive.

I'm only mildly disappointed in myself for failing to recognize Jn Rhys-Davies.
