It is sometimes expressive and introspective  -  sometimes rather slow tempos, so you may have to adjust if you've been previously listening to someone else - more soul music than dance music. Lovely touch and tone IMO, and excellent recorded sound. Nice selection and arranged to bring out contrasts so it's good to  listen to the whole thing,

Hopefully the Hammerklavier will appear on Spotify.

Quote from: Florestan on November 05, 2023, 10:08:09 AMIn another thread I sarcastically alluded to a fictitious transcription of Johannes-Passion for solo violin. Little did I suspect that I wasn't actually far off the reality mark: Mozart's Requiem has been transcribed for solo piano! Human vainglory has indeed no limits. ( @Madiel;D

Actually a transcription of Mozart's Requiem for solo piano sounds attractive to me, and I'd likely give it a try. It can be illuminating to hear the harmonies and counterpoint of a piece divorced from the orchestration. I rather like the transcription for string quartet.

It's not divorcing it from orchestration that bothers me that much, but divorcing it from the vocal parts. A Requiem without words is not a Requiem anymore.

You say that as if it's a bad thing.

I also like the Piano four-hands version of Brahms' Requiem.

In my book it most certainly is. There is a reason why a Requiem has sung texts. Take them out and there's no Requiem left at all. One might as well transcribe Pergolesi's Stabat Mater for piano.

Take the words out and there is inspired music. The only parts of the Mozart requiem I fully enjoy are the Requiem aeternam and the Kyrie (one of the most brilliant pieces of contrapuntal writing Mozart produced) and I can easily imaging enjoying a piano version of these.

As far as Pergolesi's Start Mater, I'd probably defer listen to a piano transcription until I'd heard the original...

Quote from: Spotted Horses on November 09, 2023, 10:33:05 AMTake the words out and there is inspired music.

By taking out the words of a Requiem or of a Stabat Mater (or of any other religious composition, for that matter) you take out both the very reason why the music exists in the first place and its only purpose. What you are left with is not inspired music but mutilated music, deprived of its very reason and purpose.

Obviously our views on the matter are radically divergent. Let's just agree to disagree and move on.  :)

Quote from: Steinway D on November 05, 2023, 07:03:27 AMThis looks interesting, though I wish he had recorded it on a modern grand. I'll try to keep an open mind.  :)

I see the image is hosted by Amazon, but I can find no reference to the CD for purchase, download or streaming, so far. Not yet released?

Quote from: Que on November 10, 2023, 12:39:44 AMAn issue to keep an eye on!  :)

It is unique, I've never heard Josquin or indeed anything else like it. And I like it I think, at least in small doses in the smaller scale pieces  - because the freshness of it makes an impact - not least because of the excellent sopranos.

The phrasing, sonority, the balance, the vigour - everything is new.

That's Melnikov's second time recording that pairing since he also did it with the Jerusalem Quartet (a really excellent CD).

And yeah...Lang Lang and Saint-Saens don't match.
